Tick-tock, tick-tock … job is on the clock

If anyone — from you to your cousin’s best friend’s step-brother — is interested in becoming a UH assistant football coach, it would be best to apply by today’s deadline.

Today is the fifth business day since UH posted the opening for the coaching job vacated when Mayur Chaudhari resigned as special teams coordinator to work for the the Atlanta Falcons. According to H.R. rules, UH may begin reviewing and vetting candidates tomorrow.

You, your cousin’s best friend’s step-brother and Bill Belichick still have a shot without applying by today. That’s because applications will be accepted until the job is filled. But it’s like getting poi malasadas at Kamehameha Bakery: the best chance is to already be in line when the doors open.

Good luck to all the candidates.

The BYU baseball team arrives in town this morning ahead of a four-game series against the ‘Bows. The series concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday.

Doubleheader?

Against BYU?

That sound is the time machine taking UH fans back to 1981 when Radford High graduate Peter Kendrick beat the ‘Bows in both games of a doubleheader to deliver BYU the WAC championship.

Kendrick, a left-hander, pitched two complete games — seven innings in the first, nine in the nightcap — and allowed 12 hits the entire day.

In the NCAA Regionals, Kendrick pitched a one-hitter to beat Stanford. The lone Cardinal hit? That was by John Elway.

Kendrick was inducted into the BYU Hall of Fame.

A bunch of us were at Robert Kagawa’s house watching the UH-BYU doubleheader. We kept saying: Kendrick is gonna tire, right?
    He never did.
As a Mets fan, I went through that again seven years later when Orel Hershiser pitched four times — three starts and relief — in a nine-day span as the Dodgers won the NLCS.
I was so pissed I made a pact never to take Hershiser on my fantasy baseball team, the Metofers. (Met … o-fer. Get it? Never mind.)

For Basebows, I like to reminisce about the 1980 season when we were led by a freshman Chuck Crim and freshman closer Bryan Duquette. We should have beaten UA. They didn’t have a loser’s bracket for the championship game before. Hawaii was undefeated in the winner’s bracket and UA had 1 loss and it was a one-game winner take all. In 1982 and 1983 seasons, I would walk down from Gateway to watch the games once they opened up the gates in the 7th inning.

I too am a Mets fan, as I was a living in New York in the Miracle year of 1969.

I graduated from Radford so no love lost for Kendrick.

I trust Rolo will get a good special teams guy. ST are a big part of the game!

If my “cousin’s best friend’s step-brother” is reading this, please introduce yourself. I don’t believe we’ve met.

  6. Stephen Tsai February 20, 2018 10:50 am

There’s this well-repeated story about UH losing to Arizona in the title game of the 1980 World Series. Les Murakami is on the top of the dugout steps, vowing that the ‘Bows will return.
They don’t … well, not so far.
It’s one of life’s lessons on appreciating the moment. Sometimes people don’t get second chances. The Falcons don’t go back to the Super Bowl.
    Dammit, Orel Hershiser.

  7. thomas aka koakane February 20, 2018 10:52 am

additional information on the Kendrick story, his mom was my step dad niece. Her husband spent two weekends videoing the UH team games against other teams prior to their contest. He sent to the BYU coaches on the rainbows.
Did it make an difference…… your figure it out.

I went to a funeral where they served poi malasadas before the memorial. They had to usher people into the service because they were so good.

Mr. Tsai you’re exactly right. A lot of Hawaii fans appreciated the moment to follow the Warriors to the Sugar Bowl. Some of my co workers that went insisted that it might never happen again so “we gotta go!”. I always had the belief that it (a Major Bowl Game) would happen every so often because we were finally a good program. The amount of attendees were so unexpected by the media and athletic department. They have fond memories of the game despite the bad loss. Stuff happens (bad stuff) to the program, things (stadium, fan base, etc.) erode. Now back to square one again. At least things are looking up for a resurgence. I should have went (to the Sugar Bowl) when I had the chance. Well ……maybe next time. C’mon Coach Rolo.

    Looking for that special someone…
Don’t forget the walk-on tryouts on March 7th.
    Must be present to win

    Go Warriors!

    Dr. Kagawa is da man

  13. cappie the dog February 20, 2018 12:26 pm

Dr. Kagawa hit the hardest ball I have ever witnessed in person at Les Murakami Stadium. Gone in five seconds over the left field wall.

Didn’t the Rainbows beat BYU on the road to win the WAC Tournament one year?

Does anybody know which Big West schools are blocking the concept of a conference tournament?

  14. NotNasti February 20, 2018 1:09 pm

J-dog, Cappie: I think you guys are confusing Dr. Robert Kagawa (Wahine BB team doctor) with Ross Kagawa (da Hanapepe kid). Ross Kagawa played for Coach Les and was a hard-nosed Lenny Dykstra type player. Yes, they are related. I know both of them personally, as on of my best friends is a Kagawa. Robert, I don’t think could hit one out of “the Les” even if given 100 tries.

  15. NotNasti February 20, 2018 1:11 pm

By the way, ST is a doppleganger of my best friend “Kagawa.”

  16. Maddog50 February 20, 2018 2:01 pm

Let’s get this last piece of the puzzle in place. Any more roster changes get em done and move this to a higher gear! I’m sure we will have a way new look personnel wise and sure we’ll be sporting new Uni combos. Hell even some talk about a new stadium emerging-ya I know it’s just a start but……GoWarriors

  17. Stephen Tsai February 20, 2018 4:02 pm

    Dr. Kagawa — Bobby K — is/was a heck of a softball player.
We were on the same team for about 20 years, I think. The Kruisers. We also had Mike Hogan, who was sort of like Mike Trout. That was back in the day when you could play at Cartwright Field or Moiliili Field without stepping on someone’s underwear in the outfield.

  18. ai-eee-soos February 20, 2018 4:25 pm

Gov. releases $10 mill for Stadium Special Fund.

That’s $10 mill for an environmental impact study and

a master plan. This part should take 18 – 24 months.

    After that … ???

Read the ferd’s column, which is firewalled.

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid February 20, 2018 5:41 pm

All this talk about a new stadium. That’s excellent. My question is, where will the Warriors play their home games during construction?

  20. 808WarriorFan February 20, 2018 5:58 pm

    #7 … it’s BROK DA MOUTH stuff … Kamehameha Bakery …

  21. al February 20, 2018 6:15 pm

DPK…The Stanford stadium was demolished as soon as the last game in 2005 was played November. 26, 2005 and the first game was played September 16, 2006_
    Can.

#20 … if we can get the same costruction companies that build the condos in Kakaako then no problem.

  23. seewhy February 20, 2018 7:16 pm

    RE: #20

Sorry al. I hate to break it to you, but the state cannot finish any projects on time, or on budget. Look at the recent projects like the UH rec center (16 months delayed) and the TC Ching Complex ($16 mill. over budget). I would love a new stadium, honest. However, UH’s past record on construction projects just reflects their inept ability to do so.

  24. oneseason February 20, 2018 7:23 pm

Regarding Fred’s article on a new football stadium … I look forward to the advocates documenting past examples where public-private partnerships have succeeded for college football stadiums … “The Stadium Authority envisions defraying some of those costs through a public-private partnership redevelopment of the nearly 80 acres beyond the stadium’s immediate footprint.” … Innovation can be great, but the risks have to be properly assessed. The current Aloha Stadium might be a worthy case study in risk assessment during design trade studies.

  25. clyde February 20, 2018 7:29 pm

IIRC, Aloha Stadium would remain functional while the new stadium is being constructed adjacent to it. I believe one proposal said construction of the new stadium would take two years. (uh, huh).

  26. Falcon Dad February 20, 2018 7:49 pm

They should rebuild the stadium one section at a time. North end zone (year 1), South end zone (year 2), ewa side (year 3), etc…. Should take four years, wouldn’t miss any home games,. Add luxury boxes and other amenities. They did this for some stadiums on the mainland. can’t remember which ones.

  27. amela February 20, 2018 8:27 pm

Let the Warriors play in Oakland it’s not being used. Bring back the black uniforms it’ll make them run fast or maybe look fast at least.

  28. roygbivs February 20, 2018 11:14 pm

    Spring Ball….

    Let’s get to it!!!

  29. ALLAN February 21, 2018 1:37 am

IF NEW STADIUM IS TO BE BUILT NEXT TO OLD ONE STILL BEIN USED IN THE INTERIM, WHERE WILL THE PARKING BE?

  30. CentralPA February 21, 2018 7:03 am

Thinking out of the box – Play home games is Las Vegas during construction, get a casino to sponsor free telecasts in Hawaii for the period, get the MWC to eliminate the travel subsidy while our team is playing on the mainland and let construction proceed for 12-18 months. Save money and build a following with free telecasts of an entire season or two. Could even play games in Bay Area or LA too.

  31. burro sabio February 21, 2018 7:05 am

#22 – they didn’t use the best of contractors on those jobs. Private projects can finish on time because they don’t have to go with the low bid.

  32. burro sabio February 21, 2018 7:06 am

#28 – and when do the players go to class???

  33. Warrior fan 808 February 21, 2018 7:47 am

Ever thought it would be reasonable to build a new stadium at UH west Oahu? Or on campus? Replace aloha stadium with a new exhibition center and 15,000 seat arena that can hold bigger events, and some NBA games. That lot can hold a exhibition center, arena and parking garage, probably a couple hotels too

  34. Andrew February 21, 2018 8:13 am

    28

That’s so outside the box, you can’t even see the box.

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid February 21, 2018 8:21 am

    Brother al – #20
One would hope we can do a turn around like that here. I hope that a fool proof contingency is in place for ensuring we can get the job done.

    kev-1 – #21
Good point! LOL! I like your thinking!

  36. RSYmoney February 21, 2018 8:51 am

While the stadium is being built either play home games at Maui’s War Memorial Stadiun and charge more for tickets or play all away games and pocket millions to be used for new weight room on lower campus. Other outside the box thinker

  37. Maddog50 February 21, 2018 9:32 am

With Spring practice right around the corner the DE position will be stocked with a bunch of newcomers that will provide both size talent and depth. I think the most exciting group is one already in place with well known somewhat known and soon to be known- Tavai, Matautia, Mageo-Okeke, Pritchard, Pavihi, Mulanga-Look, Falamalu, Faagua, Picanco, Gouveia, and Scott. That is and awful lot of material to work with. Coaches Banker and Batoon should have a lot of fun instilling talent and tenacity back into the line backing core. I’m looking forward to some of the little known and somewhat known to develop into key elements of the defensive front. If Coach Batoon is bent on attacking and speed I’d say he has sufficient resources at hand. One thing the has plagued the defense in my opinion is execution of an attacking front-I prefer the concept of attack with intent and purpose to stop a gain rather than the same to create a loss. So many times these last few years we had wreckless over penetration that resulted in missed tackle and overruns that created seams and gaps-This group has a ton of talent and depth for this conference-I would say at this time the most talented segment of the team coming into the spring! GoWarriors!!!!

  38. Inyoface February 21, 2018 10:17 am

What’s the biggest capacity football field besides Aloha Stadium, Roosevelt High?

  39. Thomas aka koakane February 21, 2018 10:59 am

Reposting BYU Kendrick story. His mom is my step dad’s neice. Two weeks before they played UH his father video the UH games against other college teams and sent to their coaches. 1981 don’t know if it helped …… you figure it out.

  40. suckkabooya February 21, 2018 11:01 am

I think Maui could be a good idea. Spread out the four home conference games so more Oahu fans can make the trip. Support tourism there while the new stadium is being constructed. The remaining games can all be road or neutral (how about Australia or Canada) games. At least two body bag games to make it worth it. Maybe keep most of those games In the Western time zone. I think the team can still win once they get used to routine. We need the new Aloha Stadium.
