Fine tuning

Spring training was going to be a learning process for the Warriors.

The Warriors have three returning starters for the resurrected run-and-shoot offense.

But quarterbacks Cole McDonald and Jeremy Moussa have impressed in spring training, wideout Devan Stubblefield appears to be back in top form, and slotback Cedric Byrd has created a buzz.

While the passing game has shown effort and development, the focus is now on strengthening the connections.

“You’ve got to tighten the nuts all the time,” Rolovich said of the fine-tuning. “Every day, a little bit. One more twist. Keep tightening up.”

Because I’m a card-carrying AARP member, people always want to talk to me about the days of yore: rotary phones, the friendship circle, “righteous summer” as a yearbook wish.

At Saturday’s spring practice, I met Ronald, and it was fascinating to learn of his “the way we were.”

Ronald has been a UH season-ticket holder for more than 45 years. He used to ride the bus from his Makiki home to watch the Rainbow Warriors play at the “Termite Palace.”

When Aloha Stadium opened, he made a seat request. But ticket manager Edith Tanida convinced Ronald to choose seats that were not smack in the middle of the student section. Back in the day, UH students had first-come, first-served sideline seats. And back in the pre-computerized days, Edith and Donna would discuss seating arrangements with customers.

Ronald now uses a cane, and it takes him a little bit longer to go from Point A to Point B, but he still attends every UH home game.

After Saturday’s practice, Rolovich, McDonald and linebacker Jahlani Tavai thanked Ronald for his loyalty and attendance.

    1st or 2
    Early bird

Ronald maybe didn’t see Nephi Hannemann, ” The Polynesian Man” entertainer who played in 1964 at UH at QB with hardly any pass protection at the termite palace, under Jimmy Asato. He passed away March 31.

Go Bows! Spring is a time for opportunity and possibility. As to the v-ball men getting hosed, now is a great time to review the argument of transitive property: Transitive Property of Equality. The following property: If a = b and b = c, then a = c. One of the equivalence properties of equality.
Or in local speak, ehhhh we beat team team a, and team a beat team b, brah, we better than team b.

I would love to see a good running qb in the run n shoot. Gives another headache to the defense. Colt and Moniz were pretty good scramblers except both of them had a run that didn’t end up too well.

  5. Idunnonuthing April 23, 2018 11:08 am

Edith Tanida, was a badass and got things done. I remember when I bought my season tickets for UH men’s basketball when the Stan Sheriff Center was brand new. She personally walked me to the section where my seats were and told me to sit in it before I make my final decision.

How Kala Timoteo doing during spring training? I haven’t heard his name mentioned

You are one of the faithful Granpa Ron! Thanks for facilitating so many positive experiences for your grandchildren over these past several years (and for your son in law too).

Looking forward to this season. When you told me last night at your birthday dinner how these student athletes had bypassed a beeline to the showers after a long practice to sit and talk story with you made me stoked for you and the future of the football program.

    Geev um Rainbows!

Like what I’m reading about the RnS falling into place. It appears that the defense is tough too. Gonna watch on Saturday and see what unfolds in the scrimmage.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

This is what I love about Nick. You got to give love to get love. He takes care of the fans, the oldtimers. Good for him.

  10. A-House April 23, 2018 12:39 pm

now I know why Nephi H unfamiliar name connected to UH football

i was already in basic training!!

  11. A-House April 23, 2018 12:43 pm

returned home in mid-September 1968 — read the morning paper and commented to my roommate — must be big HS football game

his response was, “no UH playing” — what??? 22,000 expected at termite palace?? max seats were 25,000 IIRC.

  12. bowwar April 23, 2018 2:28 pm

Whew! I had to count, but I’m 40 years as a season ticket holder…Prior to that, I attended UH games as a member of the UH Band. I was part of the UH Band that closed Termite Place and opened the new Aloha Stadium. Boy, how time flies…

  13. H-Man April 23, 2018 2:53 pm

You mean the 4:30 pm Saturday practice?

  14. KOH I NOR April 23, 2018 2:55 pm

How did they fare in 1976? 50,000 seats.

Too young yet. I never heard of KIF too then.

  15. Sangamon Keith April 23, 2018 4:43 pm

I remember seeing Nephi play in the Termite Palace … I was in my early teens and my dad took us to the games. Great to hear about the old guys. I collect old game programs and media guides … the oldest program from a Otto Klum era. It’s great when we think about a football tradition and the players & coaches who built that tradition. Glad to see invites going to the football alums … they should be honored and highlighted more to build our Warrior, aka Rainbows, aka Fighting Deans.

    Great Evening All!

    Coaching: Tightening nuts.

Good to hear comments from A-House, bowwar, Sangamon Keith and others about the good old, old and older days.
    Boiled peanuts were good.

bowwar, when are the going to promote Gwen from assistant band director ?

  18. Bowwar April 23, 2018 7:04 pm

Islandman: Isn’t Gwen an associate Band director? She came after my years with the band…

Yes, boiled peanuts & saimn were good at the old stadium.

  19. islandman April 23, 2018 7:13 pm

According to the UH staff directory, Gwen is Assistant Band Director and there is no Band Director, for many years now.
Enjoy the UH band, you and them are really good.

University of Hawaii is considered a 3rd world country to the sports world of the NCAA and its cohorts.

North Carolina student athletes have fake diplomas due to fake classes. No sanctions on the athletic department of North Carolina and teams involved.

UH basketball lends an i pad and gets thrown in the wash ultimately affecting the program to where it is today. Some may say the program was on a big upswing and would be much better than where it is today. Some will say not.

  21. burro sabio April 23, 2018 10:08 pm

#19 – Dr. Jeffrey Boeckman is the Director of Bands and Dr. Gabriel Arnold is the Associate Director of Bands according to the Music Department website. Gwen doesn’t have a PhD and that would probably prevent her from being Band Director.

  22. PONO April 24, 2018 5:56 am

What is the status of Kala?

  23. islandman April 24, 2018 7:16 am

    21. burrio, thanks, someone knows how to find info.
How many bands does UH have ?

  24. A-House April 24, 2018 8:27 am

UH bands have always impressed our family — going way back.

we were on the plane with the UH band for the 1992 Holiday Bowl — hooked up with Didi AhYou travel.

best band we ever witnessed was the Ohio State band supplemented by the alumnae members – their numbers covered the entire stadium surface – their continuous marching to form Ohio was most impressive

  25. A-House April 24, 2018 8:32 am

wow, August 2019 will be 50 years as a season ticket holder!

many, many memorable games at the termite palace before moving to Aloha Stadium in 1975.

  26. H-Man April 24, 2018 12:03 pm

Sometimes I feel the games at the old Termite Palace were more entertaining and fun. Had to find street parking. The concession food was great. The crowds enthusiastic and loud.

  27. burro sabio April 24, 2018 12:16 pm

#23 – Islandman, normally I only find things when my plow digs it up in the fields.

  28. Inyoface April 24, 2018 12:22 pm

Will the spring game be on Facebook? Come on, it’s free to broadcast! Just need some student interns to set up the cameras and production and maybe put in some interview’s at the end.

  29. islandman April 24, 2018 4:29 pm

Batoon will use a 4-2-5 defense

  30. UH4eva April 24, 2018 5:11 pm

ST nice story on Ronald. What dedication to the Warriors and UH. He is so connected to the program he should help lead ideas to attracting new fans. I remember those days in the 70s running to your unassigned seats in the student section when the gates opened. Later when I could afford it was Yellow section season tickets.

    20.

Whenever I see Jay Bilas on ESPN, I turn the station.

    ESPN protects the Tar Heels.

It could be that it’s their fallen comrade’s alma mater.

  32. burro sabio April 24, 2018 10:21 pm

Except that Jay Bilas played at Duke

  33. A-House April 25, 2018 7:01 am

    islandman:

4-2-5 defensive alignment means a “rover or nickel” who can protect against the run and pass

hope the DEs protect the “corners” otherwise large chunks of yardage if “rover/nickel” cannot make up space — reminds me of the game at Navy where UH crashed “inside” and allowed the QB to run the corners and score 6 TDs — believe this is still a Navy record!

over commitment by the 2 ILB will open space up the middle for run or pass

DC must be prepared to jump into a 4-3-4 or 3-4-4 alignment quickly — players must also be ready to jump into the game mentally prepared
