Gameday: Western Michigan
The Hawaii basketball team will go for a 2-0 start to the season in about 20 minutes against Western Michigan on Day 2 of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic.
This figures to be an improved opponent from an overmatched Tennessee State squad on Day 1. The Broncos looked balanced and disciplined in their 70-64 nightcap win over New Mexico State on Friday.
One player who played pretty well I didn’t mention much in my main TSU game recap was senior center Davis Rozitis. He had nine points, nine rebounds, a block and shot 3-for-3. He was generally energetic and effective during his court time, especially when he led a fast break himself leading to an Aaron Valdes dunk.
Here’s something to keep in mind tonight: WMU’s best player, center Shayne Whittington, will miss his second straight game to start the season because of an NCAA suspension. Whittington participated in an exhibition three years ago and ended up redshirting the year. … And now he’s being penalized. Go figure.
The Broncos got by without him against New Mexico State. Regardless, it’s still a pretty big break for the ‘Bows. We’ll see if they can capitalize.

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team got thumped 84-44 in their season opener at Arizona State today.
My quick write-up is here. Check tomorrow’s paper for some choice comments from coach Laura Beeman on her team’s overall effort; it was definitely not the start she wanted coming off all their progress last year.
