Busy weekend on deck for UH softball

Right from the start, the Rainbow Wahine softball team’s lineup will have a new look to open its fall exhibition schedule. UH announces 2017 softball schedule

Eight teams that played in the NCAA tournament last spring highlight the University of Hawaii softball team’s 2017 schedule. The Rainbow Wahine open their 56-game regular season schedule — which includes 39 home games — with a Feb. 9 doubleheader against Sacramento State and Boise State in the Hawaii Paradise Classic. UH will host five nonconference tournaments with NCAA tournament participants Oregon State, Oregon, Utah and Marist among those visiting Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Just about year ago, Nicole Lopez was one of the promising freshmen stepping onto Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium’s dirt infield for her first Division I practice. Transfers bolster Wahine softball roster

With the additions of six freshmen and five transfers, newcomers make up nearly half of the Rainbow Wahine softball team’s 24-player roster going into fall practice. The Wahine signed six freshmen last fall in catcher/shortstop Callee Heen, infielders Laura Jaquez, Chardonnay Pantastico and Angelique “Cheeks” Ramos, outfielder Bree Soma and right-handed pitcher Briana Wheeler. Wahine softball fall schedule set

The Rainbow Wahine softball team’s fall practice schedule will again be headlined in early November by the two-day Kama’aina Tournament, which includes the alumnae game this year. BYU-Hawaii and Chaminade will both play three games in the tournament set for Nov. 4 and 5 while UH is scheduled to play five games in two days. Hitchcock throws one-hitter for Puerto Rico

Rainbow Wahine junior Brittany Hitchcock held Ecuador to one hit in Puerto Rico’s 7-0 win in five innings on Sunday in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Hitchcock struck out seven and walked none in the complete-game victory. She retired the first 13 batters she faced before giving up a one-out single in the top of the fifth inning. The Rainbow Wahine softball program will be prominently represented in the World Baseball Softball Confederation 15th Women’s World Softball Championship in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. UH junior Brittany Hitchcock is pitching for Puerto Rico again this summer and Australia’s roster includes five former Rainbow Wahine standouts.
