Filling the slot

By Stephen Tsai on October 17, 2017

It was, of course, devastating for the Warriors to lose slotback John Ursua for the rest of the season because of a torn ACL. He was the leading receiver (7.8 catches per game), accounting for 30.9 percent of the Warriors’ 152 receptions. But after Ursua departed, the Warriors re-worked the game plan. When Ursua played, Dru Brown threw to three different receivers. In Ursua’s absence, the Warriors ran 69 plays — 52 rushes, 17 passes. The pass distribution went this […]

Slotback John Ursua has been diagnosed with a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the football season. Ursua, a third-year sophomore, suffered the injury on the first play of the second quarter the past Saturday. Ursua is sixth nationally in receiving yards per game (111.2) and seventh in receptions (7.8 per game).

Game Day: San Jose State

By Stephen Tsai on October 14, 2017

And we move on to the second half of the season … It’s homecoming, and here’s what to watch: > UH offensive line: I’m at Kailua Safeway last night, and a former UH lineman tells me — insists — that John Estes is a great coach. As Dave Koga once told me, always listen to the o-linemen. They know the most. The linemen have been blocking well for Diocemy Saint Juste and keeping Dru Brown upright. Estes should be able […]

Cherry departing

By Stephen Tsai on October 13, 2017

Yep, as you might have heard, sportscaster Mike Cherry is leaving KITV to work at a news station in New Hampshire. His last day in Hawaii is Oct. 23. Like most people from Maui, Cherry is a nice guy and hard worker. We wish him the best as Hawaii’s sportscasting landscape continues to change.

Upbeat practice for Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on October 12, 2017

The Warriors capped a week of full practices with a lively 2-hour workout this morning. In the shake-it-up theme, the practice punctuated with an offense-versus-defense session during which quarterback Dru Brown led a 70-yard drive. Brown threw 4 yards to slotback John Ursua for the touchdown. Ursua accounted for 63 yards on four catches. “I thought we had a good practice,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. “Good energy, good juice.” Rolovich spiced this week’s practices by mixing in competitions. “That […]

Born to run

By Stephen Tsai on October 11, 2017

As running back Diocemy Saint Juste closes in on his second consecutive 1,000-yard season, former UH head coach Dick Tomey reflects on the last Warrior to have twice rushed for 1,000 yard in his UH career. “Gary Allen was a receiver,” Tomey said. “Right in the middle of practice one day, all our running backs went down. I knew Gary, when we recruited him, he thought he might be a running back. He didn’t know. I said, ‘Gary, jump in […]

Ex-lineman delivers inspiration

By Stephen Tsai on October 10, 2017

With the season on the line, the Warriors summoned a former offensive lineman. RJ Hollis delivered an impassioned us-against-the-world speech that set the tone for one of the most spirited practices of the season. The Warriors are 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Mountain West following a stunning 35-21 loss to Nevada the past weekend. “We were 4-7 last year, and we got a bowl ring, the first one 10 years,” Hollis said. “Football is a game of every Saturday […]
