Warrior Beat: Former sprint champ joins Warriors
Grey Ihu, a former Pac-Five sprint champion, has joined the Warriors as an inside receiver. Here’s the skinny:
> He is 6 feet and 180 pounds.
> He will have three years to play three UH seasons.
> As a junior in 2016, Ihu won the state championships in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. He did not defend his title in 2017 because of a hamstring injury. Ihu said he competed in track as a way to train for football.
> He also is capable of running 40 yards in 4.45 seconds.
> He trains under Kealoha Pilares, which is a two-fold advantage. Pilares knows what it takes to become an elite athlete and he knows how to play the slot in Nick Rolovich‘s version of the four-wide offense. Ihu is expected to play slot.
> Ihu did not receive any football offers as a University Lab School senior in 2017. He went to Campbellsville University, an NAIA school in Kentucky, for three semesters. He enrolled at UH last week. He will participate in the offseason conditioning program and spring practice. He said he is motivated to prove he is a deserving Division I player.
> His father, Nathan Ihu, earned a letter as a member of the 1993 UH men’s volleyball team.
> His uncommon first name came from his mother’s favorite beverage — Earl Grey tea.
Best of luck to Grey. Also one of my favourite teas.
Speed kills! Welcome aboard Grey
Sounds similar to Ewaliko. more speed always helps
Welcome, Grey!
GO JR BOWS!
GO WARRIORS!
Speed doesn’t take days off.
I think the Clemson football team is accustomed to much better food. Cheap host.
and the players keep rollin in — a good sign!
what will they be like in 2 years?
Burro Sabio:
I was surprised at the meal. Times have changed. Student-athletes, particularly those who win football championships, eat very well. Lots of schools even have their own juice bars for student-athletes.
Then again, when I used to teach, I always brought McChickens or scones for the students. Can’t learn on an empty stomach.
A-House:
These are interesting pickups.
But athletes are athletes. If you start with the good athletic skills, a role can be found.
By the way, people tell me that Chance Kalaugher is going to be a good one. They tell me he has a very aggressive persona when he’s on a court or field. I’m told he’s a very good addition.
Per my last post, I do believe Chance is the aggressive and overtly physical type. Stats don’t lie, in just a little over 250 minutes of playing last season in basketball, he had over 40 personal fouls or the equivalent of fouling out of seven games…..that’s a whole lot. I think he found the right sport.
Got a chance (no pun) to watch Kalaugher in the summer league. He is indeed an aggressive player with a bit of an attitude (in a good way). Good mindset for a DE.
Hard to believe that the warrior’s recruiting is for Hawaii born athletes who need to be schooled from scratch. Be nice to see the warriors sign a few more good player with football pedigree.
Yep, grab some athletes then form them into whatever they can to make the best contribution. Weight room every day with Chance. Maybe can get down to 4.35 too. Just work out with Phillips and Davis.
Watching Kalaugher’s hudl defensive video he is a “hands” grab tackler. Growing up learning football in the 70’s and 80’s we were taught not to tackle that way. But with last season’s defense we saw a lot of contact initiated with the “head down”, leading to lots of missed tackles or straight whiffs. I think at least one D lineman needs to grab tackle. Mix up and vary the techniques a little.
Stutz II to Annapolis, to join Kenny N’s staff.
” … Former University of Hawaii receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann is expected to join the Navy football team as an offensive assistant coach.
The deal, which is expected to be finalized tomorrow, would call for Stutzmann to work with the Navy quarterbacks, receivers and A-backs. … “
I personally think Grey Ipu would be great as a defensive cirner back because we need speed in the defensive back field.
We have a ton of receivers presently.
Does a Rolo ever read this blig?
Nice gets! It never hurts to have speed, or a fiery defensive end among the recruits. Somebody’s already made the pun I’m sure, but now we can say, that no matter what, the Warriors get Chance!
Good luck to Billy Ray and his lovely new bride!
Go Warriors!!!
Whitey… these players are not really going to have to learn from scratch. Both Gallagher and Ihu played football in HS. It just that they were better in other sports. Chance as a better basketball player and Grey was a better track guy. It doesn’t me these two kids cannot grow into decent players with better coaching.
Chance is 6-6, can jump and athletic. Ihu is athletic and fast. Both got physical tools.
Good luck Stutz…and we lose another one…still making a name but ….. a good one lost.
Will the Polynesia bowl be on national tv?
No. It may be televised on Spectrum. You’ll need to order the game.
Saturday 19th of this month. I’m pretty sure there will be little bit people, so I’ll say the concourse will be open, but the upper decks all closed off.
iGrokSpock: aren’t you with another forum or blog? Your name sounds familiar.

Chance will make a good TE. Short and mid-range routes will win games for Hawai’i.
Where did you hear that news on Stutzmann? On Navy man.
Is the LA Rams still coming to Aloha Stadium next season, this year? August 31, 2019
You’re lemon KIF.
Keelan Ewaliko is back on Maui or is he in the NFL?
Ooops…Billy Ray…good luck go get em..!

good afternoon. When are we going to see the new 2019 schedule for UH football?
I sure would like to see also the new stadium. As you know Halawa will have 2 new sky rises near Aloha Stadium. So that means they’ll either keep Aloha Stadium for awhile longer, or they’ll actually go ahead and build a new stadium with lesser seats available.
I think they will re-build a new stadium.
FYI,
It looks like The Polynesian Bowl May be on TV live at 7pm this Saturday on The CBS Sports Network (unless Spectrum blocks it).
Article about The Polynesian Bowl insert in today’s newspaper.
#33 I’m in Cali so hopefully can see um. If it’s not televised nationally, I think it should be, I’m sure it would draw interest around the country.
I saw the roster out for Polynesian bowl. Kicking butt. Huge players.
You want good comments from me, don’t put a name down.
I only go by the name Savich. Any other name that goes on here by someone else, gets the heev ho. I trash the players.
Saturday night. 7:00 p.m.
I probably will watch the game. Delayed. They’ll show it again. So I’ll catch it then. Out night.
🙂
I’m actually waiting for the schedule to come up. 2019 season football Hawai’i. I’ll be working there again. Aloha stadium. 🙂
It will my 3rd season of play. Exciting. Not really just business. This is fun, blogging. So I do blogging and get paid by working at Aloha Stadium. Fun heh! 🙂
I work during the days. Sort of. I’m a day person. But, it only 1 night. So, can do….
I do work at days.
I hope we can get one weight room “freak” in this class, walk on or recruit. Just to sway the “culture” toward strength. Kind of “finesse” as far as physicality right now. Maybe try to get (one or) two “nutz” (one extroverted like David Maeva and one quiet assassin like Nate Jackson) guys, one weight room “freak” (like Marques Kaonohi), one more (heavy/strong if can) player from Asia (China, Japan, Korea or even Mongolia get Sumo size) and of course one more from New Zealand or Australia. Got to get a little international to extend the fan base (if can). Hopefully now or in the future. Got to get “More Physical” too. Soon.
Abbot to UH, per another blog.

Strength and speed kills ! Coaches have to coach tho, especially on the O side. Expand that playbook or get out of the way!
