The defense won the day, Nick Rolovich said following today’s fourth practice of spring training. The Warriors returned to the practice field after a one-week hiatus because of UH’s spring break. In an all-or-nothing move, former Warrior receiver Makoa Camanse-Stevens will compete in a two-day Canadian Football League tryout. The audition is set for May 5-6 in Seattle. Camanse-Stevens, who was a quarterback at Kamehameha Schools, is hopeful of landing an invitation to a CFL camp. If not, he is strongly considering that the tryout will be his last attempt at pursuing a pro-football job. Bubba Reynolds, the strength and conditioning coordinator for football the past two seasons, is no longer with the program, the Warrior Beat has confirmed. Tommy Heffernan, UH’s overall strength and conditioning coordinator, and his staff will work with the Warriors until a replacement is named. Three former Warriors — inside linebacker Simon Poti, outside linebacker Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea and running back Paul Harris — are participating in Spring League 2018, a two-week showcase in Austin, Texas. More than 120 players are divided into four teams, with games scheduled for April 7 and April 12. Poti said scouts from pro teams have been attending practices. Former UH running back Ryan Tuiasoa still has pro dreams. His current one will be narrated in Finnish. Tuiasoa said he has signed a contract to play for the Hameenlinna Huskies of Finland’s Maple League. It sounds strange for this to be opening day for baseball considering the ‘Bows aleeady have played 22 games. But, in a way, the significant part of UH’s season begins today with the Big West opener at UC Irvine. Scott Galetti is the new play-by-play announcer for the ESPN 1420 AM broadcasts of Rainbow baseball road games. Galetti, an award-winning broadcaster, is based in New Mexico. Galetti replaces Mel Proctor, who announced UH road games the past few years.
