Rolo goes to the mat to reward QB Hughes
Quarterback Hunter Hughes could have danced all night.
In an elaborate scheme concocted by that mad genius — head coach Nick Rolovich — Hughes was brought into the ring during last night’s WWE show in the Blaisdell Arena.
It was there where Rolovich, who had accompanied New Day, pulled out the manila folder containing a football scholarship. But Rolovich said Hughes would have to dance for it.
It evoked memories of three years ago, when Hughes was asked to dance during a football practice.
“That was a little embarrassing but I’m willing to take it,” Hughes said.
It was an emotional moment for Hughes, who arrived in Hawaii as part of a non-profit Christian organization that helped people worldwide. Hughes had successfully earned a spot on the UH spring roster following a tryout in 2014.
But Hughes was cut after spring practice. He tried out again in March 2015, then finally rejoined last year. Although he has not played in a game, much less taken a snap with the first or second units in practices, he was voted to the 14-player leadership council during the offseason.
“He may never play for us, but he does everything right,” Rolovich said, adding Hughes is a leader on and off the field. “Probably if you looked at him, you would say he doesn’t belong on a D-1 football team. But his heart does. It’s hard to win football games. But it’s not hard to change somebody’s life. I’m glad we got everyone involved and we got that one done.”
Hughes said he probably will deposit his first scholarship into his bank account. He has paid for school and living expenses through loans and his work as a graphic artist. His art can be found on quarterback Dru Brown’s left arm.
“It hasn’t been easy, I’m not going to lie,” Hughes said of making ends meet. “(The scholarship is) absolutely incredible. It still hasn’t hit me.”
Go Hunter , congratullations
Congratulations to UH’s HH!
Yahooooooooo!!!
Congratulations Hunter!! Well deserved. Rolo at it again, what’s next…Hawaii 5-0?
Redshirt? Just practice uniform.
Oh a lot fans. KIF. You beat out all the KIF. You’re a failure Ross Kagawa. Kaua’i County Councilmen. pfff!
how easy would it be to have Hunter Hughes play for one (1) series of downs?
never know what will happen!
still recall #77, a DL, for UH years back who came from Wyoming — never played a down in all his 4 years here — believe his name is Dwayne Dexter — all 6′ 8″ and about 285#s.
Would love to see Hunter and other guys buried on the depth chart, get some in-game action during garbage time. Let’s hope for some huge UH leads in games this season to give them that chance.
Whoa, Sausage McMuffin, you just took a left turn. Practice uniforms? Ross Kagawa? No explanation?
Beautiful! Happy for Hunter, I hope he get’s onto the field in a game! As usual, nice touch by Rolo.
GO WARRIORS!!!
WWE show in the Blaisdell Arena? What is WWE?
World War Evah? I thought Christy Yamaguchi skated
last night. Also Women Dog Show. Anyhow, please explain when you use abbreviations.
Thanks.
Post #6, that’s what spring camp is for.
You don’t experiment with a 5th string QB durine season , especially conference time.
Yes, Dwayne Dexter from Pinedale, WY, out in the boonies, how did they ever find him in those days!
I remember a Ross Kagawa home run that was like a missle which sailed over left field.
Hardest hit ball I ever witnessed live hit by a UH player.
Ross Kagawa was good.
Guud Evening Tsaikos…Bootiful Evening!
and this is why I love the Warrior program…Rolo recruits quality young men. Hoping all team members are buying in on what is being accomplished here. Quality football with quality young men…
IMUA WARRIORS!

Hardest shots I seen by a UH baseball player go into two categories: farthest and sheer velocity.
For the farthest, and this is by a long shot (pun intended)–my boy Joey Meyer.
For just impacted power, the human soda machine from Waipahu–Greg Oniate (bruddha stood no higher than 5’6 or so and I think has over 2 dozen homers over his career–but its the sizzling line drives I most remember)
