Former Warriors John Ursua and Jahlani Tavai were impressive during today’s UH pro day on the UCLA campus. Despite still being bothered by hamstring ailment, Ursua, a receiver, was credited with running 40 yards in 4.58 seconds. He had a 10-foot broad jump, and completed the short shuttle in 6.78 seconds. Va‘a Niumatalolo will serve as graduate assistant this football season, head coach Nick Rolovich confirmed today. Niumatalolo worked as an offensive intern this past year. In his new role, Niumatalolo will work with the offensive linemen. Niumatalolo replaces Jake Thomas, who recently accepted the O-line coach’s job at Azusa Pacific. Niumatalolo’s father is Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, a former UH quarterback and coach.

The countdown to the Warriors’ March 29 start of spring ball has started. The Warriors are wrapping up this portion of offseason training this week. UH’s spring break kicks off on Saturday. Next week, nine former Warriors will compete in UH’s pro day in conjunction with the UCLA football team. And yesterday, 12 UH Manoa students participated in the walk-on tryouts at Ching field. The Warriors are seeking a replacement for Numi Lolohea, who accepted a graduate assistant’s job at Tennessee. Lolohea was the Warriors’ GA for the defensive line last year. The process for being accepted into a graduate program is lengthy, but working as a UH grad assistant or intern has been a boost to careers.
