Help is on the way

By Stephen Tsai on October 1, 2017

The Warriors are expected to be healthier for Saturday’s road game against Nevada. Offensive linemen Dejon Allen and Fred Ulu-Perry and tight end Metuisela ‘Unga are expected to be available, head coach Nick Rolovich said. Tight end Dakota Torres’ availability will be evaluated this week. The Warriors depart on Thursday afternoon. There also is a possibility that placekicker Michael Boyle might be involved in the game plan. “I think Wyoming hurt more than this one just because we should have […]

Game day: Colorado State

By Stephen Tsai on September 30, 2017

Twenty-eight days later … yes, it’s been that long since the Warriors played in Aloha Stadium. During that span, the Warriors have not won a game, two hurricanes hit the Americas, and Colorado State has practiced twice at Aloha Stadium. This is a challenging game for both teams. The Warriors must deal with the Rams’ prolific offense (2.54 points per possession), led by quarterback Nick Stevens and speedy receivers Michael Gallup and Olabisi Johnson, and a tough defense defense. The […]

4-star LB set to visit this weekend

By Stephen Tsai on September 29, 2017

It’s a big recruiting weekend for the Warriors. The Warrior Beat has learned that there are at least six players taking official visits this weekend. > The NCAA allows each prospect to take up to five official visits. Solomon Tuliapupu, a 4-star linebacker from Mater Dei, is using one of those precious visits on Hawaii. Tuliapupu, who is 6-2 and 220 pounds, also is being pursued by Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon and USC. > Rocky Katoanga is a […]

Rolo vs. Bobo challenge

By Stephen Tsai on September 28, 2017

As the Warriors prepare to play their Mountain West home opener on Saturday, head coach Nick Rolovich issued a challenge to CSU coach Mike Bobo to compete in the pregame garbage-can battle. It is a drill the UH quarterbacks go through daily as they try to toss a football into a garbage can from at least 30 yards away. “It came to me yesterday,” Rolovich said of the challenge. “I like Bobo. He’s a former quarterback.” Rolovich said the rules, […]

Oi, oi, oi

With last year’s participation in the Sydney Cup and extensive recruiting in Australia, the Warriors have developed relations with the land down under. Journalist Jeremy Pierce, who plans to do a story on the Warriors, and his wife Angie and daughter Trinity attended today’s practice as part of their 10-day vacation. After practice, Jeremy chatted with Australia-raised players Ryan Meskell, Stan Gaudion, Max Hendrie and Ben Scruton. By the way, Trinity is a running back on a club football team […]

Warriors go back to work

By Stephen Tsai on September 26, 2017

After a loooong road trip to Laramie and a short mourning period, the Warriors were back practicing this morning on the grass field. The Warriors spent extended sessions working on CSU’s schemes. That, of course, is the advantage of practicing at home. With a limited travel roster, the Warriors do not get to practice against the scout teams on the road. At home, the scouts can provide several different looks because of their large personnel. Defensive tackles Viane Moala and […]

Run-bows

By Stephen Tsai on September 25, 2017

During today’s news conference, CSU coach Mike Bobo noted how the Warriors employed a physical running attack. The statistics prove that point. The Warriors are averaging 215.5 rushing yards per game in 2017. That’s the highest average since 223.4 in 1995, the last season the Warriors ran the triple-option offense. Even in 2010, when the Alex Green ran for a school-record 327 yards against New Mexico State, the Warriors averaged 114.6 rushing yards per game.

Warriors are even in an uneven season

By Stephen Tsai on September 24, 2017

A third of the season has been completed, and this is what we’ve learned: > Diocoemy Saint Juste and Ryan Tuiasoa are a powerful 1-2 punch. The Warriors also found ways to get Saint Juste the ball on screens and slip passes. It might be intriguing to see Tuiasoa the target of screens, too. > It’s one thing to identify the need to avoid relinquishing chunk plays; it’s another to stop them. The Warriors practice against it, emphasize it, and […]
