Mother Nature knows metaphors. A heavy fog delayed flights out of San Diego and Los Angeles this morning. It’s been that kind of weekend for the Rainbow Warriors’ traveling party. The Warriors stayed overnight in San Diego following Saturday’s loss to San Diego State.
SAN DIEGO — Maybe it’s the weather (crispy cool but not brrr) or this gorgeous destination city. But everyone, including the coaches, appears to be in a really happy mood. SAN DIEGO — The Warriors had a lively 90-minute walk-through session this morning at the University of San Diego’s lower practice field. USD is a postcard-perfect campus. Jim Harbaugh used to coach the Toreros. The campus also features the Jenny Craig Pavilion. It used to seat more but now slimmed down to 5,000 seats. (Yuck, yuck.)
After a condensed 90-minute practice this morning, the Warriors were set to depart this afternoon for their sixth road trip of the season. The Warriors’ offense was able to get work against both the scouts and the second-team defense. Because of travel limitations the Warriors will be without most of their scouts during tomorrow’s walk-through session. Question: Whatever happened to Ben Yee? Answer: Yee, who co-founded Na Koa (the football program’s booster club), said he is enjoying his “retirement” from his 45 years as a Rainbow Warrior volunteer. He said he was not forced out when he departed in 2012, and hinted that UH’s politics might have been a contributing factor. He said he adheres to his doctor’s advice to “relax more.” Yee, 85, remains an avid hunter of “four-legged animals” that are “legal to shoot.” […]
Dayton Furuta and Davine Tullis have moved across the line to offense. Furuta, who was recruited as a linebacker, is practicing as a fullback. He was used in that role at Mililani High. Furuta also is on the kickoff unit. Tullis was moved to defensive back two weeks ago. But he is now back at wideout. That gives assistant coach Kefense Hynson five former QBs in the receivers room: Tullis, Makoa Camanse-Stevens, Dylan Collie, Keelan Ewaliko and John Ursua.
