Senior hitter Stijn van Tilburg continued his climb up the career kills charts and No. 2 Hawaii (13-0) tied the program’s best start when sweeping King 25-8, 25-15, 25-7 in tonight’s second match of the 25th Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center. Van Tilburg put down five kills to move into 11th place all-time with 1,170, eight shy of passing Pono Ma’a (1,177) for 10th. Congrats to Hawaii’s senior men’s volleyball player Stijn van Tilburg and junior women’s tennis player Petra Melounova. They will will be honored as the University of Hawaii’s recipients of the Big West Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. One male and one female student-athlete from each of the nine conference schools will be honored at a special banquet next Thursday at the Marriott Suites hotel in Garden Grove, Calif. University of Hawaii fans could probably use a version of Disney’s “Park Hopper” pass to keep up with the action on the lower campus this week. The Rainbow Wahine softball team opened the on-campus action with an 11-2 win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday to open the Outrigger Resorts Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament.
