Warrior Beat: Hawaii football’s lessons as spring ball closes

By Stephen Tsai on April 28, 2019

When statuesque models in outlandish getups walk the runway, the question usually is: Who would buy such outfits? The answer, of course, is nobody. Fashion shows are about material, colors, symmetry staged in exaggerated forms. And so it was with the Warriors’ spring game, which was set to a circus theme. The sideshows and characters were for entertainment. The purpose of the 90-play game was to determine the Warriors’ fabric. And here’s what we learned exiting spring training: > Depth: […]

Hawaii Football: Detroit Lions pick Jahlani Tavai in 2nd round of NFL Draft

By Stephen Tsai on April 26, 2019

The Detroit Lions today selected former Hawaii linebacker Jahlani Tavai in the second round of the NFL Draft. As the 43rd overall selection, Tavai ties for the third-highest pick for a former UH player. Ashley Lelie was picked in the first round, 19th overall, by the Denver Broncos in 2002. The Tennessee Titans picked Travis LaBoy in the second round, 42nd overall, in 2004. In 2003, Linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa was picked at No. 43 by the St. Louis Rams. Running […]

Warrior Beat: Hawaii football workouts done, spring game on deck

By Stephen Tsai on April 25, 2019

The Warriors held their final full spring football practice today. There will be a light walk-through session on Friday afternoon. The spring game is set Saturday, with the circus-themed event beginning at 4 p.m. at the Ching Athletic Complex. Unlike previous years, this spring game will match two full teams — Mauka (first-team offense, second-team defense) vs. Makai (first-team defense, second-team offense). The game — four quarters of running time — should answer some depth-chart questions. Maybe. The past week, […]

Warrior Beat: Hawaii football hits local recruiting circuit

By Stephen Tsai on April 17, 2019

If your Oahu high school fields a varsity football team, that was a UH football coach wearing an H-logo shirt on your campus on Monday. The NCAA’s evaluation period for football prospects began this week. It is a time when college assistant coaches may visit a football-playing school to meet with coaches, teachers and counselors to discuss football prospects. UH coach Nick Rolovich‘s plan was to make sure an assistant coach visited every Oahu school with a football team. “We […]

Warrior Beat: Nose tackle earns Hawaii football scholarship

By Stephen Tsai on April 16, 2019

Today’s practice had just ended but there was one more point to be made. In the post-practice circle, coach Nick Rolvich awarded a scholarship to nose tackle Azia Se‘ei. It comes at a perfect time. The help Se‘ei receives through the GI Bill — his father was in the Navy for more than 25 years — was set to expire this summer. Se‘ei is set to earn a bachelor’s degree in May 2020. Se‘ei also has been playing on the […]

He averaged 9.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists while defending several spots. Madut was born in Sudan, grew up in Australia, and attended the DME Academy, a prep school in Florida, before joining EFSC. Madut’s […]

Warrior Beat: Middle schoolers, “GOT,” hoops banquet

By Stephen Tsai on April 14, 2019

Things are getting busier and busier on the Manoa campus. Yesterday marked the Warriors’ first “Middle School Day.” While most schools have “Junior Days” for high school students wishing to learn more about their institutions (and football programs, of course), UH had an open house for middle school students. The emphasis is that no matter your future aspirations, every class in high school counts. Too often when students are considering college, they are hindered by poor grades as freshmen or […]
