Good luck to our littles and middles and Hanna. You Wahine’s got this, and don’t forget high hands today Baylor’s got some size lol.

  2. H-Man September 22, 2019 8:45 am

Good morning all. 20 minutes before start of match. Got my ESPN Plus. My daughter set it up for me. Just waiting to see how the Wahine can match up to what might be next week’s No. 1. Go Wahine !!!

  3. Astroboy September 22, 2019 9:01 am

Aargh – did not realize ESPN+ and ESPN3 are separate! I get the latter with Spectrum. Hope they don’t use + for away games this year.

  4. Cindy Luis September 22, 2019 9:05 am

    Big 12 uses ESPN Plus

  5. Astroboy September 22, 2019 9:06 am

Anyone have the correct livestats link? The one on the bows schedule is the wrong game.

  6. warriorwahine September 22, 2019 9:14 am

lets go bows! put in some more aggression!

  7. Astroboy September 22, 2019 9:21 am

Ok, someone fixed the livestats link.

  8. H-Man September 22, 2019 9:30 am

Wahine lost first set, but they played well. Baylor doesn’t make many mistakes and their hitters have quick arms to go along with their setter who is placing the sets perfectly. Stafford killed us.

  9. ballerz September 22, 2019 9:35 am

lets go bows you got this!

  10. ballerz September 22, 2019 9:38 am

    4 hits missed

  11. Maverick September 22, 2019 9:41 am

Pressley reminds me a little of Willoughby. Highly athletic with a really live arm. Great vertical.

  12. Maverick September 22, 2019 9:48 am

Pitt loses in 5 to Penn State. 16-14 in the fifth.

  13. Maverick September 22, 2019 9:52 am

After the Baylor-UH match, there will be two unbeatens left, Cal being the other.

  14. Cindy Luis September 22, 2019 9:57 am

    .13. yep

  15. greenthumb September 22, 2019 10:02 am

Listening on radio. Are our missed serves nerves? Or…?

  16. PBnJz September 22, 2019 10:03 am

Ugh! We just gave em that set with those two service errors! Go Bows! Only you can beat you!

  17. HawaiiMongoose September 22, 2019 10:03 am

Ouch. We gave that set away. Three service errors and an overpass on a free ball down the stretch. SMH.

  18. Beauston September 22, 2019 10:03 am

I don’t understand why Sibley haven’t played. Being undersized cost Hawaii to loose 2nd set.

  19. Andrew September 22, 2019 10:03 am

Makes you wonder what a difference having Rasmussen would have made in this match. they played Baylor tough in that second set before the collapse though

  20. Beauston September 22, 2019 10:05 am

That whole travel delay fiasco is also evident on the freshmen. They all look spent.

  21. Maverick September 22, 2019 10:07 am

    18. The passing fell off toward the end. Sibley wouldn’t have made a difference. Plus Baylor hustled for a lot of digs that would have been kills against lesser teams.

  22. Beauston September 22, 2019 10:17 am

    21. I think you forgot about the blocks.

  23. Cindy Luis September 22, 2019 10:19 am

    5. hope you figured out the link. the one i listed was correct. UH had the wrong won

  24. Maverick September 22, 2019 10:27 am

    22. In Set 2, UH had its biggest lead at 17-10 before Baylor caught up. Before that point, UH was blocked twice. After, three times. Hardly an argument for blocking being the main issue.

  25. Maverick September 22, 2019 10:30 am

    22. You got your wish. Sibley is playing.

  26. jmy September 22, 2019 10:36 am

Would have been nice to pull the upset, but in the end, I don’t think that this loss will hurt UH at all…I just hope that there’s no let down against Beach & CSUN…those matches are way more important…

  27. Hau’oliz1 September 22, 2019 10:37 am

I’m trying to find the value behind Wagoner as a starter??? Her body language in the third set was telling, gave away a few crucial point down the stretch due to errors…is t Sibley or SOMEBODY ELSE a better start? Please help me understand?

  28. ballerz September 22, 2019 10:39 am

we got a nice win over mizzu yesterday and can use that as momentum into the regular season. lets go bows!

  29. H-Man September 22, 2019 10:39 am

Good match. Wahine played good. A little better passing and connection between setter and hitter would have made a difference. Baylor’s setter, No. 14, had them hitting on all cylinders.

  30. Andrew September 22, 2019 10:43 am

Going into the road trip, I thought they needed to at least get a split to be successful and they did just that. Other than that first set, they played Baylor pretty well. They jus shot themselves in the foot in that second set which they should have won. This bodes well for the rest of the season and post season which hopefully they’ll have their full team at full strength.

  31. islandman September 22, 2019 10:44 am

    27. She had the 2nd most blocks , 4 and tied for the most digs, 10, plus had some nice kills earlier.

  32. HawaiiMongoose September 22, 2019 10:47 am

Gotta wonder how UH having a healthy Jolie Rasmussen in the lineup would have changed the outcome. The Wahine went toe-to-toe with Baylor for most of the match. With a little more firepower on the floor they might have prevailed.

  33. Maverick September 22, 2019 10:51 am

27, 31. Plus Riley is one of the best passers on the team and is a better hitter than Sibley. If anyone else was better than Riley, then she would be sitting.

As for the loss, no biggie. Baylor should be #1 tomorrow if there is any justice in the world. And Andrew is right, UH played well in sets 2 & 3. Hellvig is a baller, played really great. Inexperience, being down Rasmussen, and fatigue played a role in fading down the stretch. But give Baylor all the credit. They have more live arms and hustled for the ball more than UH.

Now refocus on winning the BW. That is paramount.

  34. islandman September 22, 2019 10:54 am

Saw Akana and Krug on the sidelines, so Gong and Jolie stayed home , i think. 12 players got in the game today.

  35. tongo September 22, 2019 10:58 am

Agree with H-man. The wahines played solid and as a unit. With a split this weekend, they did themselves proud. If JM was playing, the match would likely have been highly contested. Going 10-1 into conference play is something not many of us would have been thought possible at the start of the season. The wahines should be very proud heading into conference. The freshmen were great.

  36. Cindy Luis September 22, 2019 10:59 am

    All-tournament team
Pressley, Baylor, best scorer & MVP
    DeBerg, Missouri, best attacker
    Stafford, Baylor, best blocker
    Lockin, Baylor, best setter
    Van Sickle, Hawaii, best defender

  37. jmy September 22, 2019 10:59 am

    33. I agree that Baylor should be #1, but there’s very little justice in the NCAA…I have a sneaking suspicion that Nebraska will hold on to the top spot…

  38. islandman September 22, 2019 11:01 am

    33. Also, Baylor dug a lot of balls and it’s the first time UH was out blocked this season.

  39. WaveRipper September 22, 2019 11:44 am

Know there’s going to be a lot of “could have, would have, should have” regarding the sweep and the absence of Jolie.

But the way Baylor was playing, you can see why the Bears have climbed from #20 in the Preseason Top 25 to possibly one of the top 4 spots in the upcoming Top 25 poll. I can hear them now: “Come at us, Longhorns!”

Expect BYU to make the biggest jump. Pittsburgh has my total respect.

Hawaii did better than anyone expected in the preseason. While playing Baylor, they were 1 of 3 NCAA D1 undefeated teams left in the nation. Now only Baylor and California — California was chosen to finish 8th in the Pac-12 preseason poll — have a chance at perfection. (Note: Last school to pull that W perfection trick was the 2009 Penn State team.)

Now comes the Big West conference season. Picked to 3-peat in 2019, Cal Poly (7-5) dropped out of the Top 25 but should have a decent RPI considering they beat 2 Pac-12 teams (Utah and Oregon St) and played 4 Top 25 ranked teams.

Can hear Na Wahine saying, “Come at us, Mustangs, come at us!”

    Go Bows!

  40. jmy September 22, 2019 12:03 pm

    39. Cal will be tested this Thursday when they play Stanford…

  41. PBnJz September 22, 2019 12:08 pm

#27…Riley is very reliable in so many aspects of the game! She’s not killing it in just one area, but she’s there when we need her in so many areas! I think she’s so reliable, you never quite notice her…except when there’s a mistake! And she’s still just a freshman, so there will be a few of those! (Hint…you might want to try noticing who it is that picks up so many of our hits that get blocked back…seems to me like it’s usually Riley!)
As for Sibley, I would have loved it if she would have finally come into her own as a Sr. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t seem meant to be. I appreciate her sticking with the program despite not having the success she probably hoped for.

  42. blunite September 22, 2019 12:11 pm

    Passing!

    – The players with the highest kill percentages (MBs) were set only 20 times? (Poor passing prevented more sets to the Middles.)

    – The players with the lower kill percentages were given most of the sets (OHs).

    – Over 50 sets were high and wide to the outside. Slow, predictable, low percentage offense. Allows double block to set up every time.

  43. Bleachercoach September 22, 2019 2:40 pm

Your doing super well Rainbows!! Keep it up! Not too many 10-1 Teams in the Country!

  44. nomu1001 September 22, 2019 2:47 pm

I’d take this team over Baylor’s team any time, any day. Proud of this team. Keep improving every week.

  45. H-Mam September 22, 2019 3:04 pm

In a previous blog, it was mentioned the team to watch in the Big West is UCSB. I believe they have only one loss. They’re probably a better team than Cal Poly right now. Anyway…….Wahine doing way better than I had hoped and it’s one game at a time. It’s so much fun!!! Go Wahine !!!

  46. Sheila September 22, 2019 3:12 pm

Kudos to JR-less-Wahine! Played very well in this tough road trip and was very competitive against #5 team, Baylor. Need to improve digging those bullet kills without sending to benches (with soft hands with quick reflexes, similar to tennis players’ drop shot near net). Roofing staff needs to be bit quicker. Baylor’s attack-clinic was a good experience what to expect from a top team in post-season. Hopefully, full squad is used strategically, in regular season, meanwhile, getting heal the injuries, and physically stronger to be injury proof (particularly ankles) and to develop equivalent reserve front row player, in case, to replace an injured player, particularly, when playing against quality top 10 teams.

  47. Maverick September 22, 2019 3:40 pm

I’ve seen a lot of critical comments on another board and here about this team and its players. Some people have really lost perspective.

Before the season started, there was a real possibility for this team to have gone 6-5 with losses to USD, Washington, UCLA, Baylor and Missouri. The team has several new starters including 3 freshmen. Our best player has missed the last 4 and 2/3 matches.

Last year, the team was 2-3 in five set matches. This year, 3-0. Before this season, it had been a long time since UH’s last victory over a top 25 team. This team has three already this year. This team has a rare pre-conference road win against a top 25 team, something last accomplished in 2013. This team’s current adjust RPI is the third highest in the country, after Baylor and Colorado State (and that includes today’s loss to Baylor). Don’t remember the last time when UH’s RPI was this high at this point in the season. This team has the 6th-best strength of schedule (and there was some chirping about the schedule being so so).

This team is 10-1. No one predicted any of the above unless she/he was sarcastic or joking.

    Just some perspective for everyone.

  48. RainbowWahineFan15 September 22, 2019 4:39 pm

I think this lost will serve Hawaii well. I think right now, Baylor is the top team in the country. Their hitters are amazing! For our ladies to play up and up with them for most of this match, is a tell tale sign of how great these Wahine are going to be this season. Minus the little miscues here and there, our Wahines probably had the best chance of knocking off Baylor than any other team the Bears have played so far this year. On top of that, they do it without the services of Jolie Rasmussen and that says a lot. That would have been like Baylor having to play with Yossiana Presley. I’m very excited to see this team grow from this experience and use this set back as motivation. I believe this team, when it peaks at it’s highest and is 100% healthy, will be contenders for a national championship. I believe in this team! Go Bows!

  49. RainbowWahineFan15 September 22, 2019 4:41 pm

    *with out

  50. RainbowWahineFan15 September 22, 2019 5:03 pm

Hey Maverick, where can I find the RPI and strength of schedules for Hawaii and the rest of the NCAA volleyball programs across the country?

  51. vballfan September 22, 2019 5:05 pm

    47. and 48. Mahalo.
    This team is wonderful, exciting.

  52. Betsy September 22, 2019 5:08 pm

When I first saw the pre-season schedule, I thought WHY????? Never did I think the results would be so GOOD. I am proud of the team and excited about our season…yes, our season did not really begin yet. This year…our question will not be IF we get into playoffs but where we will go. If the NCAA took note of the mens BWC tournament, we bring the crowds, enthusiasm and money. The winning teams deserve to play in our arena.

  53. Maverick September 22, 2019 5:19 pm

    50. The following site is the best RPI estimator (non-NCAA official) and is updated several times per week, and more often on the weekends (also good discussion of how to calculate, and other data): http://ncaastats.figstats.net/volleyball-rpi.cgi

This is the official NCAA RPI archive site, which has not yet released official RPI stats for 2019 women’s volleyball: https://extra.ncaa.org/solutions/rpi/SitePages/Home.aspx
The official site updates once a week once they start releasing, which should be next week (last year, the NCAA released the RPIs after the first week of conference play).

  54. Kazu September 22, 2019 6:00 pm

I think if Jolie was there Baylor wouldn’t have swept. I think she would have made a difference with her scoring and blocking. Have to focus on the the matches from here on out starting with LBS.
Wahine still needs to work on the errors though.

  55. tongo September 22, 2019 6:01 pm

Agree with #51 – this is a wonderful team. Coaches have created a scheme which integrates seasoned veterans and freshmen to maximize each of their individual efficiency. With a 10 -1 record (91% win efficiency), what more can you possibly ask for when you are starting 3 true freshmen. Congrats to the players, coaches and staff for the best start in over a decade! You have exceeded all our expectations and we are so proud of you.

  56. H-Man September 22, 2019 7:25 pm

Maverick, I feel your comment, #47, is out of line. The bloggers on this blog have not been negative about the team or players. By and large I find the comments interesting.

  57. RainbowWahineFan15 September 22, 2019 8:13 pm

Thank you Maverick, appreciate it! It’s nice to know these kind of details come tournament time.

  58. Maverick September 22, 2019 8:24 pm

    56. Re-read my comment. It was inclusive of comments on another blog. Also read comment #27 above, as one example. And I said “some”, not “all” or “most” people have lost perspective. Please read my comment, not what you want to read into my comment. Thank you.

  59. Maverick September 22, 2019 8:24 pm

    57. No problem. You’re welcome.

  60. Cindy Luis September 22, 2019 9:28 pm

    37. It’s not an NCAA poll. It’s the AVCA Coaches poll. but there’s obvious bias there
    59. thanks for all the help. I was at AVP after doing the Wahine rewrite.
Hadn’t notices much negativity here. Can’t say the same on other sites, which I try to avoid unless someone points something out that I have the answer. I.E. the Gage Worsley absence.
Spoke to Rasmussen at the AVP today. She seems to be healing well.

  61. darkfire35 September 22, 2019 9:33 pm

    47. Bravo Maverick! Bravo! At the beginning of the season, I was cautiously optimistic because of the untested in bound talent. I almost felt the same way when we got the one and done seniors last year. I thought we were going to get a good infusion of talent, however, not quite to expectations. Not from lack of effort mind you.
This year is scarier…in a good way. These are freshmen and transfer juniors that are genuinely working hard to gel together and are already pretty good at it. And we haven’t even started the conference yet. You can even see it in their eyes; they are hungry. As Brooke said in an interview, she believes they are good enough to host. It starts with that kind of confidence, that belief that they will succeed. You can’t teach/coach that.
Can’t wait to see you all back home and Jolie back to being healthy!!
    GO BOWS!!

  62. darkfire35 September 22, 2019 9:34 pm

    60. Mahalo nui loa for the update Cindy! Glad to hear Jolie on her way back from recovery! GO BOWS!

  63. Cindy Luis September 22, 2019 9:36 pm

    50. I like RichKern.com There are some free items as well as comparative RPI by Rich, Pablo, etc.
The first RPI of the season came out last year on Oct. 1 after the first week of conference. Hawaii opened at 100 last year.

  64. WaveRipper September 22, 2019 9:55 pm

    Re: 1st RPI

    1. As far as I know, there is no NCAA date to the start of “conference season,” and thus not all NCAA D1 conferences start the conference/regular season at the same time.

    2. Someone above states that the NCAA’s first RPI release should be next week. As far as I know, the first release is almost always the first Monday in October, which would be October 7 in 2019.

  65. Maverick September 22, 2019 11:01 pm

    64. On point #1, agree, the timing last year was the Monday after the first week of BW conference play (as well as in 2017). In 2014/15/16, two weeks of BW play occurred before the NCAA released the first RPI rankings.

On point #2, the first RPI reports for the past few years were dated and presumably released on 9/30/18 (confirmed), 10/1/17, 10/2/16, 10/5/15, 10/6/14. I speculate this year’s first RPI report to be on 9/30 like last year, rather than 10/7. Not always the first Monday in October, but usually.

  66. WaveRipper September 22, 2019 11:32 pm

#40: Or putting it another way, Stanford could be put to the test this Thursday when they play Cal at good old Haas Pavilion.

The “Perfect 10” team was expected to finish 8th in the Pac-12. Thus, this match should be a cakewalk for the Cardinals.

After all, Stanford is the only school with three 2018 1st Team All-Americans: seniors Kathryn Plummer, Jenna Gray, and Morgan Hentz.

Gray, the two-time defending Pac-12 Setter of the Year, was the only non-senior setter to earn 1st Team All-American honors last year. Hentz is the two-time defending Pac-12 Libero of the Year and last year’s Final Four Co-MVP. And then there’s Plummer, a living legend and the two-time defending National Player of the Year.

Should be a cakewalk. Except thus far the Blue-and-Gold team is not following the preseason script. Except sports doesn’t always go the way “stats” say things should go.

  67. Hot September 23, 2019 3:06 am

Wagoner is the most consistent passer behind Okino, so she needs to be there. Speaking of Okino, I don’t understand why their best passer isn’t on the floor for six rotations. What’s the value of having 6 hitters when you can’t give consistently good sets because of errant passes? The hitting percentages are telling.

  68. WaWa September 23, 2019 5:03 am

Hau’oliz1- could you elaborate on Wagoner’s body language? I was watching, but not paying close attention.

Either way, I am extremely pleased and entertained by this group and especially with this group of freshman. Wagoner may be perceived by some (hopefully a select few) as the weakest of the Wahine that are on the court, but she as a freshman is already better than the senior pin hitters we had last year and the year before. As a longtime UH Wahine fan, I am thankful for the efforts our staff put into recruiting.

What a fabulous start to the season! (sans Rasmussen’s injury of course)

  69. Sheila September 23, 2019 5:29 am

What was the rational behind leaving out Tiffany, (6’3” OH and great blocker) right after JR’s injury? She may not be the same caliber as Amber or Skyler, but definitely, would not had been guarded by solo blocker in last two matches, and allowing multi-defenders to guard star attackers, Hana & Brooke (as shown in first-half of Missouri stat). Wahine was never successful in last few years when local relatively, shorter player stuck in front row (sorry, this is ugly truth). Nevertheless, this will not be an issue for winning Big West, little league title.

  70. RainbowWahineFan15 September 23, 2019 6:25 am

Thank you Cindy! I totally forgot about that one but I will definitely take a look into the richkern.com site.

I think Riley’s all-around game is what give’s her the advantage. RAS did mention something before about Wagoner that for a Freshman her volleyball IQ is out of this world. I also believe that at one point in the pre-season she was considered for the Libero position, which says a lot about her passing, defense, and play-making abilities for the hitters. Add to the fact that Wagoner was also the Ohio Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year, and you can see why she’s a keeper on the court. She may have a few errors here and there, like most players, but for the most part she’s consistent with her level of play. I hope to see her continue to improve and get better as the season goes on, as for the same with the rest of the Rainbow Wahine’s.

  71. Amosilatus September 23, 2019 7:44 am

Wagoner is quiet and dependable. Her all-around skills–especially defensive skills–are awesome, and keeps her on the court.

  72. rabbit ears September 23, 2019 8:44 am

#69 “Wahine was never successful in last few years when local relatively, shorter player stuck in front row (sorry, this is ugly truth). Nevertheless, this will not be an issue for winning Big West, little league title.”

WOW! EXCUSE ALL US SMALL TIME LOCAL FOLKS FOR SUPPORTING OUR TEAM!.

  73. Maverick September 23, 2019 8:46 am

Hawaii is #11 in today’s AVCA poll. As I suspected, Baylor was screwed, voted #2, behind Stanford. Bull.

    https://www.avca.org/polls/di-women/9-23-2019.html

I hope folks give Riley a chance to develop and improve. Her all-around game is great for a freshman. In the past, people have picked on players like Tai Manu-Olevao or McKenna Granato. I would like to see folks not do the same to Riley, who has played all of 11 matches in college. Appreciate =what she does, not what she doesn’t do. She’ll be better as the year and her college career moves along.

    73. Well, you called it yesterday…I had a feeling that Baylor would get shafted, but I don’t understand how Stanford is still #1…Don’t understand why Oregon is still in the top 25 either…

    75. I suspect with a win over former #1 Nebraska, some voters may have considered the loss at home to BYU as a wash. Also easier to go from 2 to 1 versus 5 to 1. Plus continued sloppy AVCA voting. One voter left Baylor completely off her ballot. Dumb.

    64. if you’re referring to my post, and I think Mavericks, both of us mention that the RPI has come out after the first week of the season. And last year Hawaii was 100 after the first week of the Big West
    69. Westerberg has not been used much at OH, she is the backup middle. I was surprised that she replaced Igiede who was 9-0-12 but guess coaching staff saw something with the matchup. UH did flip its lineup in Set 3.
    75. Stanford is not ‘Still” No. 1. The Cardinal at No. 2 last week, Nebraska was No 1
as mentioned, the votes and points fall where they do. Pitt loses to Penn State , the Panhers jumping over the Nittany Lions to No. 4 and Penn State drops a spot to 5.
Rice (11-1) with the win over Texas in the Top 25 for the first time.
