By Brian McInnis on February 4, 2019

The 2019 season is nearly upon the Hawaii softball team. UH will likely be tested, and then some, in the opening couple days of the season. The Rainbow Wahine begin against Georgia State at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Hawaii Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The next day, they’ll take on Texas-Arlington at 4:30 p.m., followed by UCLA (ranked No. 1 in one of the two primary polls, and No.2 in the other) at 7 p.m., or a […]

Big West softball coaches voted the Rainbow Wahine fourth in the conference’s preseason poll released Thursday. The Rainbow Wahine received 33 points in the poll of the league’s eight coaches. UH went 23-27 overall last year and tied for seventh in the Big West at 7-14. The Wahine are in a tight pack in the middle of the 2019 poll with four points separating third and sixth place. Three-time defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton is favored to make […]

UH softball coming into focus

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 26, 2019

Experience matters, even on team picture day. The Rainbow Wahine softball team broke out the gameday uniforms last week Friday for the annual photo session prior to practice. Guided by the sports media relations staff, the Wahine made quick work of the process, leaving enough time for a few candids on their phones before getting changed for practice. The veteran nature of the roster has created similarly efficient practices as the Wahine work toward their Feb. 7 opener. “I think […]

UH’s series with UCLA includes regional matchups in […]

Wahine coaching tree grows

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 17, 2018

Former Rainbow Wahine softball standout Alex (Aguirre) Gomez’s new job will bring her back to Hawaii … as a visiting coach. Gomez, who played for UH from 2009-12, was named head coach at Academy of Art on Monday. Academy of Art is scheduled to visit Hawaii for PacWest Conference series against Chaminade, Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo in the spring. As a sophomore, Gomez hit .311 with 13 home runs for the Rainbow Wahine, the last two coming at the Women’s […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 15, 2018

Rainbow Wahine third baseman Nicole Lopez closed her junior season with a second straight selection to the Big West softball all-conference first team. The Big West announced its postseason honors on Tuesday and the Rainbow Wahine (23-27, 7-14 BWC) were represented by Lopez on the first team and sophomore catcher Callee Heen on the second team. Lopez and Heen were among three UH players to start all 50 games this season. Lopez hit .306 overall with eight home runs and […]

Wahine look to finish strong

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 27, 2018

Sometimes it comes down to simply playing ball. Many of the external incentives have eluded the Hawaii softball team with three Big West series left. But that doesn’t mean the Rainbow Wahine don’t have anything to play for over the remainder of the schedule. “We really have nothing to lose,” UH third baseman Nicole Lopez said. “Have fun on the field and play these last nine games strong. We’re not really playing for anything but, just these nine games can […]

Wahine host Big West leader Cal State Fullerton

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 19, 2018

Change has been fairly constant for the Hawaii softball team. Since the start of the season, UH coach Bob Coolen has continually tinkered with the lineup and went 13 games before repeating a batting order. In all, he’s written 24 different combinations over 38 games and 18 players have at least one start this season. Coolen wrote in an identical nine, changing only the pitcher spot, during a five-game stretch in Big West play. But he hinted more changes might […]
