Hawaii football training camp: Day 2

Freshman quarterback Zach Daniel slung a pass on Friday.

For the second day of training camp, the Warriors again ran a double huddle. This time, the experienced quarterbacks — Cole McDonald, Chevan Cordeiro and Justin Uahinui — were grouped together. Kamali‘i Akina, a transfer from College of San Mateo, and freshmen Boone Abbott and Zach Daniel were in the second group.

It was a good strategy. McDonald, Cordeiro and Uahinui are far enough ahead they can focus on their timing and getting prepared for the season.

The younger quarterbacks can benefit from a more instructional environment without the pressure of being measured against the veterans.

In the way-way-way-too-early category, it seems there’s something about slotback Lincoln Victor that reminds me of John Ursua. Not the polished Ursua of the previous two seasons, but the raw energy and talent he displayed when he returned from a mission.

Today’s picks: Justice Augafa, who made the move from running back to safety, made an acrobatic interception. Nickelback Eugene Ford also had a pick-6.

I am expecting that the Special Teams units will be very proficient and show capabilities to dominate at certain points this season. A lot of players returning at key spots. Lots of them. Kick returning, punters, kickers, and coverage guys. Now just hoping to see some “rugby” style incorporated to further “mess up” opponents.

Aufaga gave fans some flashes of excitement with his fearless style. Was often one broken tackle away from something “big”. Phillips averaged 33 yards per return in JC last season and Stovall looks to have that “big play” capability as well. Hope to see some Miles Reed too on kickoff return occasionally. Jump cutter.

To me Okeke was more valuable as “gunner” than as safety last season. Was outstanding. But it was Paul Scott who was special teams POY. Add in Bethley (good lane discipline), Wilson (good special teams mentality; he’s crazy) and Cortez Davis (he’s FAST) should be real good covering kicks. Plus hoping Grey Ihu can be the incarnation Mike Akiu bothering punters.

Gaudion was good last season but has the build (6’3″ 210; ‘seesh’) and athleticism to do more and have a “breakout” 2019. Get on the NFL radar. Meskell was quietly pretty efficient, although you might tend to recall his misses more than his high accuracy rate. Rolo did bring in two guys with real deep kicking capabilities so should be interesting. Elevate the competition. Awesome now. Take over some games via special teams play. Can do for sure.

“But Rogers does not appear to give a fig about Newton.” A line only Stephen could come up with. LOL

If you want to watch Seahawks training camp, a link with the schedule is below. Started today at 7 am HT and was about 1 hour. Only saw the last part but they showed the many receivers in action, maybe 12 think i saw #15 Ursua. Can get mixed up with #16.

Recruiting. Looks like we lost one over the weekend. Safety Lincoln Tuioti-Mariner committed to Air Force. Shucks. I really thought he would commit to Hawaii.
