No stopping for wind, rain

By Stephen Tsai on November 23, 2016

While UMass has mixed business and pleasure during this stop of a 10-day trip — several of the Minutemen rented mopeds the past two days — the Warriors were all serious during today’s 2-hour practice. In the rain. And in strong wind. The reward is the Warriors will get to sleep in a little bit tomorrow. Practice will start an hour later than usual. * * * * * Question: Is UH’s special teams ever going to return a punt? […]

No suspension for LB this weekend

By Stephen Tsai on November 22, 2016

Linebacker Jeremiah Pritchard will not be suspended for the Rainbow Warriors’ regular-season finale against Massachusetts this Saturday. In the first half of the past Saturday’s 14-13 victory over Fresno State, Pritchard was ejected after video replays showed he threw a punch during an on-field skirmish. If the disqualification occurred in the second half, he would have faced an automatic suspension for the first half of this week’s game. Head coach Nick Rolovich said it is “up to us” to determine […]

Adding up

By Stephen Tsai on November 20, 2016

My colleagues have done the math, and they project 83 teams are eligible or a victory from being eligible for the 80 bowl berths. But because many of the one-away teams are playing each other, there is a strong possibility UH will qualify for one of the 80 spots if it beats UMass this coming Saturday. In any case, UH fans should wait before making party plans for Christmas Eve.

Game day: Fresno State

By Stephen Tsai on November 19, 2016

FRESNO — It’s a beautiful day in the beautiful Land of the Raisin Sun. We all know the Warriors need to win to keep alive the wish of playing on Christmas Eve. We all know that Fresno State, reeling from an eight-game losing streak but auditioning for new head coach Jeff Tedford, also would like to finish strong. Here are the side stories: > Quarterback duel: Last week, Dru Brown called an audible when he lobbied to remain in the […]

Trading places

By Stephen Tsai on November 18, 2016

FRESNO — After practicing this morning in San Jose, where they stayed overnight following a direct flight from Honolulu, the Warriors were set to arrive in Fresno this afternoon. * * * * * The rivalry between Fresno State and Hawaii extends to recruiting … and post recruiting. In February, Leilehua defensive tackle Netane Muti signed a letter of intent with UH. But Muti initially was told he projected to not meet the school’s admission requirements. Muti petitioned for a […]

Warriors set for final road trip

By Stephen Tsai on November 17, 2016

The Warriors are scheduled to depart this afternoon for their seventh — and final — road trip of the regular season. They will travel directly to San Jose, where they will spend the night. They will practice in San Jose tomorrow before making the nearly 3-hour drive to Fresno. The Warriors completed their Manoa practices with a 90-minute practice this morning on the grass practice field. In the 2-minute drill, freshman linebacker Ikem Okeke intercepted Dru Brown. On the next […]

Solving UH’s helmet dilemma

By Stephen Tsai on November 16, 2016

Question: Why do the Warriors have only one home uniform? How much does it cost for one uniform? Answer: “Would I love to have a home uniform and an away uniform and a couple options and a couple helmets?” coach Nick Rolovich said. “I’d love to.” But each uniform costs about $350. Painted helmets run about $400 apiece. Take those numbers, multiple them by 120 or so and … “There probably are other needs that can be taken care of […]
