Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

Congrats to Hanna Hellvig, another Freshman of Week honor. From the Big West: Hanna Hellvig claimed her second Women’s Volleyball Freshman of the Week award, leading No. 11 Hawai’i to a pair of wins over the weekend for a 2-0 start to conference play. Hellvig had a career-high tying 17 kills against Long Beach State. She added three blocks, two digs and and ace in the four-set victory.
