Christmas surprises

By Stephen Tsai on December 25, 2016

How many college teams had a UFC champion as an honorary captain? Max Holloway’s appearance was one of the Warriors’ surprises in the Hawaii Bowl. * * * * * The most creative surprise was the fake punt and Makoa Camanse-Stevens’ believable acting. Camanse-Stevens feigned confusion, then took a 20-yard snap from Noah Borden. Camanse-Stevens, who was a Kamehameha quarterback, then made the 21-yard throw to Ammon Barker. Camanse-Stevens said he took an introductory acing class at Kamehameha. “Good education […]

Bowl Day: Middle Tennessee

By Stephen Tsai on December 24, 2016

A long season concludes today with the Warriors and Blue Raiders meeting in the Hawaii Bowl. This also will mark the final college game for wideout Marcus Kemp, Steven Lakalaka, Kory Rasmussen and Rigo Sanchez, among many. And it also might be the final game for Samson Anguay. Never say never, though. Anguay has been around so long that Dick Tomey was his special-teams coach. Sanchez will finish as the most accurate kicker in UH history. Well, sort of. Kenton […]

Tuileta set to join volleyball Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on December 23, 2016

Former Punahou two-sport athlete Larry “Tui” Tuileta is expected to join the volleyball Warriors next week. Tuileta, who was at USC for three semesters through December 2015, has met the requirements to complete his transfer to UH. He already had received conditional acceptance to enroll at UH next month. Tuileta will not receive any form of athletic scholarship from the volleyball Warriors, keeping open his options if he also wishes to pursue a career with the football team. He has […]

Warriors have final full practice of 2016

By Stephen Tsai on December 22, 2016

The Warriors had their final full practice of the season this morning. There will be a walk-through practice tomorrow, and then the Hawaii Bowl on Saturday. “I don’t think they realized it yet,” coach Nick Rolovich said of his players, “but come Monday, when they’re not grabbing their helmet out of their locker and all that stuff, that’s the stuff you miss.” Rolovich said a coach’s duties leave little time for reflection. “That’s the good thing about football in college,” […]

Warriors bring the juice

By Stephen Tsai on December 21, 2016

There was a Hawaii Bowl banner to greet the Warriors at the Moana Surfrider yesterday. There were elegant rooms. There was a luau. But was there juice? The Warriors responded with what the coaches described as their most focused bowl practice today at the Ching Athletic Complex. “We had a helmets-only practice, and they were dialed in,” coach Nick Rolovich said. “I was really worried, and then today, I think we’ll be ready to play.” The bowl amenities were “used […]

Moving day

By Stephen Tsai on December 20, 2016

The Warriors practiced for nearly 2 hours this morning, then prepared to check into the Moana Surfrider this afternoon. They also received gifts from the Hawaii Bowl — a backpack full of swag, as well as credit that they may use to acquire items from a gift room. * * * * * Former UH wideout Billy Ray Stutzmann attended today’s practice. This past season, Stutzmann served as receivers coach at Emory & Henry. Tim Chang, who was E&H’s offensive […]

Blue Christmas

By Stephen Tsai on December 19, 2016

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders are scheduled to arrive in town around noon, with a joint Hawaii Bowl news conference scheduled for 2 p.m. The Blue Raiders will have little time to rest. They practice this afternoon. The Warriors, meanwhile, practiced this morning for about 90 minutes. Part of the workout was devoted to running sprints. Among today’s attendees:

It’s $howtime for the Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on December 18, 2016

The Warriors are officially on Hawaii Bowl time. That means: > UH’s fall meal plan ran through brunch yesterday. After that, the Warriors became eligible for per diem. The daily allowance is $75, minus the cost of meals provided by the bowl or school. > Each Warrior will be receiving up to $925 in gifts — $375 from the school and $550 from the Hawaii Bowl. > Eleven staff members — three coordinators, six position coaches, director of recruiting/retention Jason […]
