Hawaii 3, CSUN 0; UH on NIVC list, various Aloha Friday things
CSUN at Hawaii 7 p.m. HST

Wahine among teams on Women’s NIVC watch list
110 on watch list. 2 have declined. not sure if UH is one of them. Wouldn’t be surprised if they were
IMHO it just gives the NCAA an excuse not to take more at-large teams from the smaller conference

For a while I thought that UH fans would get their wish. Cal Poly fell behind in the first two sets and Torrey van Winden hit negative. Somehow Cal Poly squeaked by in the first set in extended fashion.. In the second set, Ca Poly fell behind seven points, caught up and had set point. UCSB staved off six set points and Cal Poly couldn’t put them away. UCSB fought really hard winning 29-27. It seemed like they’d turn the tide. In the third set Torrey van Winden got hot and finally got into positive hitting percentage. She always starts very slow and then makes up later on. In the fourth set UCSB almost averted another bunch of match points. Cal Poly had to call two timeouts. Finally Savanah Neimen put them away. I give credit to UCSB that they fought hard and clung in stubbornly, giving Cal Poly all they could handle.. They never gave up. It was a nail-biter.
Usual lineup for UH. Koelsch, Granato, Burns, Iosia, Kahakai, Castillo, Maglio.
CSUN has lost six straight.
UH up 11-6 in a sloppy game. TO CSUN
Maglio with a solo, UH’s first block, makes it 21-17. TO CSUN
Castillo ends it 25-19.
3. a loss by Cal Poly would have been bad for Hawaii because of what it would do to the RPI.
UH was down 7-10. UH up 12-10 on Kahakai’s serve. TO CSUN
UH was up 17-12 and 18-13. CSUN closes to 18-16. TO Wahine.
UH challenging whether there was a touch on Granato’s attack. If there is none, UH’s lead would be 19-17.
Touch called. UH up 20-16.
UH up 21-16. TO CSUN
Awesome final point by Maglio. Went up for the overpass, looked like she was going to take a hard slam, she ended up with a soft drop shot inside the block. 25-21.
8. Why would a Cal Poly loss negatively affect Hawaii’s RPI? After all, Hawaii played against UCSB as well. So the RPI of UCSB went down. Wouldn’t that counteract the rise of RPI of Cal Poly? The math is confusing. Actually I did support Cal Poly winning UCSB. I only thought that Hawaii fans would have wished for Cal Poly to lose three times for UH to make first place in the Big West.
14. for one Cal Poly isn’t going to lose three times.
UCSB RPI of 200. It would not have helped Hawaii if the Gauchos had won.
Greeley serving for the first time this season.
Granato with back-to-back aces makes it 12-6. TO CSUN
CSUN challenging Castillo’s attack being in. If it’s good, UH would be leading 16-8.
Challenge not good. UH up 16-8. Ma’afala and Ross in for double subs.
It’s 18-8. TO CSUN
faiths serve is awesome. direct and decisive!
solo stuff by Ross. and UH ends up with a 25 -12
the one thing that needs to be worked on and fixed – no on, off serving
that said that running to the line just to jump and float is a no no
do it like faith simple, decisive and incredibly brutal!
that or if you going to jump then spin and compete for norenes nasty serve
Looks like Rado is playing amazing.
Taylor Higgins was great on the tv broadcast.
23. aye tayler higgins was great on the broadcast
the other time she looked great? when chewed by shoji 😀
Serious question….why wouldn’t UH accept an invite to the other tourney? Doesn’t that give them team a little more time to develop?
Match looked a lot more like Hawaii volleyball, except for few lapses, good strong finish. Do this for the last three matches with a fair chance to earn a spot in the postseason.
Burns definitely improving and her role will be big in future, Kahakai is right there with best in country, Maglio is an All American. Howling, Williams, Ma’afala, Ross gives Wahine strong core for the future. add recruits and will make Hawaii at the very least a top 20 team.
Just a side note, believed CSUN’s player of match was a 5’10” who hit for a great percentage and was in on her share of blocks as well. Imho, I’ll take a player of her stature and ability anyday.
Btw, remember that Aven Lee could also hammer the ball with the best as an OH, and Hawaii finished with with two final four appearances as well as finishing no. 2 in the nation. Hope she is giving our hitters lessons. She looked like a lot taller than her 5’8″.
,
I like the improvement this team has shown over the season. If we need to pay to play a few more games it cannot but help further development. I think Setaone is right. Don’t worry what the NCAA thinks, they have developed the shafting of UH into a fine art and they will continue to do so no matter how we finish the season. I love this senior class made up of a great group of kids, lets not end it any sooner than we have to.

Didn’t catch game on. Did Higgins say what’s she up to to these days. Grad school , work etc. The camera did love her.
25… One reason could be UH has to pay the first $15.000 for any travel and provide a financial guarantee to the NIVC, which UH may be able to cover. Something like that.

The difference between NCAA & NIVC is comparable to you waiting for Punahou to award you a full ride scholarship to their school vs. you paying your way to a public high school.
Re: Oct 14 blog post, answer to G Burns post 12. I didn’t see your post until today. I got the info about her injury from listening to Natasha on a post game TV interview.
The NIVC seems to be a little greedy. I think they have priced themselves out of making their tournament worthwhile. Thank you Islandman for the data.
That nivc tournament is beneath this program IMO doubt usc/ucla would go there and the wahine have the same history.
UH Men’s basketball and other schools go to the NIT, if they have a chance.
Re: Well make that same argument when the uh mens basketball team has various national championships, final fours and elite eights under their belt.

new thread up
The NIT is not the same as the NIVC
The NIT used to be the premier tournament
34. maybe greedy but they’re trying to get it off the ground, need to make some money somehow.
my thought, as expressed yesterday, this would not be good for non-power conferences.
It gives the NCAA selection committee a reason to take fewer from the small conferences
IMHO
Agree about that it’s beneath the program.
