The Hawaii athletics department held its “H Awards” banquet on Monday night, honoring its top athletic and academic achievers spanning the school’s 21 sports. Men’s volleyball senior hitter Stijn van Tilburg and women’s soccer senior striker Raisa Strom-Okimoto took home the signature awards of the night, the Jack Bonham Award, handed out annually to one male and one female athlete at UH. Van Tilburg recently moved into eighth all-time in UH career kills with over 1,300 and plays an integral […]

Soccer signs 7

By Brian McInnis on November 14, 2018

It was a productive signing day for Michele Nagamine and the Hawaii soccer team. The Rainbow Wahine added seven players, including one local prospect, for the 2019 season. All were officially announced on the national signing day Wednesday. It’s a defender-heavy class, at least going by their listed positions. UH just lost seniors Raisa Strom-Okimoto (F/M) and Sarah Lau (M) from a 9-7-1 (4-4 Big West) season that saw the fifth-place Wahine narrowly miss out on their first Big West […]

Strom-Okimoto is offensive player of the year

By Brian McInnis on October 31, 2018

Emotions were still a bit raw for the Hawaii soccer team a few days removed from its season-ending home loss to Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. As pick-me-ups go, Wednesday’s Big West Conference awards announcement did quite nicely. Senior striker Raisa Strom-Okimoto became Hawaii’s first Big West offensive player of the year, and she was joined by sophomore Lei Medeiros on the All-BWC first team. Goalkeeper Lex Mata was a Big West honorable mention and center back Elena Palacios made […]

UH falls on senior day

By Brian McInnis on October 28, 2018

A very tough weekend for University of Hawaii sports ended the same way. After the UH football and volleyball teams had disappointing shortcomings — the Rainbow Warriors lost 50-20 at Fresno State for their third straight loss and the Rainbow Wahine were swept at home by UC Santa Barbara to put a severe damper on their postseason hopes — the UH soccer team had a chance to get one back for Manoa. Alas, it could not. With a festive crowd on hand […]

Wahine top Riverside 2-0 in crucial contest

By Brian McInnis on October 25, 2018

One more win and the Hawaii soccer team is in. With UH and UC Riverside mired scoreless for most of the night, the Rainbow Wahine broke out late with goals by seniors Sarah Lau and Raisa Strom-Okimoto for a key 2-0 win on Thursday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH (9-6-1, 4-3 Big West) moved into fourth place in the conference standings with one game to play. It’s the most conference wins for Michele Nagamine’s team since it joined […]

By Brian McInnis on October 22, 2018

For carrying her team the closest it’s ever been to Big West tournament qualification at this point in the season, soccer senior Raisa Strom-Okimoto was honored by the Big West as the conference’s offensive player of the week on Monday. The Aiea alumna’s hat trick in a 4-0 win at Cal Poly on Friday was the 13th in program history, from the seventh person. UC Santa Barbara edges UH

By Brian McInnis on October 21, 2018

The Hawaii soccer team was on its way to going the distance with UC Santa Barbara before a late slip allowed the Gauchos to emerge with a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon. Madeline Gibson’s point-blank wide-angled shot set up by Cate Post along the goal line in the 83rd minute was the decider between two teams that entered the match with identical 3-2 Big West records. Now UCSB (11-6, 4-2) is in great position for a Big West tournament spot […]

Strom-Okimoto goes off in key victory

By Brian McInnis on October 19, 2018

Raisa Strom-Okimoto recorded the 13th hat trick in Hawaii soccer history to carry the Rainbow Wahine to a 4-0 win at Cal Poly on Friday night. It was a breakthrough on multiple fronts for UH (8-5-1, 3-2 Big West), which moved above .500 in conference play for the first time in its seven-year Big West history. “The team was just so ready to play. We had that week off (last week) and we were hungry,” UH coach Michele Nagamine said […]
