Hawaii junior middle Sky Williams was named the Big West’s Defensive Player of the Week today. The MVP of the Heineken Invitational averaged 3.20 kills and 1.20 blocks over 10 sets to help the Rainbow Wahine defeated Army, Sacramento State and Denver as UH improved to 6-0 for the first time since 2004. The U.S. men’s national team, with Punahou graduate Micah Ma’a at setter, lost to Cuba in Saturday’s gold-medal match of the NORCECA Contintal Championship in Winnipeg, Canada. Ma’a, the team captain, had two kills and two blocks in the 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20 in the U.S.’s first loss of the event. Undefeated Hawaii was about as close to flawless as a volleyball team can get Friday in its 25-19, 25-17, 25-18 sweep of Sacramento State. One player, Sky Williams, was extremely close to perfect, at least according to the stats sheet. The junior middle scored on all nine of her swings for a 1.000 hitting percentage.
