Goin’ to Surf City
C’mon, you knew it was bound to happen.
Kody Afusia, a sharp and versatile player during his UH days, is now the offensive line coach at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif. The school is in the same “Surf City” neighborhood where Afusia was reared.
The Rustlers contacted Afusia about being a “technician guy” for the line. When Afusia indicated it was iffy on returning to the contracting Arena Football League, the Rustlers offered the O-line job.
The Rustlers run a spread offense with zone-blocking concepts.
“I’m in a meeting room talking football,” Afusia said of the best part of the job.
Afusia’s coaching style is expected to be direct and informational — and mostly PG-rated.
“I’m not going to be out there MF-ing dudes,” Afusia said, adding, “I have somebody to do that for me.”
First and congratulations!
Hope everyone’s year is off to a great start.
ST:
OK, how soon will you be posting an article about who the new coach hires are?
i supposed the coaching “hiring process” can be equated to doing business in Hawaii and having to deal with “unions” which were a good thing from the late 30s and well into the 80s; yet, many changes have occurred in the work place since and their focus, IMHO, should be benefits, not wages — increased medical/dental/vision/drugs benefits which can be very expensive for all of us.
being a Personnel and Industrial major at UH — I was told apply for a union job — by then, I was tainted by the union practices and decided to join the Army.
hello and Happy New Year to all Tsaikos living on the mainland and abroad!!!
be safe, healthy, and happy!!!
Goody for Cody, but isn’t housing expensive too in Huntington Beach?
Mr. Tsai, Mr. A-House is going to be camped out outside your front door awaiting news 😉 .
#5,
Golden West College is located about 7 miles north of the Pier…….near the 405……so not in the “high rent” beach district.
McKenzie accomplished way more this season than Tua did! He started a whole season and had stats that were off the charts. Not only that but defenses could study Milton and he still beat them.
The difference is Tua did it on the biggest stage. Should Milton and UCF have gotten the chance to compete in an eight team playoff? I think they did deserve the chance but we will never know if Milton would have performed like that on that big of stage.
Great Morning All.
Which defenses?
FIU
Tech
Maryland
Memphis x 2
Cincy
E. Carolina
Navy
Austin Peay
SMU
UConn
Temple
So Fla
Inyoface celebrate both bruddahs from 808 and be happy.
Howzit tsaiko’s and tsaikette’s long time. Blessing to your ohana and supa 2018.
I’m with Gilbert who dem coaches!!!!!
Congratulations Mr. Afusia
burro:
nah, I go by about 3:30 am Mo, Tu, Th, and Fri and no activity in the Tsai household
exception is February LOI day — December one he fooled all of us by being at UH like 2:15 am to record the 1st LOI and all that followed
speaking of my good neighbor – keep wondering when he writes his stories and when submitted to the paper for printing — his statement of playing notifying the Star-Advertiser equates to player calling him?
why so many times to “verify” that I am not a robot???
Congrats Kody!
I not bot!
Mr. A-House, I only know one 3:30 and it’s of the p.m. version. 😉
I am certified as not being a robot
#14:
for my #11 — it took me through 3 verification of pictures before the “machine” certified me as I am not a robot!!!!!!
3xs! — my comments/words must strike a ‘nerve’ in the computer program to force me to work so hard — hey, hey, hey — Fat Albert is on the move!
bright sunny day on the “lee-side” of Oahu
dark, angry clouds are starting to form on windward side of Manoa Valley
must be really sad when I post these remarks — nothing else to do for now!
as an OL coach for a JC team, the OL coach has assistants to do the menial work teaching players the fundamental “technical” parts of being an OL man?
must be nice to sit back and relax!
someday me too will sit back and relax — ha, ha, keep dreaming old man!
here’s to success for the UH men’s VB team as they prepare for their next tournament in Tennessee
watch out for dem “blue grass” maidens who will attempt to sweep you away
I really enjoyed my 2 years at Ft Knox listening to and watching all the country/western musical TV programs
A-House, what kine activity you expecting at 3:30am in the neighborhood? Haha an ancient Chinese fellow Pee Ping Tom got locked up for getting caught too often 😂
Anyway fill us in on any scoops on the new coaching staff
Does that mean he’s marrying a women from Hunnington Beach? Beach blonde.
Take your time. Then press the square block. Otherwise, you’ll be rewriting the sentences again.
No news on da coaching hires why does it take so long?
#22….maybe Rolo is not going to announce the hiring until that coach is on campus. Some other schools may try to steal the coach away ala Zak Hill to Boise State.
Oregon State probably waiting in the wing ready to offer any coach UH get. They no like do the hard work in finding coaches….they just lurk around then raid other team’s staff.
Still vetting, no rush. Notre Dame hasn’t named an OL coach yet.
#24 islandman,
What is there a chance Cav goes there?
I wouldn’t mind Rolo announcing Uncle Joe already though. (hoping)
Oh and still get Arizona that still doesn’t have a head coach.
I think Oregon State finished filling the staff already so no need worry there.
Back to reality and the job at hand. When do off-season conditioning drills begin for UH?
Heard that non-profits that have employees earning over $1M, will be levied a 21% excise tax. Not sure whether or not that pertains to government institutions.

Still vetting, no rush. Notre Dame hasn’t named an OL coach yet.
What do you mean by no rush?
Notre Dame’s Oline coach left on Jan 10th, a day before your post.
FYI
Chris Naeole (Oline coach) quit on Oct 6th
Legi (Dline) & Kafenses (WR) quit on Dec 18th
Thats some really long vetting process to hire new position coaches.
It’s not like Cav is the only available Oline coach out there.
Maybe we might still have chance to land DT Baraka Beckett if we named a Dline coach before Feb LOI day.
But it’s looking slim as he’s tripping UCLA this weekend

BigWave96744:
symbolism — what a great day on Oahu now — nearly cloudless sky with tons of blue sky and mucho sunlight to heat up our heater to “bocha” and PV system to increase our electrical storage!
could this relate to how well the 2nd half of UH football recruiting will be????????
jm: still believe 6’10” Grasman and 6’9″ Rado can help the football team — no get mad!!!!!
burro & BigWave:
U guys will probably be one of the first to know who the new coaches will be
Cav would be an excellent choice if Rolo uses the “spread/RnS” offense more than the West Coast type offense — no other UH OL coach ran the sidelines like he did!!
OC and DC are the masterminds on strategy and position coaches are the ‘technicians” to execute plays and players must trust/believe play calling
must wonder how Custer’s troopers felt when he decided to divide his command into 3 separate groups and diluted their effectiveness which led to their massacre — poor intelligence played a major factor in this disaster as Custer did not know the strength of the Sioux nation — always decided NOT to attend any game at Wyoming, but this may change if we want to see Mt Rushmore and the Lakota nation visitor sites
I’m shocked he’s hiring a WR coach instead of a QB coach, not unless he’s moving Stutz1 to OC and Brian Smith to RB (because ST mentioned he’s hiring an OL and WR coach)
Rolo has had Dru for 2 years and didn’t improve a bit. In fact in 2 years, no QB got better.
June could be HC and OC since he had Dan Morrison coaching the QBs.
Rolo is still too young of a HC to be HC/OC/QB
We have 2 gems coming out of HS at the QB position. Hate to see their talent not being coached up, like how Aaron Zwalen wasn’t coached up and left in the hands of GA
Arizona is negotiating with Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo
BTW Arizona fired their coach 10 days ago and if Kenny takes the position, he could be named today.
Here in Hawaii the vetting process would have just begun and a coach probaby hire weeks from now.
I know be patient we will get a full coaching staff by the summer
BigWave, I believe that Rolo wants to be a well-rounded coach. JJ never seemed to give a rip about his defense and left the DC to his own devices. It was ok when he had guys like Glanville and Mac but didn’t work with Miano/Lumpkin.
Mr. A-House, I’m still not a robot haha!
kinda early, but looking forward to the Army game at West Point [ 9/15/18 ] — they had a terrific 2017, but will lose their QB and the key to the wishbone attack — back up as good?? — will be good to see the “Long Grey Line” again — rumor has it that more than one “brigade” will be marching — 5 years ago they use 3 brigades because they were facing Hawaii!!! quite an honor as cadets said only one brigade is used for each home game — very impressive!!
at least UH will see Navy on 9/1 so it will help the defense a little
will UH start the 2018 season early or is the Navy game it?
burro:
did you or anyone hear why we needed the “I am not a robot” designation for this blog? does this hold true for the other blogs?
besides the lousy games in 2018 — could this have been a factor on the fewer number of posts?
ha — getting ahead in my ——— last post should have said 2017; not 2018 which is yet to come and i do hope this is not what will happen
appears the “guru” at the Star-Advertiser read my #40 as it took me 3 times before I got a “pass” to I am not a Robot.
Hiring can be fast at UH . Rolo was
hired quite fast after Norm was released . Also Ganot .
The new DC seemed to be hired pretty quickly too. Also the LB coach.
Mr. A-House you might recall that a not-so-nice person was spamming the blog with some super long posts some time back. It might have been due to that or just something to prevent robots from hijacking a blog. When you finally “ambush” your neighbor you could ask him that too ;).
after one try, I’m not a robot
If Kenny goes to AZ, look to Brian Derby to be hired. Rolo have we reached out?
A-House: Re:Robots:
It could be worse. Many websites reauire you to copy some undecipherable letters and numbers that are jumbled together. Many times, I look at those things and cannot make them out. So I guess and try 4 or 5 times and then give up. At least with this blog you just click the box. However I have noticed that sometimes my comment isn’t shown for some reason, even though it was for some innoccuous comment such as a congratulatory note.
BigWave #35 – Tom-Warrior-Nation on his Facebook group posted that he know’s an insider who reported that it is probable that Stutz will move to WR coach. Smith will continue to coach the RB. No mention if Smith will be re-assigned from his OC duties. He sucked! Apparently, from what ST posted, his selections have been made. Sounds like it’s an administrative thing that’s preventing them from announcing.
Also, when their backs are against the wall, UH has made some quick hires. Gib Arnold was hired 10 days after Nash was fired. They hired Mack a week after JJ left. They hired Norm in 13 days. They hired Ganot in about 7 days after Matlin was given the task to do so. Because coaches come under the umbrella of a union (HGEA), there are procedures, one of which says that the vacancy needs to be posted for 10 business days before interviews can take place. When head coaches are let go or leave after the season is over (like was the case with most of them), UH usually asks for an exception to get that posting time down to five business days. Other state universities like Arizona, UCLA, etc. may not have those same restrictions, which is why they can hire a new coach in two or three days. There probably isn’t the same urgency for the assistants, so they probably can’t get the exception down to five days. Just my guess.
me getting all confused
is not Banker the Assoc HC and LB coach?
is the DC also the DL coach or DL position still open?
like Great Balls of Fire — it’s rattling my brain
but, like Alfred E Newman said, “what, me worry”?
