Wahine achieve straight-days sweep

By Brian McInnis on September 23, 2018

One-hundred and eighty minutes of soccer in a 26-hour span is no joke. That was the requirement for Hawaii this weekend, and the Rainbow Wahine answered the challenge emphatically with a 4-0 win over Grand Canyon on Sunday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. By defeating North Dakota State and GCU on consecutive days, UH (5-3-1) won the three-team Rainbow Wahine Shootout heading into Big West play with a combined 6-0 score. The ‘Lopes (3-9) pressured the Wahine defensive third early […]

UH tops NDSU 2-0

By Brian McInnis on September 22, 2018

The Hawaii soccer team broke through late with scores by Raisa Strom-Okimoto and Lei Medeiros in topping North Dakota State 2-0 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Saturday. It was the fourth goal of the season for both players. Strom-Okimoto struck in the 78th minute on a header assist from Medeiros which freed the senior co-captain up in the box and she fired a rocket across her body behind the goalkeeper. Medeiros snuck behind the keeper in the final minute […]

One last nonconference stand

By Brian McInnis on September 22, 2018

Playing games on consecutive days to close out your nonconference schedule is not ideal, but that’s the hand the Hawaii soccer team was dealt. UH was forced to be creative with its schedule when a team pulled out from this weekend’s Rainbow Wahine Shootout. In the new arrangement for the three-team event, visitors North Dakota State and Grand Canyon played on Thursday, and UH will play them in that order on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (5 p.m.). (For you […]

Wahine outplayed by USF

By Brian McInnis on September 16, 2018

The shots piled up in a hurry. For a while, goalkeeper Lex Mata was right there every time to make the stop. The fourth-year junior put together one of her finest games in saving a career-high 12 shots at San Francisco on Sunday, but an overwhelming 26-4 shots advantage by the Dons took its toll in a 2-0 victory by the hosts. The West Coast Conference team (7-3) had the run of play throughout in remaining unbeaten at Negoesco Stadium, […]

Wahine, Wolf Pack draw 1-1

By Brian McInnis on September 13, 2018

A hard-fought game at Nevada’s Mackay Stadium resulted in a 1-1 double-overtime draw between Hawaii and the UNR Wolf Pack on Thursday night. Both teams had their chances to win it in overtime. For UH, Raisa Strom-Okimoto had a couple of breakaway shots go just wide. UH moved to 3-2-1 on the nonconference season, while Nevada of the Mountain West went to 3-2-2. UH remained unbeaten in overtime games through last season, at 5-0-2. Tempers began to flare once UH […]

Wahine look to extend road success

By Brian McInnis on September 12, 2018

Leialoha Medeiros, a Maui native, wasn’t too worried about Tropical Storm Olivia earlier this week. The Hawaii soccer team had plenty of its own concerns heading into its last nonconference road trip of the season. The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a home loss to Division II powerhouse UC San Diego (but a Division II team nonetheless). “Living in Hawaii my whole life, hurricanes … tsunamis, it’s always been a normal thing for us,” said Medeiros, whose family lives in […]

UC San Diego proves its Big West worth

By Brian McInnis on September 7, 2018

UC San Diego might as well have shouted “Put me in, Coach!” on Friday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Division II Tritons fully looked the part of a Division I member of the Big West Conference — their destiny in two years — in a 2-1 win over Hawaii, in which the visitors came out like gangbusters and turned back several choice UH shots in the second half. Coming into Friday, the only time UH lost to a non-Division I […]

Can Wahine make it 4 straight?

By Brian McInnis on September 6, 2018

Losses can teach you a lot. Since losing its season opener to nationally ranked Texas A&M in lopsided fashion, a young Hawaii soccer team has figured out how to pick up tips and tricks during wins, too. UH (3-1), which has started six freshmen at times this season, goes for its fourth straight win at 7 p.m. Friday vs. future Big West opponent UC San Diego at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Never mind the fact that the Tritons (2-0-1) are […]
