Ursua, Tavai impress scouts at pro day

By Stephen Tsai on March 19, 2019

Former Warriors John Ursua and Jahlani Tavai were impressive during today’s UH pro day on the UCLA campus. Despite still being bothered by hamstring ailment, Ursua, a receiver, was credited with running 40 yards in 4.58 seconds. He had a 10-foot broad jump, and completed the short shuttle in 6.78 seconds. Tavai, a linebacker, did not participate in the measurement events because of the short preparation time following last year’s shoulder surgery. But Tavai did well in field drills, according […]

By Stephen Tsai on March 14, 2019

It’s game night with fourth-seeded UH and No. 5 Long Beach State meeting in the opening round of the Big West tournament. The Rainbow Warriors are at ease in Orange County with this being their 10th day on the road. With their final regular-season game against Cal State Fullerton, the ‘Bows did not even have to change hotels. Eran Ganot said it was one of the rare Sundays on the road not spent in an airport or on an airplane. […]

The countdown to the Warriors’ March 29 start of spring ball has started. The Warriors are wrapping up this portion of offseason training this week. UH’s spring break kicks off on Saturday. Next week, nine former Warriors will compete in UH’s pro day in conjunction with the UCLA football team. And yesterday, 12 UH Manoa students participated in the walk-on tryouts at Ching field. Among the hopefuls were Austin Antoni (Radford), Tristan Fleming-Nazara (Konawaena), Noa Kamana (Punahou) and Trey Larsen, […]

Warrior Beat: Fogel likely to miss rest of season

By Stephen Tsai on March 9, 2019

The UH baseball team received more discouraging news when an MRI showed center fielder Adam Fogel suffered significant damage to his right (throwing) shoulder. Fogel suffered the injury during an eighth-inning slide a week ago. The hope was the injury was not too serious, and that he eventually would feel good enough to be used as a designated hitter, at the least. But the pain did not subside, and Friday’s MRI confirmed the worst-case scenario. It appears Fogel will need […]

Rainbow Warrior baseball: No short cuts

By Stephen Tsai on March 6, 2019

The late, great Ferd Borsch once noted that baseball, as a sport without a clock, could conceivably have a game that never ends. Well, we have a clock and we noticed that UH games involving video-review options take longer — much, much longer — than games without. According to our abacus and moon dial, the four games allowing reviews averaged 3 hours, 56 minutes. Games without the reviews averaged 3 hours, 14 minutes. There are some factors. The replay monitors […]

Warriors seeking GA for D-line

By Stephen Tsai on March 3, 2019

The Warriors are seeking a replacement for Numi Lolohea, who accepted a graduate assistant’s job at Tennessee. Lolohea was the Warriors’ GA for the defensive line last year. The process for being accepted into a graduate program is lengthy, but working as a UH grad assistant or intern has been a boost to careers. Since the end of the 2018 season, Billy Ray Stutzmann has been hired as offensive assistant coach at Navy, Jake Thomas joined Azusa Pacific as the […]
