Rasmussen and van sickle in sweats. Bummer.
2. updated that in main box
BTW, Radio will be joined in progress due to MLB running late.
Prayers to van sickle and hoping it’s not serious. Hawaii really just can’t catch a break this year when it comes to injuries
Now depth becoming an issue.
State of minds after last night’s super duper gigantic beatdown by the last place team.
I could feel/see some divide with the team last night, it looked like they were very unsure of themselves. Wasn’t playing high IQ volleyball.
Like to see if Robyn will try using Westerberg on the outside.
Thinking Norene will set/hit. Tiffany comes in for Bailey. Libero comes in For middles.
AHHH I hope we adjust to this new lineup we have. We are having a hard time BUT I will say that they are at least going for all the balls that are on our side of the net, playing defense and scrambling and what not. Did they mention what injury Van Sickle has?
Man, they must not have anyone for the left side with #20 still starting. She was bad last night and so far Fullerton has scored 8 points off of her in the back row and hitting error. Wish there was an alternative. Middles still playing well.
Still feel like we are slow at getting to the ball coming over to our side on defense.
7. as mentioned, Westerberg is OH in place of Van Sickle
Just better volleyball on the other side of the net so far.
Omg what in the world is going on with this team ?!?!?! Ross and Okino are really stinking up the joint!
9. no on Van Sickle injury, just not cleared to play.
Think it was the hamstring that I mentioned last night, only because they redid her KT. (kinesiology tape)
Errors!! Hard to win when you beat yourself and give away a lot of easy points. Four seeving errors by wahine to giftwrap that set to fullerton.
12. Sorry missed that. Tnx
They do look slow.
Can’t win if you can’t put the ball down. And with this lineup the Wahine don’t have the firepower to put the ball down at anything close to rate they did with Jolie and Brooke. It’s frustrating to watch.
It seem that Bailey runs a crisper offense….tonight anyway.
Finally Ross out of back row. hanawahine in. Defense much better. Took long enough.
Ross really can’t be a full time player. She is great as a spark of the bench.
Giving up 8-9 point runs to teams like fullerton and irvine I don’t know this team anymore yikes. There is a dark cloud over them.
They are going after Ross.
They need to put Norene back on the outside until they get Brooke and Jolie back.
Gut-wrenching, Sore stomach. Can’t watch anymore. Going watch Netflix.
Poor passing tele-graphing Hawai’i sets. Setter’s are setting far behind the 3 meter line.
Shades of Brian Gimillaro Hawai’i running two middles (no opposite).
Every phase of the game they are struggling and the service errors in crucial
Moments are killers. I just am perplexed what has happened to this team they should not be this bad without Van Sickle.
OMG WT*
Struggling is not even the word to describe it right now, man I hope we can get it together and play better!
from bad to worst to impossible. what has happened to na wahine? whatever happened to that jack fact ‘difficult to defeat the bows’ and remain unbeaten versus x amount of teams?
has hawai’i volleyball has its days numbered, that they were a rock sturdy team to now a collapse in the big west versus the bottom of the league? and its not just simple jolie and brooke being out.
LETS GO BOWS! its time to block em and serve em. nasty aces included!
Try akana, have Iosia hit and set, something needs to be done. Ross and wagoner just make too many hitting errors. Put in gong over Okino as serving sub.
Bear in mind that McKenna Ross and Rika Okino are not RAM’s recruits. The setters look bad because the poor passes eliminate the threat from the middles.
Another collapse under pressure. I never liked using Norene as a hitter but I think Robyn is going to have to play that card. Something HAS to be done to raise the hitting percentage.
I cannot watch this debacle any longer; wake me up when we start playing wahine volleyball again…
Fullerton looking for a sweep, they not letting anything hit the floor. 0-2 for sure next week end, and maybe 3rd or 4th at the end of conference. Don’t know whats going on,maybe this team is not as close as they make it out to be.
This is so frustrating. Reminds me of when the warriors got swept back to back by northridge a few seasons ago ,but this is far worse because these are very average/bad teams the wahine are losing to.
But the self inflicting errors and other teams getting lucky bounces also, it’s like a nightmare..
Errors , errors and more errors.
That’s it. I am not going to pretend these are good teams. They are not playing like a tournament team.
Thank god for Denise as lower ref.
Please no more Okino serving .
No post season this year as Wahine adjust to new lineups. At least they have a good foundation for next year.
In their darkest hour, true believers never waiver. Sounds nice.
Question is why hasn’t Norene been hitting all season long? Lol
She is clearly a better hitter than either Ross or wagoner at this point in their careers and she is a savvy senior she knows where to hit when the set is off.
Norene. Sometimes that’s all it takes. She needs to be in every rotation.
one down
Like Akana’s mickey mouse ears hair style.
If Wahine + Ah Mow are playing the shell game, I don’t care. Just win it ladies!!! No problem.
Coming all the way back….from the depths of gloom. RAM has finally found the right lineups. Wahine mojo is alive!
I think it be more like Princess Leia from Star Wars 🤗 🤖
Now right here. Ah Mow have all the personnel she need to win EVERY match. And these particular Wahine don’t get tired. Ah Mow needed to have this unit in constantly last night! Div. 1 is not intramural!
Come ON coach. We expect you to make the tough decisions! No worries! Crowd behind you!!!
iosia is a stud
Please Lord Jesus. Two more points.
I think I’ll just watch the 5th game again to see Amber’s expressions!
I don’t understand why okino is the libero rather than hanawahine. Just because she is an upperclassman should make no difference. Okino is the worse libero we have had in years. Can someone explain?
The stress level of the first 3 sets cannot be measured. But I’m actually laughing in the middle of the fifth set watching Amber and Akana celebrate. Go bows!!!!
I know a win is a win, but seriously, we’re celebrating defeating in 5… Fullerton??? Hopefully Jolie and Brooke are back next week to stabilize things.
42. because until Rasmussen and Van Sickle got hurt they didn’t need Iosia to hit.
49. this is not the lineup they need to win. It worked against Fullerton. Westerberg is a middle who moonlighted as an OH for a little bit tonight. Akana is a middle that moved to OH for the first time, and this is only her second match of the season. They had talked about her moving to OH but that was the plan for spring. They may need to make that happen sooner, depending on when Van Sickle and Rasmussen come back.
55. I’m with you. but better than having a loss. Think the celebration is in them being able to pull out the win. Hawaii was down 0-2 and didn’t take its first lead in Set 3 until 22-21.
heres the elephant in the parking lot…who is in charge of getting people out? why is 3/4 of the lot funneled through the waialae gate and last night, there is no one doing traffic control. we’re on the ewa side of the parking lot and once we get finally get down, we’re directed to the waialae gate? whats the point behind this? especially when they just have KIDS standing at the exits and doing absolutely nothing. we were waiting so long once we got the the cooke field exit, i asked the kid standing there if he shouldn’t be doing some sort of traffic control and he says theres nothing to control. OMG to put it nicely. i started to say, stay in school, but obviously this school who hired him is not doing him any justice! he should see my 93 old mother to teach him some common sense! in my day “it” wasn’t called abuse, and we learned…TIMEOUTS don’t work!

Iosia hit .220 last season, that’s a lot better than wagonner and Ross, she needs to hit over them even with a healthy lineup.
If anyone in the band reads here…you guys need to be careful jaywalking across the street in front of your band room while cars are moving. We get that the instruments are heavy but the jaywalking–esp. at night is dangerous..esp. if you are wearing black. UH should paint a crosswalk there for 1) an identified area for crossing and 2) safety. We almost hit the director one night as she ran across.
53. So Okino isn’t the best server, but she’s probably better in passing than the other DS that’s why she’s the Libero. And she has bailed this team out on several occasions this season. I can’t imagine what you’re gonna say if Hanawahine or Gong make mistakes. Soooo dramatic.
35. you said it. wahine volleyball needs to be played again and/or made great again.
43, 50 and 46. norene. put her back as an attacking setter and she had to take command again. smh that and a shell game had to be an absolute necessity.
Norene is the one constant on this team…steady, reliable and big sistah who cajoles, lectures and provide the spark. She carried this team on her back to victory.
Also, big props to our Kiddie Corps. Four Freshwomen (PC) on the court at the same time and actually having fun. So refreshing to watch.
The future of this team is in good hands.
GO BOWS.
59. Sometime last year they stopped using police to do traffic control. I assume they couldn’t afford the overtime. I have to turn right onto Dole coming out and there’s a mess with pedestrians now. I assume the students who stand around propping up the wall aren’t actually allowed to be in the street directing traffic for liability reasons. I don’t actually know what they are there for.
Great to see the players having fun again. But, when the whistle blows, want to see some aggression, fight and gut. Do they even realize what they stand to gain and what they stand to lose?
These freshmen are the core for the future, what this program will build upon. Why play timid? When this team lost, you could not say they played their best and so could hold their heads up high. You could not say it was a tough, hard fought loss.
Akana showed fight. She did not want to lose. Iosia showed leadership. When you are good enough to be ranked, you are competing on a national stage to be the best by playing the best. There is parity no matter what conference you play in. There are a lot of talented players throughout the country.
As has always been said, when you get knocked down, get back on your feet, and fight. Never give up.
It is easy to be an armchair quarterback and comment what should/shouldn’t be done in retrospect. We have to understand that it isn’t easy, particularly with the early success this season, that these Wahine, and the coaches, will not be consistently/constantly successful all season long. This is a young team and human; they will make mistakes and have difficulty recovering from guffaws. Even in professional sports, it may take years for an entire team to gel and we’re expecting the Wahine to do it from weekend to weekend.
So let’s just stay in behind them, let them play/coach and keep chanting “LET’S GO BOWS!!!”
This blog and Irvine utterly failed but CalStatFullerton did the huge favor and now Hawaii coaching staff owes big Mahalo to CalStatFullerton for unearthing golden nugget, Akana, the missing piece of JR-less-wahine, to fill OH/blocker/digger position. IMO, Akana belongs to the same level as high IQ-BVS, should also be in full rotation. The athletic #20 should be limited only to back row duty with back-row attack and please stop torturing wahine fans and making mission of bringing 5th National Title by core pillars of this squad (JR, Hana, BVS, capt. Norene, AKANA, and MB pool) difficult. In fact, already, done huge damage in up-coming RPI.
Just watched the UH vs Fullerton match via delay TV, and believe I heard the broadcaster saying Hawaii’s RPI was “3” prior to the Irvine game and was something “__teen” after the Irvine game.
Very irresponsible for this local broadcaster to give out a RPI number without mentioning that his RPI number is not the official NCAA RPI, since the first RPI of the 2019 season isn’t released until tomorrow. IRRESPONSIBLE.
Of course all eyes will be on tomorrow’s release of the RPI. But I’m watching the AVCA Coaches’ Poll — what the AVCA gives, the AVCA takes away — and current-eleventh Hawaii will be taken to the woodshed. At least two of the Top 25’s bottom three — Florida State (9-4) lost and Washington State (13-3) split and Oregon (5-8) lost twice — should drop into the “also receiving votes” category.
Can UCSB enter the Top 25 this week? NO. In front of USCB are: Louisville Cardinals (11-3) with a couple of wins since the last poll, climbing San Diego Toreros (12-4) with 3 victories, Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (17-1) of C-USA with yet another W, Michigan Wolverines (11-3) with a pair of Ws, and Southern California (8-6) which almost pulled off a reverse sweep at Galen Center before falling to Washington St.
Speaking of reverse sweeps, if you are new to volleyball, the one thing I would advise you to do when taking in a match is to look for the slight shifts in MOMENTUM. Volleyball is a game of MO, and if you are aware of them — and many times even coaches are blindsided by these shifts until it is too late to stop them — you will see the match in an entirely different light.
Go Bows!

new thread up for Sunday scores
68. not sure what you mean by the blog utterly failed? over what?
What happened Saturday night was basically desperation. And what they put together worked.
they recognized that the right side block wasn’t there. They put Akana over there for the blocking. She had never played there and i thought she did a remarkable job. She said after the match that she got a lot of help from her front row players. As I mentioned before, they are looking to convert her from MB to OH, thought it would be in spring when they had more time but they may need to do that this week depending on the other injuries.
What people seem to overlook is that this team lost its top hitter in Rasmussen, and best defensive player in Van Sickle. That is a huge percentage of the passing and kills
And overlooked is that Hawaii is young at a lot of spots. Hellvig is 18 and being asked to carry a heavy load. She had over 20 swings by the middle of Set 2 against Fullerton. A night after a five-setter with UCI.
Wagoner is being asked to do a lot as well.
They are freshmen Let them grow.
When you think about it, if you didn’t get the oregon transfers what you are seeing is what Hawaii would have looked like this season. Good but young.
Ross (No. 20 as someone says) may not be the answer but at the moment she is because they don’t have anyone else with her experience.
As for the RPI thing, yes, whoever said it should have prefaced it with unofficial RPI.
