UH football gains mental edge

By Stephen Tsai on March 30, 2019

Woody Blevins has officially joined the UH football coaching staff as an intern/quality-control coach. His hiring was approved on Friday. Blevins spent the previous seven seasons at Northern Colorado, ascending from volunteer to graduate assistant to full-time assistant coach to special teams coordinator/cornerbacks coach. He also has held the title of “mental edge,” the UNC’s sports psychology director. “It was hard and it was easy,” Blevins said of leaving UNC. “It was hard because I love my players and I’d […]

Warrior Beat: Warriors open spring ball

By Stephen Tsai on March 29, 2019

It was a lively start to spring training with today’s 2-hour practice on the grass field. Quarterbacks Cole McDonald and Chevan Cordeiro were in good form. During the passing session, McDonald was 9-for-10; Cordeiro was 6-for-8. McDonald is fully healthy after playing in pain last year following injuries to his knee and side. He completed two long passes to Jason-Matthew Sharsh and Dante McGee. Cordeiro has worked on adding weight. Head coach Nick Rolovich has marveled at Cordeiro’s elusiveness and […]

Leland Green, Brandon Thomas leaving UH basketball team

By Stephen Tsai on March 28, 2019

Reserve guards Leland Green and Brandon Thomas are leaving the UH basketball team. Both players requested — and received — releases from their scholarships, then entered the NCAA portal, a list of available transfer players that is circulated to all NCAA programs. Green played in 57 games, starting 36, in his first two UH seasons. But he underwent shoulder surgery at the end of the 2017-2018 season. This recently completed season, he averaged 8.3 minutes and 2.6 points in 27 […]

Warrior Beat: Springing back

By Stephen Tsai on March 27, 2019

Slotback Dante McGee and offensive lineman Kauka Umiamaka have both landed spots on the Warriors’ spring roster. The Warriors open spring ball on Friday. McGee, a Pearl City High graduate, made last year’s spring roster after acing a walk-on tryout. But there was not enough room for him to advance to the opening-game roster. Last spring, Umiamaka, a Castle High graduate, announced he would be joining the Warriors as a walk-on. But, again, there was not enough space on the […]

Warrior Beat: Former Punahou LB joins Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on March 23, 2019

Noa Kamana, a former Punahou linebacker, has been added to the Warriors’ spring roster as a defensive back. Kamana, who is 6 feet 185 pounds, played a combo linebacker for Pacific as a true freshman in 2017. Earlier this month, Kamana impressed at UH’s walk-on tryouts, earning a spot with the Warriors. Kamana comes from a successful football family. His grandfather, John “Squeeze” Kamana Jr. was USC’s center in the 1950s. His uncle, John Kamana III, was a running back […]

Warrior Beat: Finish to start

By Stephen Tsai on March 22, 2019

Baseball coach Mike Trapasso has a unique dilemma: His best pitcher is his best starter and best reliever. His solution is to try to use Dylan Thomas in a closer’s role in the first two games of a series. If situations dictate that Thomas does not appear in those two games, he starts in the third. And that’s why Thomas will start in Saturday’s third game of the four-game series against Ohio State. The Rainbow Warriors dropped the first two […]

Former QB joins UH staff as intern

By Stephen Tsai on March 20, 2019

Kolney Cassel, a backup quarterback for UH last season, will serve as an intern for the Warriors. It should be an easy transition for Cassel, who spent every day in the quarterback room in meetings, video reviews and exchanging ideas. Even before his stint as a graduate transfer, Cassel had deep knowledge of the Warriors’ run-and-shoot offense. He began his NCAA career as a quarterback at SMU under June Jones. Cassel has proven to be a helpful teammate. Prior to […]
