Hawaii football: Let’s play 2 with New Mexico State

By Stephen Tsai on October 25, 2019

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. >> The Cloud was a great idea. (I’m not sure how it works, but I haven’t lost a selfie yet.) The Impossible Burger also is a winning idea. (Tastes like beef, but no cows are harmed in the production? Sign me up.) But the decision for UH and New Mexico State to meet in a home-and-home in the same 2021 season? Um, well, it’s not the Cloud or Impossible Burger. I know it’s tough to find opponents in […]

We wish Melquise the […]

Hawaii baseball: Armed and ready

By Stephen Tsai on October 19, 2019

There are a lot of things to take away from last night’s 15-inning exhibition between the Hawaii and Air Force baseball teams. The Rainbow Warriors won, 12-7, in a pitchers’ showcase skewed by nine runs in the 13th inning — five by UH, five by AFA. Some thoughts: > The ‘Bows have a lot of pitching depth. “We’ve been throwing strikes all fall,” head coach Mike Trapasso said. Of the scrimmage, “13 of our 15 guys threw well,” Trapasso said, […]

Ali, who was born and reared in Toronto, played two seasons at a junior college and started 24 games for Washington State during the 2018-19 season. He transferred to UH this summer. Ali said he was notified of his condition just before the start of the Rainbow Warriors’ third practice of training camp. Ali said he is withdrawing from UH […]

Hawaii football: Exploring all options

By Stephen Tsai on October 16, 2019

It was a deja vu moment when Va‘a Niumatalolo took snaps at quarterback today at UH’s grass practice field. Niumatalolo, a graduate assistant, is the son of Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo, a former UH assistant coach and quarterback. The younger Niumatalolo has been helpful this week as the Warriors prepare for Air Force’s ground-oriented, triple-option offense. The elder Niumatalolo played and coached in UH’s version of the triple-option under offensive coordinator Paul Johnson. * * * * * The […]
