By Stephen Tsai on October 11, 2019

BOISE >> The NCAA approved a waiver that allows Hawaii offensive lineman Michael Eletise to play this football season. Eletise practiced during the appeal process that forced him to miss the Warriors’ first five games. At issue was the rule requiring football players transferring between NCAA Division I programs to sit out a season. The exceptions are if the player earns a bachelor’s degree or receives a legislative-relief waiver. Eletise, a Kaiser High graduate, was at Arizona for three seasons […]

That meant every UH student-athlete participating in the training-table program this semester had the option of specially made omelets for his or her breakfast. * * * * * * The Warriors received a boost with offensive lineman Kohl Levao, who hasn’t played this season after suffering an injury on the fourth day of training camp, working with the first unit. Hawaii football: A good bye

By Stephen Tsai on October 5, 2019

The Warriors completed their third — and final — practice of bye week with sprints and renewed enthusiasm. “I think the development of the offense is progressing,” associate head coach Brian Smith said after today’s two-hour practice at the Ching Athletic Complex. “You can see that — growing through the second half of the Washington game, then Central Arkansas, then Reno. You’re seeing a progression of confidence … and familiarity and comfort playing together with each other offensively.” This weekend […]

Ta‘ala’s older brother is nose tackle Blessman Ta‘ala, who has started all 19 games of his UH career. > The elder Ta‘ala encouraged his brother to 1) first sign up for football, and 2) to join the Warriors. “I want to take the path my brother took,” Maurice Ta‘ala said. > […]

Remembering Hawaii football’s super fan

By Stephen Tsai on October 1, 2019

The next time somebody wonders about Hawaii football’s attendance, think about George “Kekoa” Furtado. Despite being weakened by cancer treatments, as well as lungs coated with Agent Orange from a war five decades earlier, Kekoa attended every UH home game in 2018. And he made it to the first two games at Aloha Stadium this year, saving each precious breath to cheer. The next time somebody wonders about root-root-rooting for the home team, think about Kekoa. He was elected as […]
