The story of a helmet
In a pleasant surprise, Geri Ichimura learned she sponsored lineman Eperone Moananu’s new helmet.
Na Koa, the football team’s booster club, had solicited donations to purchase new helmets for the Warriors. Ichimura submitted a donation. Her name was picked randomly, and then written on the inside of Moananu’s helmet. The helmets were unveiled during a Na Koa ceremony for donors yesterday.
A few years ago, Ichimura, a retired educator, was part of an accreditation team reviewing high schools in American Samoa. It was during a trip when she met Moananu.
Ichimura also met the uncles of Viane Moala, a defensive tackle who also would sign with the Warriors.
In another coincidence, Ichimura’s son Garett and football booster Dara Young were named sponsors of Moala’s helmet.

There were four people who bought 10 helmets. Brian Kajiyama was one of them.

Former UH receiver Greg Salas bought a couple helmets.

The helmets match and look good when paired with the uniform. On Facebook, someone commented the helmet looked like the Jack-in-the-box antenna ball (from circa 2011). I dug out my antenna ball today and it is remarkably close except for the ventilation holes on the real helmet. Hopefully Jack-in-the-Box will pick up on this and have another promo… 🙂
Well DPK, I tried to distract everyone from the mascot and tree thing last night by saying you could do a lap around the field waving a flag after the first touchdown. Upon further review, maybe we’ll stick with a small tree waved from atop a golf cart after each touchdown instead. I’ll drive if Stretch can get us a golf cart… 🙄

Okay, football is almost upon us. I am excited for this year’s team. Just hoping there will be at least 25,000 for the season opener at Aloha Stadium.
