The NCAA Division I Council’s decision to eliminate multiple practices in one day could mean an earlier start to the Warriors’ training camp. Recruiting season re-opens today

Don’t hit the snooze button. That alarm this morning was the start of the NCAA football evaluation period. So, what the heck does that mean? From now until May 31, UH coaches may observe a prospect at spring practice, chat with most people except the prospect himself, and make one call (although coaches are permitted to receive calls initiated by the prospect). The UH coaches will hit the local recruiting trail this coming week. After that, they go off island.

New NCAA rules to impact UH football

The NCAA Division I Council today approved several measures that will impact the University of Hawaii football team. “It was big day,” UH coach Nick Rolovich said. Among the new rules: > Early-signing period: If the measure receives final approval from Collegiate Commissioners Associations, high school seniors may sign letters of intent during a three-day period in December. It’s Wednesday, and that means it’s time to run. The Warriors did it the speed way this morning at Ching Athletic Complex, running a variety of sprints at different distances and forms. Here’s a sample: Oh, and of course, there was some explosion-drill training:

“Slow feet, don’t eat”

One of the catchiest phrases this conditioning cycle is: Slow feet, don’t eat. Today’s emphasis was on speed and techniques to go fast. In addition to conditioning drills, each player ran 10 110-yard sprints — each run in under 18 seconds.

Jump-starting second week of workouts

Forgotten but not gone

Admit it, you forgot about defensive Max Hendrie. It’s understandable because he wasn’t allowed to practice early in the fall while his transcripts were being sorted. And then when he was good to go, he suffered an arm injury. But Hendrie is eligible and despite being held out of spring training until he fully healed, he is working out with teammates during this second phase of offseason conditioning.
