Warrior Beat: Garden State of mind

Quarterbacks Chevan Cordeiro and Cole McDonald warmed up on Thursday. / Photo by Stephen Tsai

PARK RIDGE, N.J. >> Another Thursday — even on the East Coast — meant another light practice for the Warriors.

The Warriors, wearing plain green dry-fit shirts and no helmets, went through plays and sets during the 90-minute session at Saint Joseph’s Regional High School in New Jersey.

They will have a more extensive practice tomorrow ahead of Saturday’s game against Army.

Slotback John Ursua

  2. Unkanesson September 13, 2018 10:35 am

Didn’t quite get this in before the last post was closed – I was playing the robot game…
On the subject of play-by-play announcers: May I vent?
There are times when Bobby Curran drives me rabid!! He OFTEN fails to describe a play, while going off on irrelevant tangents – an opposing player’s identity or number for example – or extended moments of silence while he and John Veneri watch their replay monitor, and I’m yelling at the radio, “What the **** happened???” They seem to forget that they’re on RADIO, that they are our eyes. Get the basics out FIRST: run or pass, by whom, yards gained or lost, down and distance. That’s play-by-play. Then, as time permits, get into the color – lesser details and what the monitor reveals. TV we can see for ourselves. Radio is different. Listeners don’t care about an opposing player’s number and whether or not you can read it!

  3. Unkanesson September 13, 2018 10:41 am

Looks like a squad of nene going through some drills there…

  4. haka September 13, 2018 10:41 am

Let’s hope Army lays a goose egg!
    Nice article about Coach Monken.
Wait, ST, did you get a meal ticket too?
    Go Warriors!
    Beat Army!

Hmmmn, a couple of those ducks have “Peking” written all over them…

  6. Da Punchbowl Kid September 13, 2018 10:50 am

Players look good! Food looks good! Was that a team meal, Stephen? When I go back East to visit fam and friends, wanna try Boston Market. They seemed to inspire a lot of local versions.

I’m thinking the geese are the Nene’s Canadian cousins, eh?

    GO WARRIORS!!!
    LIVE ALOHA/PLAY WARRIOR!!!

  7. Da Punchbowl Kid September 13, 2018 10:52 am

Did you mean “Peking Goose” Boola?

  8. ET September 13, 2018 10:53 am

Unkanesson, I listen to the opposing teams broadcast as you and I have the same opinion of our radio broadcasters. Sometimes, they have a problem with the names but you still know who they are talking about. Usually you can use stat cast and the audio streaming if you don’t have full video broadcast.

  9. wafan September 13, 2018 11:03 am

Ooo, haole nene! They are starting to head south. And, the leaves are starting to jump from the trees.

  10. Mytake September 13, 2018 11:30 am

Don’t even get me started on the play by play calling. It’s obvious there was no job audition.

  11. Bumby September 13, 2018 12:08 pm

    Radio play by play.

Best in Hawaii on the radio were Harry Kalas, Al Michaels, Les Keiter, Gene Good, Chuck Leahy.

Todays radio announcers should get of hold of any recording made while play by play were done by these radio professionals.

  12. Duster September 13, 2018 12:09 pm

  13. Ipu Man September 13, 2018 1:14 pm

to give us the details—LIVE! Not after the play is over.

  14. Ipu Man September 13, 2018 1:16 pm

He does ok before the ball is hiked, but after that it is usually SILENCE…

For those watching the game at 0600 Sat morning. Good idea to warn the neighbors about the noise cuz going have plenty cheers for UH! Ear plugs good or better yet, invite them over to tailgate. Tell them, “Beer and poke welcome”. 🙂

  19. truegreen September 13, 2018 3:10 pm

#2 Amen about the idiotic radio play-by-play guy. Everyone knows you need to give down and distance on every play, even TV announcers do it and you can see the play.

And he almost never gives the yard line on a pass or run so you wait agonizingly long to figure out how long the play went for and how close they are to a first down. Elementary stuff.

Once I didn’t even know it was a 50-yd flea flicker TD pass until I watched the replay on the news the next day because all he said was, “Moniz, hands it off…oh my…he’s all alone…TD Hawaii!”

  20. stephen c paschal September 13, 2018 3:23 pm

Bobby Curran has always had that problem. I’m a radio veteran and can always tell when a guy gets too caught up in the game and neglects his audience. I called his show last year and warned h about that. ” Always set the ball, time and distance” . all else is just gravy. but meaningless without the meat.

  21. Na Alii Pride September 13, 2018 3:27 pm

I’d like to add to the Play-by-play comments. Bobby has moments of not being able to describe what’s happening. That is NOT GOOD if you’re doing radio! Like #32 said, “Long pass down field for Kemp, and, … oh my.”

What da heck does “oh my” tell me?

  22. not Sean September 13, 2018 3:47 pm

Anything we can do to start the ball rolling on getting doofus and goofus off the radio and replaced? I don’t pray to doofus so I know he ain’t God. Gotta be something we can do.

  23. turfwar September 13, 2018 4:01 pm

BC may not be good but he’s still way easier to follow than Kekaula. That guy simply shouldn’t be doing play by play for any games. College, prep, pop warner…

  24. burro sabio September 13, 2018 4:10 pm

#37 – let’s work on getting the dumbarse off of this blog before we work on doofus.

  25. Chicken Grease September 13, 2018 4:31 pm

After their game against Wake Forest today, Boston College is ALSO 3-0. Hawaii is no longer the only 3-0 college 1A team now.

  26. Chicken Grease September 13, 2018 4:41 pm

There are times when Bobby Curran drives me rabid!! He OFTEN fails to describe a play, while going off on irrelevant tangents – an opposing player’s identity or number for example – or extended moments of silence while he and John Veneri watch their replay monitor, and I’m yelling at the radio, “What the **** happened???”

Curran is too slow for play-by-play in any other market. Hate it, too, in the past when the game would be out of hand for the Warriors and he goes, “[opponent] will improve to ___ and ____”. Wow. He figured that all on his own.

Veneri is pretty terrible too. Wouldn’t be able to operate in any other town’s radio or TV sports ventures. Also in the same category, except that if not for his, uh, local sports background, no way he would be doing play-by-play here. Sounds like he slurs. His brother’s worse—and all that’s missing in HIS high school radio play-by-play is him not saying “I’m pro-St. Louis! I’m pro-St. Louis!” every five mibutes during a broadcast.

The absolute worst? You barely need to think about it: the “please enunciate” Kekaula.

  27. Derek September 13, 2018 4:43 pm

Radio description of plays is very poor. For instance, all I hear is “back to pass, he throws, touchdown Hawaii.” Then he says a few seconds later” John Ursua”. That’s why live TV in HD is the best because you can see everything clearly, plus replays even though the announcers may not be very good. However, most announcers try to do a good job. Sometimes the pronunciation of poly players are butchered, meaning they didn’t prepare well. I refuse to listen Hawaii games for football on the radio. No need to.

  28. Chicken Grease September 13, 2018 4:53 pm

It’s weird, though. I always have the radio on while I watch these games. Their information helps. Could be better. I mean, you gotta have that radio on (or not) if Kelaula’s announcing. We really just need Miano, who is is simply THE most underrated sports person in Hawaii. Sad. Want Rolo to be our Bear Bryant, but, heck, if he decides to leave, Miano’s gotta be given a shot.

ESPN 1420AM Josh Pacheco has a great radio voice. Haha. Someone once said he sounds like a character out of The Simpsons or sounds like Pee Wee Herman. But HE can fit tons of information into seconds. He did the play-by-play for that 7 OT N.I. game and does an excellent job with UH baseball. That station had better not hope Bristol don’t come a-callin’ for him.

The all white look is a bad luck uniform. They’ll certainly lose.

That looked so darned bad at the Sugar Bowl (and WHY are people still wearing “Georgia vs. Hawaii” Sugar Bowl shirts?!??). And like a dummy, I was thinking, “oh they’re gonna win this with their all-whites!” 🙄

Well. They’ll have that terrific black trousers. That’s very fashionable with a white jersey. Like 007 formal wear-ish.

Hawaii should know better with our afffinity with the Pacific and things Asian, at least in proximity, than anybother school—“all white” usually signifies death in Asian circles.

  30. Mytake September 13, 2018 6:09 pm

I nominate the guy that calls the volleyball games on the radio. He’s able to keep up with the action which is at least twice as fast as football. I’m going to drag my ass to watch the game so I won’t have to guess what’s going on.

Agree with you guys about play by play on the radio. The broadcaster’s first focus should be on “play by play” with random drivel and statistics and whatnot only if there’s time for it between plays. TV broadcasters can get away with it on more uneventful plays because viewers can SEE what’s happening.

  38. Fan of TV and Radio September 13, 2018 7:32 pm

@Chicken Grease, who are you? Honest question, have you ever played football or called a game on TV or Radio? Just curious…

You wanna know something bobob? I have stopped taking so-called fans, like you, seriously.

There are a bunch of you out in the community. Simply out to make the football team look STUPID. O.K.? That getup you (and others) suggest only look like some damn pajamas.

What is it with you so-called Hawaii fans? Huh? Trying to get in touch with some inner part of you that the rest of us would rather not hear about? What is it? Some nephew or niece ended up going to a mailanland school so you’re now all like, “let’s make UH our little pet. No like make ‘A’ if Hawaii beat them if they play ‘em. At leas’ we can say Hawaii get stupid unifo’ms.”

The 1970s are over. You want rainbows, unicorns, fairy tales? Maybe football (much less sports) isn’t for you.

  59. Hilo fan September 13, 2018 10:41 pm

Regarding the play by play- in my opinion Curran is a very good daily talk radio guy but a very poor play by play guy. Being from Hilo and listening to Josh Pacheco doing UHH basketball and high school basketball and football he is a very good,at both but in my opinion can be quite irritating as a talk show guy although I haven’t listened to him since his move to Oahu. Hopefully he’s gotten better.
Is Pumbaa William’s playing on Saturday?

  60. Savich September 13, 2018 11:21 pm

Is this something anyone should know? TF Wells or Bobby Curran & Jon Veneri. 1420 AM radio. In New York or hiding out again. At bay, watching the video live, calling it.

  61. suckkabooya September 13, 2018 11:40 pm

Weird, contentious (via dissatisfaction), and a little phobic today. But man, mostly weird. I think maybe age (eyesight especially) has caught up with Bobby Curran because he was really good with Kekaula back in the day. Not as sharp (all your skills) as you age. He’s fine by me.

  62. suckkabooya September 13, 2018 11:57 pm

To me Josh Pacheco was an “acquired taste”. Hard pill to swallow at first. Even his play by play style. Condescending. Plus he’s a Neighbor Island “homer”. Hard for us (Oahu people) to “swallow” especially when he has a good point or he’s absolutely right (which was most of the time, especially with Konawaena Girls basketball, his go to card). But somewhere, I think fairly recently, he softened somewhat. He is much easier to listen to and even meshes well on both Bobby’s show and with the “Animals”. Count me in as a fan. He does have a bright future.

  63. Maddog50 September 14, 2018 2:34 am

Army is going to have to bring 5 or 6 to get Qb pressure on Qb. That’s gonna create voids. They were fairly good at times of jamming receivers at LOS vs Duke. Still think they have trouble with our speed and a receiver or ball carrier in space. The defensive key is actually the interior DL getting gap penetration and forcing them to option the ball. The FB slant is not as lethal as the dive and they have turned the ball over on the option. They are gonna score points, I figure ar least 21. So as usual we need a bunch on O and getting them in a situation where they have to throw takes blockers out of the scheme we can get pressure. Right now I don’t see the QB as a lethal weapon running the ball. We will see. It still gonna take an all out effort to win this but a nice 2-3 score lead at times will change the course of the game-gotta get that early. GoWarriors!!! One last thing if I never see those throwback jerseys like NC or anything like them I will be happy!

  64. Boolakanaka September 14, 2018 4:51 am

#41 I love those throwbacks….those we are jerseys back in the day! Great idea!

  65. Boolakanaka September 14, 2018 4:58 am

#65, good observation about Army’s intended pressure. And for a variety of reasons, I think it bodes well in our favor. It means that their DBs will be one on one with our receivers, and in some packages, also takes their will linebacker into the pass coverage. Our receivers have clearly proven to be both elusive and out quicking straight D1 programs, so I certainly like that match up. Two, if they don’t get home on their blitz packages, now they have to contend with a very athletic QB that has legit 4.5 speed, so I can see Cole having some real opportunity for chunk yardage.

  66. cappie the dog September 14, 2018 5:08 am

    2.

I like Bobby Curran but I’ll concede this.

When a player is at the charity stripe, he will talk over the actual shots.

I can tell if the player made it or not depending on audience reaction.

But some of the Big West road games, you basically have a neutral court, so I can’t tell if it’s the UC-Riverside fans or Hawaii transplants who are clapping, or not clapping.

  67. cappie the dog September 14, 2018 5:22 am

The most underrated sports person in Hawaii is Lori Santi.

  68. Inyoface September 14, 2018 5:48 am

We’re really lucky to have beaten Rice, the final score is kind of deceiving. If it wasn’t for the low blocking penalty, Cole recovering the fumble or Dakota receiving the onside kick, it could’ve been a whole different outlook. BEAT ARMY

Since there’s a sub-topic on the PBP announcers, I think the guy that does OCSports for Hawaii football is the worst PBP caller that I’ve heard in all my years of watching any football.
It’s really hard to watch the replay with the sound on.

I hope this doesn’t offend anyone, this is just my honest 2-cents
