Warriors hire defensive intern

By Stephen Tsai on February 24, 2018

Nanumi Lolohea, who was Garden City Junior College’s linebackers coach this past season, has been hired as a UH intern for defense. He also was linebackers coach for three seasons at Jasper (Texas) High and graduate for two years at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. Earlier, UH confirmed that Billy Ray Stutzmann, a former UH and Saint Louis School wideout, was hired as an intern for offense.

Band of brothers

By Stephen Tsai on February 23, 2018

Saint Louis School students pride themselves on being part of a “brotherhood.” As a Saint Louis upperclassman a few years ago, UH wideout Devan Stubblefield volunteered to serve as a “big brother” to a young Crusader. The role is to advise and tutor. Stubblefield was big brother to quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, a UH signee who will join the Warriors this summer. “Who’d have thought we’d be playing together (at UH)?” said Stubblefild, who will be a senior this fall. Stubblefield […]

By Stephen Tsai on February 22, 2018

It’s finally official: Billy Ray Stutzmann has been hired as a football intern for the Warriors’ offense. He is reunited with his brother, Craig Stutzmann, the Warriors’ quarterbacks coach and pass-game coordinator. Billy Ray Stutzmann, a former UH and Saint Louis School wideout, coached at Henry & Emory the past three years. Craig Stuzmann and Timmy Chang are former Warriors who also coached at Henry & Emory. * * * * * The Warriors are in the final stages of […]

Don’t build it, they still might come

By Stephen Tsai on February 21, 2018

Two things caught my attention recently — and that’s significant, because I have attention-deficit issues. There was a late-night TV commercial promoting Penn State’s on-line program. There’s also an ESPN.com story about the success of Grand Canyon University, fueled in part by private donations and an enrollment surge (particularly through the on-line program). So, let’s see … UH-Manoa has a money problem in keeping up with building maintenance and repairs … in-class enrollment has been a struggle … hmmm … […]

Tick-tock, tick-tock … job is on the clock

By Stephen Tsai on February 20, 2018

If anyone — from you to your cousin’s best friend’s step-brother — is interested in becoming a UH assistant football coach, it would be best to apply by today’s deadline. Today is the fifth business day since UH posted the opening for the coaching job vacated when Mayur Chaudhari resigned as special teams coordinator to work for the the Atlanta Falcons. According to H.R. rules, UH may begin reviewing and vetting candidates tomorrow. You, your cousin’s best friend’s step-brother and […]

Nu‘uanu-Kuhi‘iki moving to O-line

By Stephen Tsai on February 19, 2018

Joey Nu‘uanu-Kuhi‘iki is crossing the line. After two years on the defensive line, Nu‘uanu-Kuhi‘iki is moving to the offensive line. Nu‘uanu-Kuhi‘iki is a Waianae High graduate who redshirted in 2016 and played in two games in 2017. “I’m gonna try my hardest, whatever I got to do for the team,” he said. As a former high school wrestler, he appears to possess the footwork and first-step burst to fit as a blocker.

Power is back

By Stephen Tsai on February 18, 2018

As noted previously, one of the more interesting elements of the transition to a pure run-and-shoot is the resurgence of the power back. It’s key position for a scheme that will no longer employ a full-time tight end. UH’s lineage of power backs includes West Keliikipi, Reagan Mauia, Jason Laumoli, Nate Ilaoa and, even for a spell, Kiko Faalologo. The latest is Kaiwi Chung, who moves from H-back/tight end/fullback to running back. As a Kamehameha senior in 2013, Chung was […]

Filling the slots

By Stephen Tsai on February 17, 2018

The vision was to have slotbacks Dylan Collie and John Ursua zig-zagging through defenses in the Warriors’ revival of the run-and-shoot offense. Collie’s decision to transfer after he graduates this May — he visited BYU last weekend and is set to visit Vanderbilt next month — alters but does not dim the enthusiasm. According to people in the know, Kumoku Noa, who will be a third-year sophomore in the fall, is challenging for that open slot position. Noa reportedly has gained […]
