Hawaii athletics: Compliance officer Richard Greene heading to Auburn

By Stephen Tsai on August 23, 2019

Sometimes, it seems Richard Greene is everywhere. He’s at UH football practices at 7 in the morning and basketball practices at 3. He’s at the Nagatani Center all day. At Les Murakami Stadium, that scoreboard often is being run by … well, Rich. And then when it’s 9:50 on a Thursday morning, and there’s Rich at Ala Moana Center’s Satellite City Hall, you realize, he is everywhere. Especially since an hour-long coffee hour in his honor started at 9 a.m. […]

Hawaii football: Isaiah Tufaga to transfer from Oregon State to UH

By Stephen Tsai on August 21, 2019

Linebacker Isaiah Tufaga, a former All-State football player from Saint Louis School, is poised to transfer from Oregon State to UH. “I can’t wait,” Isaiah Tufaga told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser this morning. Tufaga, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound sophomore, said he finalized his decision on Tuesday, the final day of Oregon State’s training camp. “It had nothing to do with football,” Tufaga said of his decision. “It had to do with things off the field. I figured coming back home is the […]

Warrior Beat: Hawaii football has head-to-toe trial run

By Stephen Tsai on August 20, 2019

In preparation for Saturday’s season opener against Arizona, the Hawaii football team wore their game helmets and game shoes during today’s two-hour practice. Head coach Nick Rolovich said breaking in the black helmets and Under Armour shoes was a “sign” that the first kickoff was approaching. “I think the team is fairly mature in that it doesn’t affect them one way or another,” Rolovich said. “I think it’s a subliminal message we’ve got a few more days.” The Warriors worked […]

Warrior Beat: Rolovich endorses Murphy’s law

By Stephen Tsai on August 18, 2019

Honolulu Hale will have a new tenant at the end of 2020, and head coach Nick Rolovich already has suggested a candidate. During the past Wednesday’s Pigskin Pigout, Rolovich announced — in jest, we think — that the event’s organizer, Don Murphy, would be running for mayor. That declaration was greeted with rousing applause. Not so enthusiastic was the bidding for a campaign manager, with the salary starting at a dollar. Of course, there’s a snag to this campaign. “Murph” […]

Warrior Beat: Hawaii football ends training camp

By Stephen Tsai on August 17, 2019

The Warriors ended training camp with today’s 90-minute practice on the grass field. The wind-down came in stages: last week’s final full-contact scrimmage, the creation of scout teams and depth charts, and the newcomers moving out of camp-assigned dorm rooms. The regular student body moves into the dorms this week. With the fall semester starting on Monday, Aug. 26 — two days after the season-opening game — the traditional camp schedule appears to be out of order. School usually opens […]

Warrior Beat: Alema Kapoi completes transfer from Navy to Hawaii football

By Stephen Tsai on August 14, 2019

It felt like ol’ times for defensive lineman Alema Kapoi. “It’s good to be out here,” said Kapoi, who transferred from Navy and joined the Warriors on Tuesday. “I haven’t been in pads since Army-Navy all the way back in December.” Kapoi is a 2016 Kamehameha-Kapalama graduate. As a senior, he was named to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s All-State first team. He attended Navy’s prep academy for a year, delaying the start of his NCAA eligibility clock until the 2017 season. […]

Warrior Beat: Uahinui earns Hawaii football scholarship

By Stephen Tsai on August 13, 2019

It has been quite a week for quarterback Justin Uahinui — and it’s only been two days. On Monday, Uahinui, a third-year sophomore from Farrington High, was assigned to the primary group of quarterbacks behind Cole McDonald and Chevan Cordeiro. Uahinui had practiced mostly as a scout quarterback the previous two seasons. This afternoon, Uahinui was awarded a football scholarship. Head coach Nick Rolovich said Uahinui was deserving because of his development as a player, his camaraderie with teammates, and […]
