Graduation ceremonies on the University of Hawaii campus necessitated an early start to senior weekend for the Rainbow Wahine softball team. With the the Manoa campus’ spring commencement ceremonies set for Saturday, UH’s season-ending series with Long Beach State was moved up a day from the usual Friday-Saturday window. Heen powers Rainbow Wahine past UCSB

Rainbow Wahine freshman Callee Heen launched two-run homers in consecutive plate appearances to power the UH softball team to a 5-1 win over UC Santa Barbara on Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball stadium. Heen broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run shot just inside the right-field foul pole. The Rainbow Wahine softball team split a doubleheader with UC Davis on Saturday to emerge from the opening weekend of Big West play with a series win. After UC Davis rallied to a 7-6 win in the opening game, UH right-hander Brittany Hitchcock tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts and freshman shortstop Angelique Ramos hit a tiebreaking home run in the fourth inning to propel UH to a 6-2 win in the deciding game of the series. Coolen contract extension in the works

Talks are under way to extend the contract of University of Hawaii softball coach Bob Coolen, athletic director David Matlin said Thursday. With a break in the Rainbow Wahine schedule, Matlin said he met this week with Coolen — whose current deal expires this summer — to discuss a multi-year contract. “I think the intentions on both sides are there so we just have to get some details ironed out and go from there,” Matlin said. Lopez leads surging UH into Big West season

Coming out of a relatively chilly February, Nicole Lopez caught fire in March. The Rainbow Wahine sophomore scuffled through the first three weeks of the season and was hitting .244 through 12 games. As sometimes happens in recruiting, Hawaii softball coach Bob Coolen was on his way to watch one of his recruits when he got a tip on another prospect. Coolen had planned to watch eventual UH signee Sarah Muzik, now UH’s starting second baseman, and another coach advised him to take a look at Callee Heen, a catcher/shortstop/outfielder a year behind Muzik. An All-State shortstop at Campbell, the Hawaii freshman started in right field in her collegiate debut at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. UH voted fifth in Big West softball poll

Big West softball coaches voted Hawaii fifth in the conference’s preseason poll released on Wednesday. The Rainbow Wahine open the season Feb. 9 with a Paradise Classic doubleheader against Sacramento State and Boise State. UH will also face Oregon State and UAB in the three-day tournament. A young Rainbow Wahine team went 24-30 overall last season and finished seventh in the Big West at 8-13.
