There were so many milestones in Dave Shoji’s illustrious 42-season career that Hawaii didn’t do a big celebration for most. Except for perhaps the 1,000th victory, the climb up the coaching wins list almost was treated as a footnote, an “oh by the way” congratulatory announcement at the end a match that marked another century number. Some of it might have been what some considered the bachi of 1992 where there was a cake for what was supposed to be […]
In this week’s edition of the Forecast, conference races have heated up for the three primary Hawaii sports in action. UH football is licking its wounds from a 59-37 beating at No. 14 Boise State, and has to turn right around and play a very good Air Force team that spanked Fresno State on Saturday. The Rainbow Warriors are still in great shape in the Mountain West’s West Division, though, if they can pull off a win this weekend against […]

This was one of the University of Hawaii’s best volleyball teams ever, and that is saying a lot. On Dec. 8, 1995, the Wahine were undefeated, 31-0, headed into their NCAA regional final against Michigan State. Then UH’s lineup of All-Americans and Big West all-stars — Jenny Wilton, Therese Crawford, Joselyn Robins, Angelica Ljunquist, Nalani Yamashita, Cecilia Goods and future Olympian and UH head coach Robyn Ah Mow — went up two sets to none. The Wahine had national coach […]
Coming in at No. 8 on our Stan Sheriff Center Top 10 countdown was the upset by Michigan State of then undefeated Hawaii at home in the 1995 regional final. My memory might be a little shaky on some of the details but this is what I recall. The Wahine were so close to making it to Springfield, Mass., birthplace of volleyball and being part of the centennial celebration. The Warriors volleyball team had been there in May as part […]
Our breaking news story Freshman hitter Hanna Hellvig put down 14 kills and senior hitter McKenna Ross added 12 as No. 19 Hawaii rebounded from being swept on Friday at Cal Poly with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 sweep of UC Santa Barbara in a Big West volleyball match today in Goleta, Calif. Senior setter-hitter Norene Iosia added her 10th double-double of the season with 16 assists and 14 digs for the Rainbow Wahine (14-3, 4-2), winning at UCSB for the […]

Hawaii needed every weapon at its disposal to come back to defeat last-place Cal State Fullerton in five sets on Saturday night. One of those required weapons was senior setter Norene Iosia, who broke out her old role as an all-around threat — hitting to go with her veteran setting, tough serving and passing — in a time of desperation for the reeling Rainbow Wahine. Starting in the third set, coach Robyn Ah Mow made a couple of moves: she went […]
