Game day: UMass
HADLEY, Mass. — Today’s most interesting sporting event that doesn’t involved a UFC fighter or “Money” is set to kick off the Warriors’ 2017 season.
There are key returnees for UH on both sides of the ball — notably QB Dru Brown, RB Diocemy Saint Juste, LT Dejon Allen, TE Metuisela ‘Unga, MLB Jahlani Tavai, and FS Trayvon Henderson. But after a purposeful offseason and preseason, there is a different feel to these Warriors. Not only is there maturity to the players, but it also appears the coaching staff has grown. The Warriors lost last year’s DC, Kevin Lempa, but retained his protege, LB coach Sean Duggan. Promoting Legi Suiaunoa to DC was a seamless transition.
Maybe all of that translates into improvement for this game, maybe not. UMass also appears to have made strong gains in the nine months since both teams closed the 2016 regular season with UH’s 46-40 victory.
But it should make for an intriguing opener.
The oddsmakers favor UMass, but I’m thinking UH wins this one.
Imma ready….
Lets see what we got!!!!! Good luck boys, play hard and represent!
For those who are not in Hawaii, umass.com is streaming the game for free

I know Hawaii vs UMass football will be a lot more exciting than that other event of “Money vs Notorious.”
I will be watching the game at home at 12 noon. It’s less than 6 hours away. Game day is here!!!!
Gameday is finally here! Go Warriors!!!

Colorado State offense is looking good against Oregon State. CS just scored, and OSU replies with a 1 play touchdown. The Sept 30 Colorado State game at Aloha Stadium should be exciting. But for now … Go Warriors! Beat UMass!

Good day from San Antonio, TX.
Please keep TX in your prayers.
For now Harvey will not stop me from watching our boys season opener.
Warriors win 41-27.
Go Warriors!!!
Oneseason, thanks for mentioning CSU game. I’ve tuned in and watching 2nd half now. CSU has good passing offense. Hawaii secondary will be challenged.
And the Warriors performed their first ha‘a of the season.
It’s a lovely day in Amherst.

🙂 🙂 🙂 Go Warriors
UMass wins the toss, defers choice to second half, and will kick off to Keelan Ewaliko.
Terrence Sayles also is back there. UH going with double returners.
Anyone else having problems viewing the stream?
TOUCHDOWN!!
Wow, Dru ran it in for the TD. That really adds another dimension that UMass has to defend. Warrior offense looking in sync.
Offense looks very sharp so far!
Thank god we can watch the games this year!
Nice run by Brown. Great decision.
Dejon looks like a man amongst boys
keliandkawika #3 thank you for the UMass tv link.
But it is about three plays behind Bobby Curran
so am listening to both broadcasts on each ear.
Aside from the 1 sack, the O line looks good in pass protection.
Arrgghhh. Penalties, penalties. penalties. Fred threw a punch. I will be disappointed if the coaches don’t make a change.
I would have expected better from a Rolo coached team. Undisciplined, selfish play from the O-line! Are they trying to set a pace to lead the country in penalty yards? Come on Naole, get control of your players please!
What’s up with the Oline scrapping so much?
Okay, Matt Norman replace Fred. And then Chris Posa gets ejected for throwing a punch!!!! Where is the discipline that Rolo always talks about?
Tell O-Line that the Mayweather vs McGregor fight is later today. Maybe if they blocked better instead of fighting they could have picked up 1 yard to keep the drive going.
Too many penalties and turn overs UH –but….Ursua 85 yards!! The glass is only half full I guess..woohoo!!
Poor Hawaii not playing well against a not very good UMass team. Poor sportsmanship is hurting us like last year. We will beat UMass but it will be tough against UCLA, BYU and the Mountain West teams.
Well, UH wins 1st half in penalties 8 to 3 for UMass. Most disturbing is that key penalties killed UH drives and last one extended UMas for the last second score. Thought we were beyond the poor discipline days of Mac and Chow!
Coach; please calm these players down.
This team is hard to watch but, it nothing compared to the Mayweather fight. Can u say Ali vs Giant Baba?
Well, that was an ugly first half.
Too many penalties. Too many mistakes.
Hello from San Antonio, Tx. Weather here is a little wet and windy today. I expected Hawaii to have some first game jitters but this is ridiculous. This team needs discipline, those penalties are insanely bad. Rolo needs to clean this mess up or UMass is going to upset Hawaii.
#43
Or Hawaii will upset Hawaii.
Praying for the team to come up with a better showing in the 2nd half! Rolo, I hope you had a chance to slap the heads of some buggahs who nevah show class and the back of the braddahs that were honorable! Go Warriors!! Get chance we still 0 -0 😊
Offense needs to step up and defense needs to buckle down.
At least for the 1st quarter, Colt’s uncle is doing well with SJSU @ home leading heavily favored & 19th ranked USF. Spartans look good so far on both the D & O line. Might be a long season for the Warriors in conference.
Great Afternoon All!
GO BOWS!
Red Zone is on.
Das it
I love a turn over Recovered by our D 🙂
Deuce … 28 – 28
Wonder how we would have done at UMass if our O-Line was intact instead of being penalized or tossed out of the game.
Dru Brown! Dru Brown !! Dru Brown !!!
I know it’s been said that it ain’t over till the fat lady sings but I’m feeling pretty good right now!
38-35
I knew it’d be close, but thought the defense would’ve made it a closer game. Happy for the win Warriors!
How ’bout them Bows!?
Phew, I was holding….. !!! An opening game win on the road !!!
Did you see the first UH player that the UMASS QB shook hand of? Manoa!!!!! That’s right you come over and shake the hand of MANOA all football opponents!!!!
SETS THE TONE FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON!!!!!
That was the most asinine two-minute drill I’ve ever seen.
That’s my jaw on the floor when they ran the ball.
All O.K. over there? We are praying for Texas all over the nation here. Win or lose, main thing is you guys are safe!!!
But HAWAII WINS ANYWAY!!!!! 🤗
Four of you predicted accurately UH score: 38…
but I declare bg da winner 🙂
38 27 ML Warrior
38 24 Da Menehune
38 28 H-Man
38 34 bg
couldn’t get TV or streaming but it was thrilling on Gametracker. Way to go Bows
UH offense scored 17 points in the 4th quarter…
That is excellent.
And the defense held UMass to 7 points in that quarter.
Good job, Warriors. Proud of you.
Whew… my guess didn’t bachi the game if the first half don’t count.
But I had fate–after all, this is probably the first time ST ever openly predicted a UH in his blog. I don’t recall him ever calling one. ST is usually always accurate.
5,500 miles traveled. First game. First win. Time ran out for the Minutemen!
GO WARRIORS!!!
Prayers for the Lone Star State.
Congrats BG!
Congrats Rolo and Team!
Safe journey home!
RE: #58
Wow– bg was only 1 point off!
Congrats bg!
Nice final TO called by the UH coaching staff. The Eleven/UMass TV announcers complemented the call.
Congrats Warriors!! Hard fought win on the other side of the continent. Enjoy the flight back home! Alway better when you win.
U Mass TE will likely be playing on Sundays.
Got a feeling that Coaches Rolo & Naeole are not happy with some things (penalties) and that some players will be rolling on the turf come next week.
Glad Hawaii got that Ugly win, Rolo and his staff will have 5000 mile flight back home to correct the Ugliness the boys displayed in this game. But playing ugly like that against UCLA and MWC teams will cause Hawaii a lot more Losses than Wins.
Dunno what the coaches said at half time, but props to them with 2nd half penalties virtually non-existent! Those two replacement O-Line guys did great! Don’t see the two doghouse “P” boy fighters returning anytime soon. Dedication to team, discipline and just hard nosed football of those two that stepped up trumps physical talent anytime!
Lastly #5 is a Beast and #7 has Sunday type talent!
First game. A lot of rust and new personnel to go along with new schemes.
We shouldn’t expect anything less.
Any win is never ugly, it’s a win.
The heart of the team is there.
Looking forward to each game.
What a game! What a game! What a game!
🏈😳🙈😅Way to battle back Warriors!!!
Without a doubt, John Ursua was just electrifying. Many times he was so open that you had to wonder where the defensive back was. What a player!
Neil Everett on top ten plays talking Hawaii! Game winning play was number 10…
I bet Neil reads this blog as well…
It can be said the same for UMass’ TE #81 Breneman who caught 9 passes for 179 yds. Seems he was running free in an open meadow often and made you wonder where the DBs were. He will play on Sundays.
Their head coach said that Ursua looked like Jerry Rice.
Tsai better than the oddsmakers.
This game better than Mayweather/MacGregor.
Hawaii road warrior rainbow fans all abuzz this morning at breakfast following a great win. Dru Brown, cool in the clutch. Unga and Ursua big time weapons.
Who cares what UMass players will “play on Sundays”? The heck you guys concerned about them already? By the time they play in the NFL (or not), you’re only going to be concerned with whether they play for your team or not. Or just become another Caperkneel (were you concerned whether he played on Sundays or not back then? Now look at him).
Be darn year 3070 by the time UH play the Minutemen again anyway.
Support your UH Warrior players!!!!!!!!
When was the last time UH had players lead the country in Passing Yards, Receiving Yards, and Sacks…. Lol, yes it is Week Zero but still nice to see Hawaii Players with their names up there….

ST & Warrior Blog Dogs:
Watched game with friends and we held on till the end. Nice victory to start the season. It was a happy Saturday afternoon to be sure.
Go Warriors!
Ursua was representing Halawa (by proxy) big-time yesterday. He could have easily gone north of 300 if not for a couple of penalties. Cheeeehoooo Larrio (his pops) !!!!!!
#75 of course I read this blog. No better place to get Warrior news!
When Ursua signed his LOI a few years ago, I checked his videos and thought, “Wow, his future might be in basketball not football.” Now, I think he’s on the right path. Such a fluid athlete; awesome performance.
FYI: For those who care, Michelle Wie withdrew from a tournament in Canada to undergo emergency appendectomy.
UMass website has a replay of the game. The 3 videos that include a wrong date (“AUGUST 26 / FOOTBALL; FB Highlights VS. Hawaii [8/21/2017]”) are the ones you want; thanks couz808 @ Sports Hawaii. http://www.umassathletics.com/watch/?Archive=5519&type=Archive
What was the Oline lineup in the second half?
Blog host Tsai is on his way back to an islands, we can suppose.
Any Warrior who didn’t get ejected. 😜 🏉
I attended the game in Amherst last night with kids and wife…few things standout to me. 1) it was an exciting game that could have gone very differently, but the Warriors persevered 2) tons of penalties, especially against Sr or upperclassmen as usual which needs to change 3) Ursua is a stud…reminds me of a C Owens without top end speed 4) the DL was not able to apply pressure and outside contain needs to be fixed 5) UMASS’ TE was wide open too often 6) there’s a bunch of high character players – many were thanking fans and jovial to my kids and otger fans who were excited to shake hands with them 7) starting with a win puts wimd in the players sails 8) the FR LB from Samoa made plays on special teams by blowimg ppl up and will be a stud
9) Tvai is a monster in the middle, Muataitia hits like a hammer and Moala pushes 300 lb linemem around effortlessly. Can’t wait to see them develop
Ehhhh?!?! Are you wit’ da press?
It looks especially ingrateful when the Wahine took time to get lei from “the aunties.” They or Coach Ah Mow (indeed, WHILE the Wahine were getting their lei) could’ve given Ms. Luis a quote or two in 3-5 mins.
Thank you.
Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
BG…missed the extra point?….lol…Great prediction!
Some discipline problems…coverage …ehhh…timing…..all fixable
Ryan…keep doing the…Brick, Brick, Brick…it worked! If he no fumble then…?
Going to be a really exciting season.
Stuck in Pearl City freeway jam, listening to the game kept the jam endurable.
IMUA WARRIORS!
Looks like Marcus Kemp is making a good impression in KC camp:
“Kemp, a rookie UDFA, had a few nice plays Friday night
The biggest hit for the Kansas City Chiefs Friday night against the Seattle Seahawks came on the kickoff coverage unit, and it was delivered from a guy who isn’t even used to playing special teams. “
92.
It would be really cool if you named yourself after the Akira Kurosawa film.
I am waiting for Criterion to release it on Blu-Ray. The DVD has been out of print for some time.
I didn’t realize Kemp was doing well. I just look at the receiving stats.
Winning a game on the road is not easy….no matter who the opponent is. We in different elements and unfamiliar territory. Most team win ugly on the road so this win, to me, is a good win. No complaints from me.
Of course, there are mistakes that need to be addressed but to win despite all the mistakes is encouraging.
