Soccer Wahine picked last again; RSO is preseason All-BWC

By Brian McInnis on August 9, 2018

In what’s seemingly become a rite of passage in the month of August, the Hawaii soccer team must deal with the knowledge that expectations of it around the Big West Conference are low. At the bottom, in fact. UH, the last-place (ninth) finisher in the conference two of the last three seasons, was tabbed to finish ninth yet again in the preseason coaches poll and all-conference team released Thursday. UC Irvine was picked to win. The Rainbow Wahine, 6-10-1 (1-6-1 […]

Soccer begins anew

By Brian McInnis on August 1, 2018

Another year, another crack at history. The Hawaii soccer team held its first fall practice of 2018 on Wednesday, and its usual fitness test, in preparation for what it hopes will be a breakout year with a heavily remade roster. Fitness testing went well, eighth-year coach Michele Nagamine said on the artificial turf of T.C. Ching Field. “This is one of the most well-prepared teams I’ve seen,” she said, noting power and agility drill results. “With 10 freshmen, it’s going […]

Michele Nagamine’s young team will be put to the test right from the jump in the upcoming 2018 season. UH opens its 19-game 2018 slate against powerhouse Texas A&M in the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Aug. 17, UH announced Wednesday. The Aggies finished last season No. 7 in RPI and were ranked No. 12. They advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Facing the Aggies would be a challenge under just about any […]

Wahine basketball, soccer teams fill positions

By Brian McInnis on April 19, 2018

Until last season, when he decided to relocate to the mainland, assistant coach Alex Delanian was a key cog in Laura Beeman’s Rainbow Wahine basketball operation. After that, it was difficult to tell how far back their professional relationship went. Preceding and following UH’s 2017-18 games against Delanian’s new team, Big West rival UC Santa Barbara, Beeman conceded little in that department. In the thick of battles for seeding position, their history — which began at USC and included UH’s […]

2017 soccer season in review

By Brian McInnis on October 30, 2017

Hawaii was widely viewed around the Big West as a rebuilding team going into the 2017 soccer season. Turned out, for good reasons. The Rainbow Wahine faded down the stretch once again and were not in contention for the Big West tournament going into the final week of the season. UH got drubbed 3-0 and 4-0 in road losses at Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside, bringing things to a merciful end at 6-10-1 and 1-6-1 in the BWC. The […]
