Live Football Blog: Hawaii vs. Boise State for Mountain West title

Boise State beats Hawaii, 31-10, to win the Mountain West title.

********

The Warriors can’t take advantage of Kai Kaneshiro’s interception.

On fourth-and-5, Cole McDonald is sacked. The Broncos take over, with 6:08 left and a 31-10 lead.

* * * * *

Miles Reed scores on a 21-yard run to cut UH’s deficit to 31-10 with 12 minutes to play.

Reed rushed for 59 yards during the eight-play, 75-yard drive.

* * * * *

The Broncos don’t waste any time — again — as Jaylon Henderson scores on a 5-yard run to increase the lead to 31-3 with 18 seconds left in the third quarter.

The drive was set up when nose tackle Sonatane Lui stripped the ball free from Cole McDonald.

The Broncos score two touchdowns in 49 seconds in the third quarter. They ended the second quarter with two touchdowns 53 seconds apart.

* * * * *

The Broncos extend their lead to 24-3 lead with 1:09 left in the third quarter.

On third-and-goal from the 4, the Broncos all moved to the right and Khalil Shakir, on a reverse, took the pitch and ran around the vacated left side for his second TD of the game.

* * * * *

The Warriors’ second drive of the second half ends with their first punt of the game.

The Warriors have been undone by five false starts.

* * * * *

The Warriors’ opening drive of the second half advances to the BSU 5.

But two dropped passes and a fourth-down pass that was wide of slotback Lincoln Victor ended the scoreless drive.

The Broncos still lead, 17-3, with 9:12 left in the third quarter.

* * * * *

The Broncos come right back and score on a 36-yard TD pass from Jaylon Henderson to John Hightower with 14 seconds left in the half.

Hightower soared for the catch, made a spin move, and raced into the end zone.

It’s 17-3 entering the intermission.

* * * * *

The Broncos take a 10-3 lead on Jaylon Henderson’s 36-yard scoring pass to Khalil Shakir with 1:07 left in the first half. The drive was preceded by Kekoa Nawahine’s interception of Cole McDonald in the end zone.

* * * * *

Kekoa Nawahine intercepts Cole McDonald’s 36-yard pass in the end zone, giving possession back to the Broncos with 3:44 left in the first half.

It’s still 3-3.

* * * * *

No harm, no foul.

UH forces a punt following its failed attempt at the BSU 1.

The Warriors will have the ball at their 30 with 5:10 left in the second quarter of a game tied at 3.

* * * * *

The Warriors appeared to take a 6-3 lead on Ryan Meskell’s apparent 21-yard field goal. But the Broncos were offsides, and head coach Nick Rolovich accepted the penalty, moving the ball to the 1. On fourth-and-goal, quarterback Cole McDonald’s keeper was inches short of the goal line. Nose tackle Sonatane Lui and Rile Whimpey combined on the stop.

* * * * *

It’s all tied at 3 after one quarter.

The Warriors face a second-and-1 from their 34 when play resumes.

* * * * *

Smart move by BSU marketing folks. They’re selling 2020 season tickets.

* * * * *

The Broncos’ 15-play drive ends with Eric Sachse’s 34-yard field goal with 30 seconds to play in the first quarter.

UH linebacker Jeremiah Pritchard was offsides on the play, but the Broncos declined the penalty, which would not have resulted in a first down. Never take points off the board, as the saying goes.

* * * * *

Hawaii takes a 3-0 lead on Ryan Meskell’s 47-yard field goal with 6:44 left in the first quarter.

The drive was kept alive on Cole McDonald’s two-yard pass to Cedric Byrd on fourth-and-1. An offsides penalty moved Meskell’s FG attempt from 52 yards to 47.

* * * * *

Hawaii holds. In four games, UH has forced three opening punts.

* * * * *

Boise State wins the toss and elects to receive the opening kickoff.

This is the fourth game in a row the Warriors will open on defense. In the past three games, UH has allowed one TD but forced two punts on the first drive.

* * * * * *

Unlike the usual intros, this time all the Boise State players carried a hammer while running onto the field.

* * * * *

Oh, the Warriors have won football titles before. But this is the first time in the program’s history the Warriors will be playing in a championship game.

The Warriors are zip-for-seven in games played at what is now known as Albertsons Stadium. But Boise Stat lost the last time it hosted a MW title game.

The Broncos are in all black. The Warriors are in white jerseys with black pants.

    Let’s go Bows!

  2. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2019 10:44 am

    Fifteen minutes until kickoff, and the crowd is sparse for a championship game.

  3. ai-eee-soos December 7, 2019 10:55 am

    GO WARRIORS !!!

    BEAT them DONKEYS !!!

  4. winning December 7, 2019 10:55 am

    Less noise less distractions. Hope they call a perfect game offensively. Only then will the OC start earning the salary!!

  5. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2019 10:59 am

    There used to be a track circling the field. They covered it with a blue turf. There’s just a lot of distance from the front-row fans and the UH sidelines.

  6. Harvey December 7, 2019 11:03 am

    Let’s go Warriors!

    (Lots of open seats away the stadium. Just saying….maybe it’s actually thing bigger than Aloha Stadium attendance).

  7. winning December 7, 2019 11:18 am

    what the heck was that handoff to Reed on 3rd and 9!!! COME ON!!!!!!!! REED IS NO ALVIN KAMARA for goodness sake !!

  8. winning December 7, 2019 11:26 am

    again, cannot stop the run. doesnt look good for now. UH gotta outscore em!

  9. H-Man December 7, 2019 11:55 am

    Off sides Boise St. Non-call by officiating. You think they’re partial? I do because that was an easy call.

  10. clyde December 7, 2019 11:57 am

    So the “offsides” nose tackle makes the initial hit on Cole. Looks like Warriors have to beat Boise plus an officiating crew with a MW mandate. But, I digress.

  11. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 12:02 pm

    Yes, that was an obvious missed call. Another bad call was taking the field goal off the board in a game like this.

  12. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 12:02 pm

    Chevan time, IMO.

  13. seewhy December 7, 2019 12:02 pm

    The officiating is clearly one sided. Just sickening.

  14. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 12:06 pm

    THAT IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH MCDONALD!!!! He does s__t like that! No way that ball should have been thrown with so many defenders there.

  15. sackkabooya December 7, 2019 12:12 pm

    Not enough pass rush. This QB is off. Will mess up with pressure.

  16. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 12:12 pm

    Both receivers down field covered, plus a roaming free safety in position to make a play on either and you float one. Smh.

  17. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 12:13 pm

    15 … agree

  18. H-Man December 7, 2019 12:24 pm

    Notice, Boise St does not make any mistakes. Cole, true to form, throws an INT. And now Boise St blowing it open with another quick passing TD. S**t.

  19. Inyoface December 7, 2019 12:24 pm

    We lost god game. Maybe next year.

  20. winning December 7, 2019 12:37 pm

    Mc dunno reverting back to his old self. could have run for 15-20 yds. throws into doubled coverage INTERCEPTION ! THEN 58 SECONDS LEFT THEY STUMBLE AROUND AND PUNTS? BOISE ST SCORES 14 PTS IN A MINUTE AND CHANGE. TAKE EM OUT ALREADY. NEVA LEARN YET. RIDICULOUS

  21. H-Man December 7, 2019 12:58 pm

    Is Cordeiro hurt?

  22. H-Man December 7, 2019 1:01 pm

    Argh…..Just flush the memory bank and start thinking about Wahine volleyball. No sense watching this game any longer.

  23. Islander Lee December 7, 2019 1:04 pm

    Not very good play calling. With 5 yards to go. why not run. You have 4 chances.

  24. CUQ December 7, 2019 1:17 pm

    You have to wonder why no QB change. No TDs, bad on third downs, throwing into coverage, inaccurate throws…

  25. Sad UH Fan December 7, 2019 1:21 pm

    lol at anyone who thinks mcdonald is gonna go to the league. he is an above average qb who can’t make the big plays when we need him to or play a complete game.

  26. Buffoman December 7, 2019 1:25 pm

    There is a definite level of difference between us and them. We are not “there” yet. Happy to be in the game but not at the same competitive level as the Boise State level teams. Hopefully in time we can begin that discussion.

  27. Andrew December 7, 2019 1:29 pm

    I thought they woulda made a QB change at half. Not because Cole was playing horribly but because to show a new look. Cole has been good off the bench so if Cordeiro wasn’t playing well, Cole coulda came off the bench

  28. Warrior Dave December 7, 2019 1:29 pm

    Why is Cole still in the game? Cordeiro should have been in at 17-3.

  29. Brutherman December 7, 2019 1:39 pm

    Honest question. Does anyone know if Chevan is still on the team? His ankle injury must be really bad.

  30. Islander Lee December 7, 2019 1:41 pm

    Cole is still a better choice on the road and I still think he’s playing ok.

  31. Andrew December 7, 2019 1:55 pm

    Maybe Cordeiro sick/not ready to play?

  32. clyde December 7, 2019 2:02 pm

    The injury that forced Chevan from the last game must be more serious than anyone outside of the team knew.

  33. azwarrior22 December 7, 2019 2:03 pm

    Why is Cole still in the game? Cole is not getting it done !

  34. cappie the $2000 dog December 7, 2019 2:03 pm

    besides the offsides, wasn’t sharsh held in the end zone on 3rd down?

  35. clyde December 7, 2019 2:11 pm

    I thought I knew a little bit about football, but why would Hawaii use its final timeout when the previous play was dead and the clocked stopped when Hawaii used its second timeout?

  36. seewhy December 7, 2019 2:41 pm

    Poor game management. That’s why.

  37. cappie the $2000 dog December 7, 2019 3:02 pm

    stansberry is putting himself on the radar on regional tv.

  38. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 3:05 pm

    The only explanation for Chevan not being put in has to be injury. There is no way Rolo would jot have made a switch if you follow how things have been going this season otherwise. Unless of course this was a give up game. It sure seemed that way.

    McDonald stank today.

    Willing to put money Rolo leaves. The game felt like “a screw you guys already.”

  39. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 3:06 pm

    Poor play. Lots of penalties. Just not a championship effort, that’s for sure.

    Defense kept them in it first half.

  40. winning December 7, 2019 4:52 pm

    This UH regime may be known as the team that cant win the big ones. And this game was a big one. Last chance in Hawaii Bowl. If they cant beat BYU they will be known as the PRETENDERS and changes gotta be made or recruit way better. Also, obvious offsides, should have been 4th and less than a half yard. Like I said last year we dont have the prime time QB and offensive play caller yet. To repeat, they better beat BYU or attendance will be less than 20,000 next year.

  41. justsomeguy December 7, 2019 5:47 pm

    Never in my life have I seen a more disloyal fanbase than Hawaii. Complain complain complain complain. Almost none of you have any respect for improvement the team has made this year. Any of you who thought we were going to walk in and hand it to Boise on their own field were simply delusional.

    Maybe support your team once in a while instead of whining like a bunch of children.

  42. MattyBoy December 7, 2019 5:56 pm

    #41,

    I completely agree. Whine, whine, and all show no go. Let’s see how they feel if Rolo decides to bolt. Fans are gonna be crying and wishing Rolo and staff had never left. Be careful. It’s actually a very real possibility that he may leave. Those in the know, know.

  43. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 6:02 pm

    Oh please. Sometimes gotta call it like it is.

    I can share my opinion because I do support the team. Cant help it if it comes out negative right after a loss.

    And my sentiment about Rolo leaving is because he is not supported by his bosses. Not that I want him gone.

  44. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 6:04 pm

    They should have played better today and were capable of beating Boise. It’s those that dont think they could have beat Boise that are the problem.

  45. cappie the $2000 dog December 7, 2019 6:37 pm

    college football news projects wyoming vs. byu and leaves hawaii completely out of the bowl picture. is that possible?

  46. justsomeguy December 7, 2019 6:46 pm

    Kev-1…

    You sound like a sour child throwing a tantrum cause you didn’t get everything your way.

    Today was a battle, and we made too many mistakes. But just like when we was kids, you take your lickens like a man, chin up and move on.

    Hawaii made vast improvements this year and I’m proud of our boys this year. If you just wanna run your mouth about everything you dislike, go somewhere else.

  47. Inyoface December 7, 2019 7:03 pm

    They could have beaten Boise, they weren’t supérior athletically.

  48. Inyoface December 7, 2019 7:11 pm

    It seemed like driving down the field wasn’t an issue but the goal line seemed to have a force field or something. Going for field goals in the first half would’ve gave UH 9 points which would’ve help tremendously,

  49. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 7:51 pm

    Justsomeguy … ummm, no thank you. I’ll wrote what I please. Thank you for your comment. It is appreciated.

  50. Kev-1 December 7, 2019 7:53 pm

    Oops … that should say “write” not wrote. But I’m sure you will correct that for me.

    I think you should probably read a bit more of what I have written in the past before you go calling me a sour child. But I’ll spare you the name calling.

  51. A-House December 7, 2019 8:41 pm

    what did I see that the ref did not — so many holding by BSU OL — just grabbing UH DL — no call, then why should holder not do it again, and again, and again???

    officiating guru — any one — please explain how 11 players not “set” twice in a game against UH??

    why was there no off-side call with UH at the 1 11/2 yard line to the end zone?? Masaboy says its because the center centered the ball — clearly movement across/into the ‘neutral zone’ — if there is encroachment across the line, is it not at automatic off-side call???

    UH OL had 7 or was it 8 movement penalties? did the mental aspect rear its ugly head???

    question of whether to attend the Hawaii Bowl if UH is invited

  52. Kawika December 7, 2019 10:21 pm

    Hats off to UH for a fine season. BTW, UH currently DOES NOT have players the caliber of Weaver, Haloni, Shakir, and Hightower. Doubtful the outcome would be different regardless of the Xs & Os drawn up or playing this or that player. Sad, but true. Need to recruit hard, as it goes without saying. Increasing the COA stipend would help, too.

  53. Inyoface December 7, 2019 11:53 pm

    #52 the refs were micro managing Hawaii’s offensive line for any little twitch or even non fouls were called fouls that’s why they missed Boise’s offsides.

  54. H-Man December 8, 2019 1:20 am

    Cappie, it’s possible, but not going to happen. ESPN created the Hawaii Bowl for Hawaii and are committed to UH if they’re bowl eligible.

  55. sackkabooya December 8, 2019 1:31 am

    I thought Cole was incredibly focused early in the game. Whole first half really. He had a nice rhythm and at one point I thought Rolovich should go the entire game with him and not platoon QB’s even though they produced only 3 points.

    The interception in the first half was the correct read and placed in the correct area. The FS pretended to double up coverage on the route headed toward the sideline. He then spun himself to the midfield where he knew Cole would (via correct read) throw and intercepted the pass. Designed coverage from film study. Kudos to Boise.

    As the game progressed the offensive line was not as effective as first half. Their rhythm was off. I think the crowd noise bothered them. The silent count needed more practice. As Cole felt this discomfort the old bad habits started to peek through. Kind of confirms that McDonald is more of system quarterback (right now) than we thought. He really needs the system to function certain way so he can make the right reads and the correct plays Hard for him to make a play on his own volition (right now) Kind of opposite of Corderio.

    Rolovich had to do a lot to keep him (Corderio) in the system early in the season. His instinct is to make a play. He did manage to mature as the reps increased. Displayed such a different skillset from Cole. Interesting contradiction looking ahead to next season. Going to be unreal (Offense AND Defense) next year. Just got to make sure Rolovich comes back. Awesome.

  56. Whats up December 8, 2019 6:44 am

    Hawaii was out matched on the road 2 times at Boise. The talent level Boise is recruiting is just a bit higher than what Rolo has recruited this season. Hawaii coaching did a good job and the players had some mental errors and jitters with execution and penalties.

    I didn’t think Hawaii would do very well at Boise, so maybe my expectations were already low. Now if this game was played in Las Vegas or Honolulu… I probably would have had higher expectations.

    But this season the Warrior Football Team exceeded my expectations… now they need to lick their wounds and regroup for the upcoming bowl game. Hawaii Football doesn’t need a Bowl game blowout like last season against Louisiana Tech !!!!

  57. Kawika December 8, 2019 7:50 am

    “Physical superiority cancels all theory.” Besides Curtis Weaver #99, UH’s O-line was manhandled by BSU’s D-line, especially #98 Sonatane Lui, along with the other front 7 players. Result was a number of movement penalties. Hard lesson learned, as UH has a young O-line and hopefully will get better from this experience.

    Especially worried now that UH may lose Rolo and his key assistants to other schools.

  58. clyde December 8, 2019 8:37 am

    Unfortunately, this is what you get when you hire a reporter from an Idaho newspaper to supplement your UH football coverage:

    “Quarterback Cole McDonald ran a keeper to the right, but the play went awry at the snap. Boise State senior nose tackle Sonatane Lui had figured out the Warriors’ snap system and timed that snap so well that he appeared offside to the naked eye. On replay, it looked like Lui might have been just barely onside.”

    Anyone here who watched the game and the subsequent replay agree with Chadd Cripe’s observation that Lui was “onside”? Just asking …

  59. Kawika December 8, 2019 8:49 am

    I wonder if Corey Batoon is on Lane Kiffin’s wish list for his new staff at Ole Miss? Batoon coached some 5 years at Ole Miss, knows the area, and was Kiffin’s Co-DC at FAU. Batoons is capable but has gotten the same criticism at Dave Aranda and look what happened.

    Why couldn’t UH just build something like FAU’s stadium on campus? Perhaps 36,000 seats with another 5000 in luxury suites. No bleacher seats there. Rent out the suites in the off-season for various functions on campus. Auwe!

    https://www.tutorperini.com/projects/sports/fau-stadium

  60. H-Man December 8, 2019 9:16 am

    Kawika. Your suggestion makes too much sense. But a UH campus stadium won’t happen. Our government leaders have seen to it.

    I’m not sure why on 2nd and one Cole throws a deep pass to the endzone to be picked off. Why not get the first down first? That turned the game around I thought.

  64. Inyoface December 8, 2019 11:01 am

    They have to go for 3’s against BYU on fourth.

  65. sackkabooya December 8, 2019 11:35 am

    I think this season Batoon went totally “vanilla” in his schemes. Plus the personnel packages seemed kind of random too. Introduction to what will be expanded upon and “fine tuned” later. Especially as Suianoa’s guys graduate and his players are inserted.

    Next season I expect to see some “specific” personnel packages as down and distance dictates. Also hope to see more pressure via blitz with Scott, Pavihi and Bethley. A base package using a 3 man front featuring Taala , Laulu, and an improved (like his hudl video) Vega. And hoping to see more (and urgent) development of pass rushers like Kahahawai-Welch (very quick first step), Ritner (very skinny still but awesome hudl), Blocker (can be the next Padello, disruptor) and even Choi (has a weird quickness to power ratio like Zeno but can play 2 pt stance, DNA).

    Imagine if Batoon can get the right JC fits. Going be unbelievable. Would supplement the transition of guys like Ritner, Blocker. Killins, Francisco, Bowers, and Peterson until they’re ready. One more year maybe. But defense Phase II will be unreal trip I think. Be ready.

  66. sackkabooya December 8, 2019 12:28 pm

    Somebody show Ritner videos of Falaniko and Al Noga. Can see how to infuse speed with physicality as a 250 pound 0 technique NT (Niko) and 260 pound 5 technique 3 pt stance 4-3 DT (Al, All-American 1987). Ritner is in that mold I think. Needs to see it to believe it.

    The question for both teams entering the Hawaii Bowl are:
    – who will be out with injuries
    – who are academically ineligible after fall finals
    – who will enter the transfer portal before the Winter Early Period December 18-20, 2019
    – Will anyone on either coach staff leave for a new job

    For Hawaii
    – Will Chevan be available to play if called upon

    I predict Cole will start, Chevan will finish
    POMAI
    Hawaii 45 – BYU 41

  73. Da Punchbowl Kid December 9, 2019 9:30 am

    This was a magical season. We all need to appreciate the huge strides made by players, coaches and staff. Let’s hope we can keep things rolling at the So-Fi Bowl and on through the spring and to next season. The powers that be need to find the means to pay Rolo and his staff what they deserve.

    As for Boise, hindsight is always genius, but my eyes saw the Boise D-Lineman jump off sides on that fourth and goal play. To quote Tsai’s report on the game:

    The self-styled “Froot Train” — 5-foot-11, 250-pound Dayton Furuta — was aligned in the backfield with McDonald. The plan was for Furuta and a lineman to reset the line of scrimmage, with McDonald following the path. But nose tackle Sonatane Lui appeared to lunge before the snap, canceling the intended gap.

    “The refs didn’t call it,” McDonald said. “Just had to run the play anyway. I couldn’t get to our double team because the guy jumped offsides. It put us in a bad position.”

    And while the Broncos were forced to punt on their ensuing drive, the lost scoring opportunity, Rolovich theorized, “was a big turning point.”

    There are reasons why Boise State claims the longest regular season home field winning record at 62. Again, we saw why they’re virtually unbeatable at home. Blue turf and questionable calls don’t help visiting teams, in this case, us. Still, the Warriors played liked they belonged. This fan is very happy for them and proud of what they’ve accomplished this season.

    See everybody on Christmas Eve at Halawa!!!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    ONLY if they qualify.

  77. NotNasti December 9, 2019 1:45 pm

    Re Cordeiro: I suspect Cordeiro was not available for the game. Rolo mentioned in his coach’s show that Cordeiro “was somewhat available, but there were some issues that came up, so we pulled him.”

  78. islandman December 9, 2019 3:48 pm

    70. cappie…. I was thinking they would have a chance vs Washington. UH Wbb has some good players but not always consistent. Nae is a really good ball handler, dead eye FT shooter, has 16 steals, 4 times the next four Wahine who have 4 each. Atwell is a great shooter and rebounder when she is on and has been in several games. Jadyn, good at getting to the basket and the ball, etc.

    78. islandman- i just checked washington’s rpi. idaho has a higher rpi. before the firewall went up, i checked the seattle times coverage of the game. the first word; inexplicable, and that’s as far as i got. hawaii’s win may have helped oregon state secure its lone first-place vote. i witnessed the wrong games live. since they have two wins against the power five, i’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, and blame their morbid losses on the 2:30 starting time. idaho has a rpi of 57!!! amy atwell had some amazing games last season. a year has passed, and i still don’t understand why rachel odumu hardly got on the court. best last “man” on the bench the hawaii women’s basketball program ever had.

  80. Kev-1 December 9, 2019 5:31 pm

    Why not host a conference championship game in a neutral site? Why should one team get a home advantage? I probably just don’t know, but how do other conferences do it?

  81. Maddog50 December 9, 2019 5:54 pm

    Had our chances and missed those chances. No losses just lessons. It will be interesting going forward what those lessons will be. A few plays separated us from them. They made. Them we did not. 9- 5 Division Champs…….. who would have thought that in early August! GoWarriors

  82. NorthShoreFan December 9, 2019 7:41 pm

    I do not begrudge Boise’s win. We were in it at the half. Things went south after that. HOWEVER, we weren’t in the championship picture at the start of the season. We weren’t supposed to beat Arizona, Oregon State, Washington and some others. Can anyone say our Warriors didn’t surprise anyone?
    These guys did heck of a lot to improve and persevere. Many starters got hurt and it was the next man up. The team stepped up!
    This team kept it going and it says a lot about our coaches and players on this team. This year the Warriors played as a team. No quit! Never gave up! What more can I ask for?
    IMUA Warriors! …. Time to go bowling!

  85. Inyoface December 10, 2019 2:16 pm

    Not going for the 3’s really hurt the team. Instead of 9 points in the first we had 3 and they had enough seconds to score a TD before the half.

  86. Inyoface December 10, 2019 2:18 pm

    Freddy H3 probably wanted to leave after no game time against Boise, we could’ve used him in the redzone.

  87. clyde December 10, 2019 2:49 pm

    86: I believe Holly entered the transfer portal a week or so ago. It’s possible he didn’t even make the trip to Boise. Rolo indicated on his radio show that they were hoping to sign two RBs for this class, a high schooler and a JC/transfer. We’ll see.

    Aloha fellow UH fan, as you know Nick Rolovich was named the Mountain West Conference’s Coach of the Year and other schools will be offering him more money to steal him away from us. Can we show our support for him by donating to the UH Foundation fund I created for UH recruiting–see below link. If 2,000 fans just donate $25, we will raise $50,000. So far, I got 1,038 donors ($25,950), so only 962 more donors to go!

    After donating, email your receipt to: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com.
    Mahalo, and pls share this with all of your fellow fans.

    Its been a few days since the loss, so I’ve had time to reflect on the game. And my view hasn’t changed – goal line execution was terrible and Cole’s missed passes in essential situations makes me looking for the backup.

    Cappie, the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, now in its 37th year, has become the premier D1 preseason Thanksgiving week tournament. It has simply outgrown DII Chaminade. I think ESPN was gracious to invite Chaminade in alternating years.

    https://www.staradvertiser.com/2019/11/24/hawaii-news/in-its-36th-year-the-maui-invitational-basketball-tournament-shows-no-sign-of-slowing-down/

    h-man: that is an accurate take. chaminade creates a lot of unwatchable mismatches. but then again, every once a blue moon, you get an upset. i wish i had a copy of the espnconversations thread of chaminade’s upset over texas in 2012. texas fans, so appalled. texas haters, so exhilarated.

  99. sackkabooya December 11, 2019 10:53 am

    When you look at the Mountain West there is so much potential to make some noise as an entire Conference. The American Athletic is the premiere Group of 5, but the long standing best Group of 5 team resides in the MWC. Boise. Consistent.

    The MWC went 4-3 vs Pac 12 this season. The four wins were close but the three losses were blowouts, one was bad (Oregon 77 Nevada 6). With two more chances during Bowl Season (Air Force vs Washington St; Boise St vs Washington) the MWC has a chance to demonstrate their overall potential to the Networks.

    That’s why I think it’s important for the MWC teams in bowls to compete hard and win this particular season. Got to catch up to the level of the AAC. These games are favorable so now is the time to make “noise” heading into next season.

    Utah St 44 (rpi) vs Kent St 79, SDSU 33 vs Central Michigan 78, Boise St 17 vs Washington 39, Hawaii 36 vs BYU 53, Air Force 24 vs Washington St 87, Wyoming 66 vs Georgia St 72, and Nevada 75 vs Ohio 96. All favorable RPI wise. Need to win. All of these if can. Important.

    Marcus Arroyo

    UNLV announced today that Oregon offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo will fill its head coaching vacancy, (first reported and confirmed by Mark Anderson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal). The 39-year old, Sacramento native will be the 12th head coach in UNLV Football history, and will lead the Rebels into the new Allegiant Stadium.

  101. ai-eee-soos December 11, 2019 3:29 pm

    Colorado State has hired former Temple and Boston College coach Steve Addazio to lead its football program.

  102. Kawika December 11, 2019 4:20 pm

    CSU fans not happy that their AD let Urban Meyer’s influence play a role in the hiring of Addazio (former Meyer assistant) recently fired from Boston College. BC players did not have flattering things to say about their former coach.

    Looks like Bryan Harsin is staying put at Boise State.

  103. ai-eee-soos December 11, 2019 4:48 pm

    # 100.

    Arroyo replaces Tony Sanchez, who was officially fired Nov. 25 and made $600,000 annually. Arroyo earned $825,000 with the Ducks, according to Oregon Live. UNLV does not owe Oregon a buyout.

    UNLV has not released the financial terms of Arroyo’s contract with the Rebels, but athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois has said the contract will be competitive compared to other Mountain West schools. That could put Arroyo in the $1 million range.

  106. Inyoface December 12, 2019 12:07 am

    Would like to see Hawaii use the green jerseys more. Would like see it in the bowl game but I believe we’ll be considered the visiting team which means white jerseys.

  107. Chicken Grease December 12, 2019 10:44 am

    No more retro’ uniforms. Pau already.

    Dunno why “fans” like UH football look stupid. It’s all this nancy boy and hello kitty girl from Hawaii mentality. “Oh we need rainbows! Unicorns! Cotton candy.” 🙄

    Polynesian “H” motif and tattoo black have more to do with Hawaii than rainbow. Ridiculous.

  108. Kev-1 December 12, 2019 12:31 pm

    Not sure why so many people hated the white on white unis with the white helmets from a couple seasons ago. It was a nice contrast to the all black unis. I personally like being able to mix up the different color uni and helmet combos. While our uniforms are nice now, there isn’t much creativity. All black or white and black. Das it.

    That’s another area JJ was good at. Marketing the look to appeal to different crowds. Just my opinion. I know some purists think it’s hogwash.

  110. SteveM December 12, 2019 1:10 pm

    RE: #107
    A bit of anecdotal trivia: There was always a misty rain coming from Manoa Valley and many rainbows would form over the area. As a UH student walking to classes in the 60’s I can attest that it often, “rained lightly enough not to need an umbrella but heavy enough to get you wet”.

    To me, the connection to UH football was at the old Honolulu Stadium (aka termite palace) when rainbows would form over the stadium from the Manoa mist. I attended many high school and UH football games there and often, esp. when we were losing, the rainbow seemed to inspire the team to last minute victory.

    Of course, it didn’t always work, but note the many afternoon photos of rainbows over Aloha stadium on the day of the crucial San Diego game this year.

    Before looking at the greener $$million$$ coaching salaries elsewhere, can UH afford such salaries given its current football revenue (which goes to also support most of the athletic department)?

    With only 20K average attendance at Aloha stadium and only a $2 million TV deal the Athletic department is in a $3 million hole every year.

    We probably have to get a lot bigger in many ways…

  115. Inyoface December 12, 2019 9:34 pm

    #107 I didn’t mean the retro jerseys they have a green jersey right now.

  116. Boolakanaka December 13, 2019 9:21 am

    Can’t imagine Aranda taking a 75 percent payout to a program that has almost no history.

    And if we can’t compete with New Mexico, a very poor state, that still had the gumption to pay the very mediocre Bob Davies close to 850k annually, I only have a very stern wassup to the UH administration ?!

    Got to get creative in trying to figure out how to raise money. As the Football Program gets more accomplished the possibilities to do so will open up. The attendance should pick up as well (albeit in small increments depending on win total) as full Phase II ensues. The “sky is the limit” for this Program (Whole Athletics Program really) especially as the Defense gets the proper personnel in upcoming recruiting. Unreal. Soon.

    I think the “foundation” for profitability is forming. When the new Stadium is finished it should make going to a UH Football game the “Event” like it used to be (for the 20 to 30 year old demographic). In the mean time load up on the incentives (for Rolovich and Staff) until the deficit starts to turn into profit. More body bag games (might not be so one sided soon), higher (Oahu only) PPV rate and a $200 student fee (with $150 of “coupon vouchers” to redeem for football food vendors maybe?) until the Stadium is finished. Then that (new Stadium) would reset the “Market” as you get a clearer view of what is possible. Set a proper salary. Soon.

    Later (soon) fix up the Athletics facilities (and other “student oriented” parts of campus) so the next coaching staff (if Rolovich is “swept away”) can continue in Phase III to IV without disruption. By then WVB and MBB will be profitable. Baseball will (maybe?) be top 5 to 10 in attendance (profitable). And enrollment can see an increase too (campus will be attractive) because of the feel of the “Ohana” culture (that permeates via Rolovich’s program) as it touches the entire University. Its all possible I think. But you need some vision. “Sky is the limit” for real. If you can see it.

  119. justsomeguy December 13, 2019 12:58 pm

    Boola, as always, we on the same page….

    Aranda and UNLV was an interesting mix. The Rebel’s have a whale of a donor in the Fertitta brothers. They are collectively worth over $4.5 billion and Tony Sanchez was instrumental in getting them involved at UNLV. Arroyo will have to take full advantage of their generosity as their budget is roughly in line with UH ($48m a year for the whole athletics dept) but that’s down over $10m since 2012.

    Without a real financial backer they seem destined for mediocrity. Aranda was a highly focused student of football and never appeared to be the type to cater to anyone and who would ever walk away from a $10 million dollar guaranteed contract to struggle for 5 years building a team….at LSU he gets the money, the freedom to design his system, and the recruiting budget to bring in athletes that can execute any scheme he prefers. Seems like a no brainer really.

    Fun fact: Lorenzo Fertitta’s son Nicco was recruited by UH in the era of he who must not be named. Nicco ended up going to Notre Dame after graduating from Bishop Gorman in LV, where he was teammates with the one and only Ikem Okeke, as well as other notable prospects Palaie Gaoteote (USC), Bubba Bolden (USC), Dorian Thompson-Robinson (UCLA), Kalen Hicks (UH for a time), and Tate Martell (Miami via Ohio St).

    when dave shoji retired, hawaii became a mid-major. hawaii wasn’t cinderella when the team would win national championships and go deep into the playoffs. they were gonzaga and butler in men’s basketball, de facto major. they’re cinderella now. getting into the sweet sixteen was a remarkable achievement and gives me hope that they have a shot at being gonzaga and butler(missouri valley years) in men’s basketball again.

    Excited to see the younger defensive guys get on the field if that is the actual plan. See what get so you can fill in the JC guys until the young guys are ready. Especially Peterson, Washington, Francisco (shake off the New Mexico game) Killins (if ready physically?) Bowers (physically too?), Ritner (?). and more Choi, Tavai, and Kaneshiro at FS. Just mixed in here and there so we can get a sense. But still gotta win this game though. If can.

    Same o blog headlines indicates thar Warriors football iz not having much success in moving foward with their game prep for the SO FI BOWL or with their recruiting. They had a very good past season but can’t take advantage of it in recruiting is nor a good sign for the future Warriors and their fans.

  129. sackkabooya December 15, 2019 9:11 am

    I think the less you hear about the recruiting process from the staff or recruits the better. Speculate all we want as far as us the fans but Rolovich and media need to keep quiet or risk poachers.

    I am very confident this recruiting session. Different feeling than past years at this time. I think Rolo can take a little more risk on JC guys as his youngsters (Batoon’s actually) mature. Rolovich and his staff seem to have figured out this “succession” process in position groups pretty good. You can see the depth form. Just need to level up the defense more this year. Big part of the Phase process going forward.

    Already got some good HS guys who committed early. And with the new urgency at RB Rolo has an opportunity to get the correct fit for RPO. Got some young talent ready to build around in Taala, Laulu, Scott, Kaneshiro, Muasau and Kahahawai-Welch. Two or three JC “fits” can turn this D around for sure with Davis leading the way. Awesome now. Going to be unreal soon. You can see it.
