UH looks to seize own destiny

By Brian McInnis on October 18, 2018

The Hawaii soccer team’s long-awaited Big West breakthrough could soon go from farfetched fantasy to doable destiny. The Rainbow Wahine (7-5-1, 2-2 Big West), who are in a three-way tie for fourth at the midpoint of conference play, have a prime opportunity this weekend to set themselves up for a run at their first Big West tournament. If they can score a win or a couple of ties at Cal Poly (1-11-4, 1-3-1) on Friday or UC Santa Barbara (9-6, […]

Strom-Okimoto goes off in key UH win

By Brian McInnis on October 7, 2018

Five? Ten? Fifteen? It was tough to tally exactly how many times Raisa Strom-Okimoto laid out or was laid out on the pitch on Sunday — either from her own doing or from a physical UC Davis side. “It was quite a lot, yeah,” Strom-Okimoto said afterward, grass stains evident all over her white uniform. What was clear — the Aiea alumna would not be denied on this night. After it was scoreless at halftime, Strom-Okimoto scored twice for the first […]

Wahine bested by The Beach

By Brian McInnis on October 4, 2018

The Hawaii soccer team got off to a strong start but could not finish Thursday night, as Long Beach State came back from a goal down to win 3-2 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH (6-5-1, 1-2 Big West) remained winless in seven years of conference matchups with LBSU (6-4-2, 1-0-1). ”We gotta pay attention to the set pieces. Sometimes when the fatigue sets in, the attention to detail lacks,” UH coach Michele Nagamine said. “We knew exactly what we […]

Wahine eyeing opportunity

By Brian McInnis on October 4, 2018

UPDATE: UH could not make the most of its opportunity, as it fell 3-2 to Long Beach State on Thursday night. For the moment, forget the Big West tournament. At no point in Hawaii soccer’s seven years in the BWC have the Rainbow Wahine been above .500 in conference play. That can change today, if UH (6-4-1, 1-1 BWC) can get past a team they’ve yet to defeat as a conference member — Long Beach State — in a 7 p.m. televised […]

Wahine rebound at CSUN

By Brian McInnis on September 30, 2018

It looked like the worst kind of deja vu for the Hawaii soccer team. With two seconds left on the regulation clock Sunday, UH gave up a goal to Cal State Northridge’s Lindsay Kutscher, sending the Big West Conference game into overtime at a goal apiece. UH, you might recall, gave up a goal with one second left in double overtime to lose 1-0 at UC Irvine on Friday. It’s rare to see one of those buzzer-beater type of goals […]

Irvine stuns UH with last-second goal

By Brian McInnis on September 28, 2018

There’s painful losses, and then there’s what happened to the Hawaii soccer team on Friday night. Goalkeeper Lex Mata was seemingly everywhere in the box for the Rainbow Wahine for 99.9 percent of a match that went to the tail — make that final hair on the end of the tail — end of double overtime in Irvine on Friday night. The fourth-year junior had some incredible stops, including a couple punch-outs at the goal line and another stop of a rocket […]

Wahine try to buck Big West struggles

By Brian McInnis on September 28, 2018

UPDATE: Well, here’s what happened to UH against UC Irvine on Friday night … It’s no secret that Big West Conference play has been difficult for the Hawaii soccer team. UH (5-3-1), picked to finish last of nine teams by the league’s coaches in the preseason, put together a solid nonconference record. Now Michele Nagamine and her young team find out if they can shock some people when it matters most. The Wahine open at defending regular-season champ UC Irvine […]

Mata picks up another POW award

By Brian McInnis on September 24, 2018

Hawaii fourth-year junior goalkeeper Lex Mata was named the Big West defensive player of the week on Monday, the second time in 2018 she was conveyed the honor. Mata posted shutouts on consecutive days in her team’s 2-0 and 4-0 wins over North Dakota State and Grand Canyon to win the Rainbow Wahine Shootout over the weekend, totaling 10 saves. She was coming off a career-high 12 stops in a 2-0 loss at San Francisco the previous weekend. The @UHWahineSoccer […]
