Tuioti lands in Cleveland

Folks are wondering how Tony Tuioti, who was released as linebackers coach at the University of Hawaii after last season, ended up with the Cleveland Browns.

I’m told the connection that helped Tuioti get his foot in the door is Mike Smith, the co-defensive coordinator at Texas Tech who spent a season coaching with Tuioti at UH.

Smith played for the Browns’ new head coach, Mike Pettine, when Pettine was outside linebackers coach of the Baltimore Ravens in 2005.

Regardless of how he got there, it’s great to see one of the good guys get a break and a nice professional opportunity and challenge. It is often true that when one door closes another opens.

    Good morning Dave,

Tony is a class act and was an asset to the program at Manoa. When our son transferred in mid year from Weber State to UH, the only reason we were able to navigate the myriad of NCAA requirements was Coach Tony. He is a great recruiter and a great motivator. What a wonderful blessing to make it to ‘The Show’. Blessings to Coach Tony and his ohana and may he make the best of this chance.

Huge break for Tony but I know he will do well. Love it when good things come to good people.
