Warrior Beat: Back in the running
On a wet and ugly morning made for hot cocoa and covers pulled to the eyelids, the Warriors brought the “juice” and a blanket of enthusiasm.
“The boys came out hungry,” running back Dayton Furuta said. “They were playing hard. They were playing fast. There was a lot of juice today. I like seeing the running backs finishing their runs, and Cole (McDonald) making the right reads. It was good energy today. We were trying to bounce back.”
Any emotional hangover from Saturday’s 50-20 loss to Fresno State was not apparent during today’s 2-hour practice. The start was delayed for about 30 minutes because of the heavy downpour.
The running attack has been stagnant the past three games against active defenses and inconsistent execution.
“Our group,” running back Fred Holly said, “we try to be the spark on offense. We’re trying to help our offense get going.”
How about some new running plays as some have suggested ?
Howzit Tsaikos!
Not doubting that the team is working hard to stop the three game losing skid but how can you guage in practice if the offense is improving when our defense hasn’t been playing up to par either?
I would rather see some new pass plays targeting the running backs. Swing passes, screen passes, whatever will help get them the ball in open space with the opportunity to make a defender miss.
Hit the ground running! Sling that ball! Hit somebody!
GO WARRIOR!!!
A good high energy practice after this past one is a good sign. Can’t compete if your practice is crap-sense something good in the air. You can’t keep showing up poorly when in the past you looked considerably better-GoWarriors
Maybe practice, practice, practice same plays, different result. What do I know? Huh?
Bring da juice baybee!
Excited for another game on Saturday!
Good times, good friends, good fun!
Go Warriors!
Bring it!
Beat Utah State
We’re getting to the meat and potatoes part of the season. Anything can happen, let’s go.
Extend Rolos contract another 3 years.
10.
I’m pretty sure you’re being sarcastic, but I think Hawaii has no choice.
Unless Hawaii commits to the flex-bone, I am all in with Coach Rolovich.
No not sarcastic. He has a young team and still recruiting talent.
Being I Hawaii I think sometimes we play too humble at times. Smash them in the mouth and take no prisoners.
I was wondering if it’s illegal for the running back to catch a pass from the backfield. No swing passes so is he considered a lineman?
3. Mongoose, more of these:

Coach Rolo is the right combination of the many attributes needed to be our coach. I hope he’s around for a long time.
Where are the commitments from recruits?
PONO: IIRC, Rolo said on his radio show tonight that they’re “in” on some good WRs, plan to build offensive line with HS recruits, of which they have two committed (one must be John Wa’a’s cousin from the NW), and on defense will focus on the line and secondary.
Rolo also said he’s not as concerned as he was before in locking up players in the early signing period. He said P5 schools will be aggressive in signing players early, leaving many good players available for NLI day in February. Of course, the recent skid can’t be helping with recruiting so it goes without saying that it’s critical for Hawaii to win at least one of its final three games, and the Hawaii Bowl.
Rolovich needs to be under contract for as long as he decides the length should be. We need him. He’s still young and learning. Lots of potential to be the next June Jones Jr. Once he builds the connections Coach Jones had he will be the Coach we’ve always “dreamed” we wanted here. He’s not there yet but he is “the one”. For sure. On the same trajectory as June. Just two or three years behind (askew). I consider this year as his “year one” essentially re-setting the program in his “personalized” direction. A work in progress yes, but full of potential. We are lucky to have him.
Can the defense hold? It seems like they gave up too many points. As it stands, nothing has changed. Their defense is still crap.
14. Anything behind line of scrimmage is a legal pass. Even if they drop the ball, just pick it up and run.
They can stop putting in #33 Penei Pavihi. LB. He’s a horrible player. Defense.
I got – 18 points for Utah State before game time. Winning the game? I got Utah State as favored to win no matter what the odds are.
I take from the picture of Furuta, Green Jerseys this week.
We have to remember Hawaii is playing against many team loaded we Seniors and Juniors. And Utah State is no exception, there O line and D Line have way more experience that Hawaii. Utah State does have a young QB that is listing 6’4″ 225Lbs Sophomore named Jordan Love. Kinda the similar to QB Cole McDonald Sophomore and 6’4″ but minus the O line full of juniors and seniors.
A lot of these teams we play like Fresno State will have a rebuilding year next season. That is the ebb and flow of the game, one or two years your team is loaded with experience and play makers. The they all graduate and it rebuild time. Sometimes your can reload if you build solid depth but that takes time that most College Football Coaches don’t have before they are dismissed.
We have to realize this season is another rebuilding season with such a young team. Making the Hawaii Bowl will help build this young team up for next season and help with recruiting as well.
Live Aloha/Play Warrior
Go Warriors of Hawaii
Great Morning All!
At some point during their first season, Freshmen gotta realize that they are no longer “rookies” and can start playing like veterans…
Practicing the right way is a good sign
…back to the tables!
12.
I apologize for misinterpreting you.
13.
Aren’t we too undersized to smash people in the mouth? That is why other teams smash Hawaii in the mouth.
The pro set was never going to work.
Because isn’t “three yards and a cloud of dust” one component of this offensive ideology?
We hear about how well practices go. It appears practice is not translating over to game day
hmm….I’m starting to see a pattern here. BS is the OC and Running backs coach. Two things that are bad. Stagnant play calling and bad run production. BS needs to be replaced.
Speedy recovery for #5. Put the Powerade on IV stat. We need him this Saturday!
I think Pavihi will be the anchor of this linebacking group that will be preety deep next season despite losing Jahlani. So many players rotated in this year and got meaningful reps this year. Pavihi was one that had big play ability using phisicallity. Batoon’s schemes put different responsibilities on different guys that at times seemed to minimize their individual skillsets. Especially Mautautia. But next year he should have everything figured out. Prichard returns and Bowers looks like he has the specific skillsets for Batoon’s style. Scott has made several plays this year. So has Sanitoa. Bethley, Time, Picanco, all had role’s in this defense. Just looking for an identity for this group. They can develop that starting right now with Tavai being out. Make plays. “Intimidate”. Next year though “solid”.
pro set is a formation, not an offense.
Ever the optimist. USU has racked up 63 points per game against 4 opponents who have a combined record of 7-26. Ya I know they beat up BYU which was the same BYU effort that lead to a loss to NIU at home 7-6 last week. NIU is a top tier MAC program. Yep I know that they gave MSU a run. MSU is not who they have been lately. So on 11-05-2011 USU recognizes that date that the entire program changed at Aloha stadium as Chuckie Keaton led USU to a dramatic come from behind victory. All that said not looking for anyone to take exception with this it is all factual. I know exactly what this team has looked like for the past few weeks in all phases. Being the optimist there is no reason a passionate response and game can not lead to the same outcome for the Warriors-so simply stated, GoWarriors
