Warrior Beat: Good loss for D-tackle
Doug Russell?
“No, he’s now Russ,” UH head coach Nick Rolovich said. “He lost the ‘ell.'”
Russell looks — and feels — an ‘ell’ of a lot better after dropping 45 pounds from last spring to this spring. Russell, who is 6 feet 5, now weighs 285.
“I’m moving a lot better,” said Russell, a defensive tackle/nose tackle.
Russell said he has been on a conditioning program for quite a while. “I hit a road block,” he admitted. “I was able to break through the road bock and drop the weight down.”
He said the plan is basic: Fewer “sugary stuff,” more cardio work.
He also received motivation from Rolovich, who suggested a move to offensive line.
“It was kind of a booster to get my weight back down,” Russell said. “They don’t want the D-linemen too big.”
On sticking to defense, Russell said: “It’s been my dream to play Division I football at D-tackle.”
GO WARRIORS !!!
Good job, Russ! Looking forward to seeing you play!
GO WARRIORS!!!
Glad to see Mr. Russell get some praise. I’ve had great expectations for him since we recruited him out of Seattle. Keep up the hard work Russ … we’re all cheering for you!
And there’s the answer for those who questioned why “Russ” was sitting. There’s usually a reason.
Congrats on the weight loss. Speaks volumes for mental toughness and commitment. Players like this will find their way into the rotation.
They’ve got some nice depth on defense, especially on the defensive line.
It seems like our D-Line has been thin for so long, glad we got some depth in that unit now.
I remember Russ Francis and his dad and brother wrestling. Local wrestling in Hawaii. Man. That Missing Link was something. The Avengers would have hard time with him.
I see you #66. Humble yourself and keep doing your best. Go Bows!

Russ looks fit, hope it translates into improved skill and playing time. Perhaps senior J.R. Hensley could take a hint with the extra poundage he is apparently carrying, by this summer, turning himself into a lean & mean blocking machine, with NFL potential.
