O-lineman to join Warriors

An offensive lineman who was raised in Hawaii but played his senior season in California will be joining the Warriors as a walk-on. Stephan Bernal-Wendt is 6 feet 4 and 315 pounds. He played for Kaiser High as a sophomore and junior before transferring to Salesian High in Los Angeles. His grandfather, Ma‘afu Wendt, is president of the Hawaii Rugby Union. The Warriors are trying to rebuild the triangle offense following the graduations of short-snapper Brodie Nakama, holder Ikaika Woolsey and kicker/punter Rigo Sanchez. Tick … tick … tick … Yep, there are 16 days until the Warriors open camp. And after a week’s break, the Warriors were back in action for the final 10 workouts of the offseason conditioning program. As usual, the workouts were divided into three groups.

Solid debut for UH rookies

Yesterday’s team-bonding excursion at Schofield proved one thing: the Warriors have some pretty good recruits. Offensive lineman Brandon Kipper easily maneuvered through the seven-obstacle course. Running back Miles Reed also had little trouble in the skills competition. Tight end Kade Greeley was impressive. At the invitation of the Army, the Warriors participated in team bonding exercises at Schofield today. For the seven-station obstacle course, the Warriors traveled by helicopter to an obscure area.

Warriors add Australian kicker

Kicker Ryan Meskell is set to the join the Warriors when training camp opens on July 26. Meskell was a goalkeeper for soccer teams at Lewis and Clark Community College in Illinois and for teams in his native Australia. Meskell has trained as a football kicker at Prokick, a Melbourne-based program that developed Alex Dunnachie, Scott Harding and Stan Gaudion. OL Webb will miss 2017 season

Offensive lineman Austin Webb is recovering from a MRSA infection and will not play for the Warriors this coming season. Webb, who is recovering at his family’s home in Dallas, said he plans to attend classes in the fall. “I’m going to root for my boys this season and I’m praying for the team,” Webb told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in a telephone interview today.
