UH football: It’s ‘Go’ time

By Stephen Tsai on July 17, 2016

A few days ago, head coach Nick Rolovich decided he wanted to use the Pokemon Go craze as a way to bring together UH and the community. Rolovich consulted with his kids and players, notably Marcus Kemp, Samson Anguay, Steven Lakalaka and Zach Wilson, then planned a Pokemon hunt on the Manoa campus. Rolovich spread the word through tweets and e-cards. He alerted the media. He also gained clearance with Campus Security. Yes, even virtual events require navigating red tape. […]

UH football: On their own

By Stephen Tsai on July 16, 2016

Once again, the players took control, conducting their own workouts. After going through 45 minutes of plays, they decided to have a little fun, with players switching sides during a game of two-hand touch. (Safety Trayvon Henderson’s turn as a running quarterback is impressive. Check the video below.) Then it was on to the fun stuff. On to the videos: > A little razzle-dazzle: > Trayvon Henderson: > Screen play: * * * * * Princess Leila has selected Kapakahi […]

Princess Leila will choose a winner. * * * * * Nick Rolovich is inviting UH fans/kids to hunt Pokemon on the Manoa campus. It will be safe (Warriors will provide protection) and fun. It also will give kids a chance to be on a college campus. The event will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, July 16) […]

UH football: Play-calling role fits Smith

By Stephen Tsai on July 14, 2016

The thing about Nick Rolovich is he does not make rash decisions. And, after months of pondering, Rolovich promoted running backs coach/run-game coordinator Brian Smith to offensive coordinator and associate head coach. The move is significant. It means Smith will call the offensive plays and that Rolovich will not. It also means that if anything happens to Rolovich, Smith is in charge of the program. Rolovich and Smith were roommates and UH teammates in the early 2000s, student managers under […]

No pause for the cause

By Stephen Tsai on July 13, 2016

Oh, to be young. After eight weeks of conditioning drills and workouts, yesterday was supposed to be a day of rest. But some Warriors decided to conduct their own mini-unsupervised workout … at noon. Under heated conditions, they ran routes against imaginary coverages for about an hour. First, we start with the videos — in slo-mo, of course. > Dylan Collie > Makoa Camanse-Stevens > Ammon Barker On to the pictures:

Making memories

By Stephen Tsai on July 10, 2016

Through his journey from Punahou to Notre Dame to the San Diego Chargers, linebacker Manti Teo always cheered for his childhood team. “We grew up watching UH,” Teo said. “You know how it is. We don’t have a professional team in Hawaii. UH is the only team we have here. I grew up with my ti leaf, eating all the shrimp and lamb curry at all the tailgates. It was one of the best memories.” Teo and Seattle Seahawks defensive […]
