Granato double-doubles as Hawaii sweeps UC Riverside

Senior hitter McKenna Granato put down 12 kills and picked up her 100th career ace as Hawaii swept UC Riverside, 25-16, 25-17, 25-22 in a Big West volleyball match tonight in Riverside, Calif. Granato added 10 digs for her ninth double-double for the Rainbow Wahine (12-6, 8-1 Big West). Senior libero Tita Akiu had 19 digs, including her 300th UH career, for her 17th match in double digits. U.S. men top Serbia in World Championship opener

The second-ranked U.S. men’s national team, with three players with Hawaii ties in the starting lineup, rallied past Serbia 15-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-20, 15-10, in the opening pool-play match Wednesday of the FIVB World Championship in Bari, Italy. Some have speculated about the UH women’s volleyball matches being cancelled this week. Olivia is still a tropical storm but expect rain and winds. As far as we know, the matches vs. Oregon (Thursday and Friday) are still on. UH campus is still open. Rise of the Wahine tonight, MVB & SVB news

The “Rise of the Wahine” premiere event takes place today (Wednesday) at the Hawaii Theater. Doors and the red carpet for selected guests begins at 5:30 p.m. with the event starting at 6:30 p.m. Immediately following the film, filmmakers Dean Kaneshiro and Ryan Kalei Tsuji along with former UH Wahine volleyball coach Dave Shoji and the first Wahine volleyball team captain Beth McLaughlin will participate in a panel discussion. UC Riverside senior hitter Kaiulani Ahuna (Kamehameha-Hawaii) was named the AVCA national player of the week today (Tuesday) as the Highlanders went 2-1 last week at their own tournament. In 12 sets, she averaged 6.67 kps, 3.67 digs and 7.0 points per set when hitting .364. UCR hit .249 as a team. Just got word from UH that there definitely will be no matches Friday and Saturday between the Wahine and Kansas State. There is a possibility of Sunday but that decision will be made by end of business hours Friday (think that’s 4:30 pm or 5 p.m.). No time given for the match if it is played. There were mixed results for the Warriors’ fifth practice of training camp. Quarterbacks Jeremy Moussa, Chevan Cordeiro, Cole McDonald and Kolney Cassel took turns in situational and scrimmage-like sessions. Moussa, a freshman, directed the only scoring drive. Team got in Sunday. Closed practices today, Tuesday and Wednesday at Punahou. Open practice Thursday 9 a.m. at ʻIolani. Scrimmages 7 p.m. Friday at Kamehameha and Saturday 6 p.m. at Kalani. $10 at door Tuilera will be with volleyball instead of with Warrior football this week. I am on mainland so will check in sporadically Aloha for now
