Rally 4 Rainbows set, petition circulating
I still think it’s too late; months, if not years too late. But Stephen Chinen’s plans for an organized protest to keep the nickname Rainbows for University of Hawaii’s mens sports are gaining some steam.
“Rally 4 Rainbows” is set for May 3, 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Bachman Hall. Those supporting Chinen and committed to attending include some former UH football players.
Chinen is also circulating a manifesto and petition, and said that athletic director Ben Jay has agreed to meet with him one-on-one. In February, Jay told the Star-Advertiser the name of all UH’s mens sports teams will be Warriors, effective July 1. (All women’s teams will officially be called Rainbow Wahine).

Stephen forget , the boss said no. We are the Warriors the men are Warriors not girly Rainbows. Ben, don’t give into this. You’re doing the right thing, for name recognition for once and for good! We all need to adapt to change on move onward not backward!

It’s a done deal, Rainbows embraces our skyline but the Warriors it is ever since June Jones anointed himself to re-brand UH with a new logo and name. Upper campus didn’t stop the change, nor did the Downtown Hui and major stake holders, so why would Mr. Chinen think that his petition and manifesto at this late date will bring about a change back to Rainbows. Mr. Jay is merely consolidating all the names out their and branding one for men, and another for the Na Wahine.
We are the WARRIORS! Get over it Mr Chinnen.

Why is Jay getting the guff from former FOOTBALL players?
The football team hasn’t been RAINBOW Warriors since 1999. If FOOTBALL players want to express their disdain over the removal of Rainbows, that ship has sailed to Dallas years ago.
Why on earth we can’t be ‘Rainbow Warriors’ is and has been a complete mystery to me ever since Jones unilaterally decided to drop the rainbow handle because of some deep hang up he has. Personally I’m not really attached to ‘rainbow’ one way or the other, but I certainly wouldn’t drop a university tradition that has been around for decades, simply because the Homosexual lobby decided to use the rainbow for its symbol or we all of sudden became worried that others might see our name as too ‘soft’ or ‘effeminate’…..its got nothing to do with our football team whatever and its a chance to stand out and educate mainland folks about the Hawaii traditions.
Look, back in the 60’s alot was made of Oregon States mascot ‘The Beavers’…a name that also doubled as a female quality as many of you know. Oregon State didn’t run out and change their names because they were afraid ‘pussies’ was going to be attached to their team! I mean, lets grow the hell up!!
“Lets go Bows” as a chant will never go away. When the game is tight thats what the fans automatically go to. Thank you Mr. Chinnen for your long and loyal support to UH.

I agree that there are more ‘important things’ to focus on: One of them might be not allowing someone to come in and play around with how we see ourselves. Guys who have this irrational fear of being labeled ‘rainbows’ as a result of some modern ‘reset’ of its definition need to get down and look inward. Its a name man, a nicely colored rainbow, its inspiring to look at and we have them damn near everyday in the HAWAIIAN ISLANDS. It attracts people, even cultivates the spiritual and artistic faculty in man. That some people find that irritating and or objectionable is a mystery to me.
What I find amazing is that anyone, and I mean anyone, would object to it!
Somehow I don’t think Ben Jay is going to change his mind. I see it as his first decisive move as AD and to change now would send the wrong kind of message that he can be easily swayed or influenced or bow to pressure. The AD has to be a leader and a decision maker based on the best interest of the department.
Let’s take a look at the all important thing, marketing of the nickname. Which nicknames will be best to make money for the school. The logo appears to have helped in selling a little more merchandize. A thorough examination should be made to find how the marketing of the rainbow can get more revenues and identity to go along with the warriors. Although winning does help what will people want to buy to support and identify with the University of Hawaii. Should an entirely new nickname be considered since the topic is under consideration? Or is the nickname be only a nickname and not attached to the marketing of the logo and the University of Hawaii?

Steve P, I agree with the name of Rainbow Warriors. Lets go Rainbows, has been around, for ages, sounds good. Just a thought, if the University drops the name Rainbows,(which it seems like they have) someone going to grab up the logos, shirts, etc and sell them as memorabilla, and make money. Excuse me but what are the ladys called?? Lady Warriors??

‘Somebody tell this rainbow lover to give it up already.’–as #18 knocks down a few strawmen. First of all the college was ‘Beaver College’, located in Beaver town…and they changed the actual name of the college…not the mascot.
The reference I made was to Oregon State, a division one school, like us, who are apparently a little more grown up about these things than we’ve been.
Next, I already mentioned I’m not attached to the ‘rainbow’ name…but what I am attached to is tradition and the prevention of someone unilaterally changing our mascot name and image—-which was doing just fine when we were kicking hell out of big name schools and winning the Holiday bowl (go watch the film) Rainbow warriors was a name with pride. Now, all of sudden we need to jettison it because of stupid reasons already listed? Give me a break.
I’m not ‘rainbow lover’, I am a UH football fan since 1968, am an older dude who isn’t mind screwed by generational ‘Darth-Vader’ imagery. Tough is a quality of the mind—not the imagery of a name and uniform—but of course you already know that—or did you?
Mr. Chinen is being both foolish and obstructive…The Warriors is the name of UH’s men’s teams and we are better for it. Being a UH grad in the 70s, I never liked the Rainbows moniker nor any of the UH merchandise. Now, I proudly wear UH gear and like being a Warrior alumni…
Move on and support the University!
As far as the merchandise of the earlier era is concerned, you’ll get no argument from me. Todays stuff is way better. Listen, disliking the change in image is not the same as not supporting the University—-I do, and did and always will.
Ben Jay… do not give in. Stick to your guns. You are doing a great job making the needed changes that will move our athletic program forward. This is a minor distraction so do not be sidetracked. “Warriors” is the best nickname. Changing back to Rainbow Warriors is a move backwards. I attended UH in the late 80s through early 90s while we were the Rainbow Warriors. The changes that have been made since my time there have been for the better–nickname, logo, uniforms. Don’t move backwards…keep moving forward and do not look back!!!
