Former UH QB enjoys coaching job

By Stephen Tsai on July 5, 2017

One of the nicest guys — former UH quarterback Taylor Graham — is doing well as the newly promoted quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator at Wheaton College. Graham was the Thunder’s receivers coach last year. Wheaton is a Division III school located 28 miles from Chicago. Graham, whose father played in the NFL, was raised in Wheaton. Graham still follows and roots for the Warriors.

Fourth of July

By Stephen Tsai on July 4, 2017

Happy Fourth of July. We spent the morning under a very hot sun watching Hawaii’s best parade — the Kailua Fourth of July Parade. And since it’s a holiday and I’m on vacation, here are the pics from the parade: OK, now step away from your computer and get outta the house. Enjoy the day. Happy Fourth, everybody.

Thoughts and prayers for injured Warrior

By Stephen Tsai on July 3, 2017

The first thing to notice is the long hair. The next thing is the fighting spirit. Defensive tackle Kalepo Naotala signed with the Warriors on Feb. 3, 2016, but delayed enrolling until January to fully recover from knee surgery. Despite the long recovery period, Naotala was prepared to work hard. During the 2016 offseason conditioning program, the first under strength/conditioning coordinator Bubba Reynolds, the Warriors each did 10 sprint-pushes of weighted sleds per workout. This past spring, they did 18. […]

“It’s like a big family”

By Stephen Tsai on July 2, 2017

The meet-greet-here’s-your-seat tour continued with Nick Rolovich delivering season tickets and a Las Vegas travel package to Hilary and Velerie Orillo yesterday in Wahiawa. Video: Delivery video Hilary said he has been a season-ticket subscriber since the “Tomey days.” In the early year, his brother would buy the tickets, they would divide them, and Hilary would pay for his share. Several years ago, his brother moved to a different section. But Hilary decided to stay put — in the blue […]

‘Bows led NCAA in fewest walks allowed

By Stephen Tsai on July 1, 2017

One of the things baseball coaches and beat writers have in common is an affinity for pitchers who throw strikes. (Reporters with tight deadlines also appreciate quarterbacks who don’t throw incompletions, point guards who don’t foul, especially in four-possession games in the final minute, and soccer players who don’t do the worm-like-injury dance after being kicked in the shin.) And that’s why there’s great appreciation for the ‘Bows’ 2017 pitching staff, which led the nation in fewest walks allowed this season. […]

Elements can’t slow Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on June 30, 2017

It is known as the “sauna effect” — rain followed by heat. The Warriors endured those elements during this morning’s workout, which also marked the end of Summer Session I. Several Warriors will attend Summer Session II, which begins on Monday. Many will stick around until the start of the July 26 start of training camp. And some will return to the mainland to visit family and work out on their own. The Warriors will have a week off from […]

Special addition

By Stephen Tsai on June 29, 2017

One of our favorites from the 2007 Warriors was Francis Maka, a reserve DE/OLB and key special-teams player. Maka played two years at UH, earned a degree in mathematics, and enjoyed a substantial career in arena football. It all started with Maka’s desire to join the Warriors primarily as a specialist. Everyone has a role, and UH offered Maka a scholarship to set wedges on returns and dismantle blocks. Through the years there have been many Warriors whose best roles […]
