Hawaii soccer: Mata, Wahine explore new frontier in Dakotas

By Brian McInnis on September 4, 2019

For the first four games of the Hawaii soccer season, goalkeeper Lex Mata has ventured to the four corners of the pipes and all space between. Mata, the newly minted Big West defensive player of the week, and her Rainbow Wahine teammates will now range far and wide together. UH (1-2-1) heads to the Dakotas for a groundbreaking three-game road trip spanning this week and next in the Central Time Zone. North and South Dakota are two states the program […]

Rainbow Forecast: Football faces Oregon State, volleyball hosts another tourney, soccer heads to Dakotas

By Brian McInnis on September 2, 2019

Is it Monday already? Well, if it is — and we think it is, because it’s Labor Day — that means a fresh installment of the Rainbow Forecast. For the first time in the athletic calendar, all three fall sports teams are in action this week. UH football is coming off a bye week, UH women’s volleyball hosts the Heineken Rainbow Wahine Invitational (fresh off winning the Hawaiian Airlines Classic), and UH soccer hits the road for the first time this […]

Hawaii soccer: Wahine depart for road with mutual shutout

By Brian McInnis on August 31, 2019

In a possible farewell to game action on its campus field, Hawaii won plenty of possession and created copious opportunities. Somehow, that resulted in a scoreless draw with Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon. UH (1-2-1) now heads for the road — a three-game swing through the Dakotas — feeling better about its lineup versatility but still searching for finishing ability. The Rainbow Wahine outshot the Hornets (1-1-1) of the Big Sky 15-4, to no avail. “We had balls off the post, […]

Hawaii soccer: Sumida gets Rainbow Wahine on the board

By Brian McInnis on August 29, 2019

It had been a frustrating afternoon all the way around for Hawaii and Nevada for two full halves of scoreless play. Some opportunities and close saves at both ends teased a positive outcome, only to have it revoked repeatedly like Charlie Brown lining up for a kick. True freshman Kelci Sumida helped leave most of the frustration on the Wolf Pack’s side with her header goal on a cross from Daelenn Tokunaga in the 96th minute at the UH Lower […]

Hawaii soccer: San Francisco keeps UH winless in opening tourney

By Brian McInnis on August 26, 2019

A furious second half saw Hawaii fall behind by two goals, then come storming back against San Francisco. The disappointed Rainbow Wahine could not complete the comeback in a 3-2 defeat to the Dons in overtime on Monday afternoon at the UH grass practice field. All-West Coast Conference first-team senior forward Miciah Madison put home the game-winner from 25 yards straightaway in the 94th minute, touching off a celebration under the visitors tent. >> HAWAII VS. Welcome back to the follow-up edition to last week’s inaugural Rainbow Forecast. Here, we’ll lay out what’s to come in UH sports through the weekend. Robyn Ah Mow begins her third season as head coach with a […]

Hawaii soccer: Young ones get a chance in opening loss to USC

By Brian McInnis on August 22, 2019

Maybe it was the blazing sun or the dozen-plus players milling about the sideline at any given moment. In any case, Michele Nagamine was going to sub, and sub heavily in the 2019 Hawaii soccer opener at the Manoa Lower Campus field. Six players made their Rainbow Wahine soccer official debuts among 20 to see action on Thursday afternoon in a 3-0 loss to No. 5 USC. >> UH VS. Hawaii soccer: full 2019 season preview

By Brian McInnis on August 21, 2019

In 2018, the Hawaii soccer team challenged itself by kicking off the season against No. 11 Texas A&M. That resulted in a 4-0 defeat. Things get tougher on paper in this year’s opener, as the young Rainbow Wahine host No. 5 USC at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Manoa Lower Campus. UH is playing its first four games of the season on its grass practice field because of damage to its regular playing surface at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. It’s […]
