Lots of action on campus this week

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 7, 2019

University of Hawaii fans could probably use a version of Disney’s “Park Hopper” pass to keep up with the action on the lower campus this week. The Rainbow Wahine softball team opened the on-campus action with an 11-2 win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday to open the Outrigger Resorts Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament. The Wahine (13-4) take on California of the Pac-12 in the last of three games scheduled at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on Thursday. The tournament runs through […]

VIDEO: Rainbow Wahine roll into hectic March softball schedule

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 5, 2019

Break time is over. Ten days removed from its last game, the Rainbow Wahine softball team resumes its stop-and-go-go-go nonconference schedule with the start of the Outrigger Resorts Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament on Wednesday. UH’s matchup with St. Bonaventure, scheduled for 6 p.m. as the second game of a doubleheader at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, opens a stretch of 12 games over the next 11 days for a team looking to extend the program’s best start since 2012. The Wahine […]

VIDEO: Lopez, Dino earn Big West softball honors

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 25, 2019

Rainbow Wahine third baseman Nicole Lopez was named the Big West softball field player of the week on Monday and pitcher Izzy Dino earned the freshman of the week award. Lopez hit .552 (12-for-23) in seven games last week and closed the weekend by hitting two two-run home runs in a 7-2 win over Canisius on Sunday. She finished the week with three doubles, four homers and three stolen bases and scored 10 runs. The senior has hit safely in […]

Rainbow Wahine softball takes hot start into third tournament

By Brian McInnis on February 21, 2019

The action comes fast and furious for the Hawaii softball team this week. Given the way the Rainbow Wahine have started 2019, that’s just fine for them. Heading into the third tournament of the season — this week’s Hawaii Invitational — Bob Coolen’s gang is hitting .315 as a team, with 16 home runs to opponents’ eight and a 3.78 team ERA that’s roughly half of what they’ve hung on their foes. UH’s 8-2 record is its best through 10 games […]

Dino, Gandia-Mak impress in Wahine debuts

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 12, 2019

This season marks nine years since Hawaii’s landmark run to the Women’s College World Series and the ripples of that remarkable spring continue to wash ashore for the Rainbow Wahine. Izzy Dino and Mikaela Gandia-Mak were still in elementary school when they followed UH’s march to Oklahoma City and thrilled in the win over top-seeded Alabama. “I remember watching them in 2010 in the world series,” said Gandia-Mak, who was 10 at the time. “It made a huge imprint.” Last […]

Wahine walk off Mavericks, fall to No. 1 Bruins

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 9, 2019

Hawaii closed its first game on Friday with a display of resilience. The Rainbow Wahine then got an up-close look at pure dominance in the finish of the day. The Wahine opened their Paradise Classic doubleheader with a six-run first inning against Texas-Arlington, only to see the Mavericks catch and pass them in the top of the seventh. But Nicole Lopez’s leadoff double sparked a Wahine response in the bottom of the inning and sophomore center fielder Brittnee Rossi gave […]

Softball socks Georgia State to open 2019

By Brian McInnis on February 8, 2019

It was the start Bob Coolen was looking for. Hawaii crushed Georgia State 8-0 in five mercy-shortened innings late Thursday night to launch the 2019 season, as sixth-year senior Brittany Hitchcock tossed a one-hitter and Callee Heen and Nicole Lopez paced the Rainbow Wahine at the plate. “That was something we haven’t done in a long time, is come out on the first night and really pound the ball,” said Coolen, who launched his 28th season. “Pitching was there — […]

Hitchcock primed for fifth opener

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 6, 2019

In his meticulous penmanship, Hawaii softball coach Bob Coolen has written Brittany Hitchcock’s name on the bottom line of his lineup card for each of the last four Rainbow Wahine season openers. With Hitchcock back for a sixth year with the program, Coolen will likely make it five straight opening-night starts for the right-hander on Thursday when UH takes on Georgia State at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Hitchcock’s first run at a senior season ended with surgery to treat a […]
