UH is victim of system failure

By Stephen Tsai on April 22, 2018

Hawaii volleyball fans should be outraged for the Warriors’ snub from the NCAA tournament. Of course, the Warriors deserve one of the two at-large berths. And, of course, the NCAA should be held accountable — but not for the decision. There was no NCAA official on the selection committee. Instead, representatives from three universities picked the two at-large teams. It would be like blaming the rain, when the blame should be on the conditions that led to the rain. The […]

Upbeat ending to 4th week of spring ball

By Stephen Tsai on April 21, 2018

One of the most joyous moments of the day — heck, of spring training — was wideot Devan Stubblefield’s touchdown during the scrimmage-like session. On third-and-10, Stubblefield, who is aligned on the right side, runs a snag route (mini curl). Stubblefield catches the pass from Cole McDonald, spins away from two defenders and finds the end zone. At least we think he did. After he crossed the plane, the entire offense surrounded Stubblefield in celebration. “That was a big play […]

Spring practice No. 11

By Stephen Tsai on April 19, 2018

Another spring football practice, another rainy, rainy day. This time, it was the defense’s turn to shine: > In the team session, cornerback Rojesterman Farris II deflected a pass away from wideout Marcus Armstrong-Brown, and later scored on a pick-6. > In a winner-take-all session, defensive end Kaimana Padello and linebacker Jahlani Tavai each made sacks as the defense stopped the offense. That meant … the offensive players had to run gassers after practice. > The deepest unit appears to […]

Invitations are in the mail

By Stephen Tsai on April 18, 2018

The Warriors are inviting football alumni to attend the April 28 spring game and ensuing reception at the UH baseball game. The Warriors have sent out personal invitations, although all football alumni are invited. The spring festivities, including the spring game, will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Ching Athletic Complex. The reception will be in a grass area inside the Les Murakami Stadium gates. Na Koa will provide free tickets for the baseball game. Interested former […]

Former Warrior signs with BC Lions

By Stephen Tsai on April 17, 2018

Sometimes good things happen to good people. Former Warrior linebacker Makani Kema-Kaleiwahea today signed a one-year contract with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. “It’s a dream come true,” said Kema-Kaleiwahea, who completed his UH career in December 2016 and played in football leagues in Germany and Japan the past year. “I went around the entire world to get this opportunity.” The Lions, who are based in Vancouver, British Columbia, secured the CFL’s exclusive negotiation rights to Kema-Kaleiwahea […]

Here come the Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on April 16, 2018

If your Oahu high school has a football team and a head coach who works at that school, there will be a UH assistant coach on that campus today. The open period for NCAA recruiting has started, and beginning today, coaches are permitted to have on-campus visits at high schools. UH has scheduled visits to every school that fields a varsity football team and whose head coach is an employee. The plan calls for UH coaches to visit every football-playing […]

Sho Time

By Stephen Tsai on April 15, 2018

Sure, Shohei Ohtani is evoking images of days of yore as a pitcher/designated hitter for the Angels. But the baseball ‘Bows are evoking memories of Billy Blanchette with two two-way players. Logan Pouelsen has pitched and been used as a DH this season. For today’s game, he is playing first base. And last night, Jeremy Yelland was used as a pinch hitter. He drew a walk. Yelland, a promising pitcher, also is a capable position player. Word also is that […]

Double days

By Stephen Tsai on April 14, 2018

It’s a two-a-day workout for several UH football players. Because of today’s 1 p.m. start for the continuation of last night’s weather-suspended baseball game, several UH football players are working the concession stand. After working the first game, they will scoot to Ching Field for the football Warriors’ ninth practice of spring training. * * * * * Designated hitter Logan Pouelsen was at the plate when last night’s game was stopped because of heavy rain and then lightning. For […]
